Zoggin' Fantasy models (zoggin-eck's armies and sigle models)

Hey guys, it occured to me that I post/whinge on this forum just about every day, but am too lazy to photograph and show any of my own stuff. What a git, you say?

    Not anymore! (I hope)

Any questions, comment and suggestions are most welcome. Bear in mind I consider all my models to be "tabletop standard" but I do (and will) make an effort to learn new techniques and tricks.

Weirdly, the amount of dust is surprising on some of my models, even recent ones. Apparently I need to clean more often (OK, I totally need to clean more often).

Re: Zoggin' Fantasy models (zoggin-eck's armies and sigle models)

Here's some of my lead 3rd edition era Orcs. For some reason I have a thing about orc archers, and have more bow armed models than hand weapon/two hand weapons! These guys are meant to have shields, which sadly is an option missing these days, so I painted the "shield straps" and plug thingy for the shield brow, hoping they blend in. It now looks like some have giant wrist watches! These are great fun, characterful old models, and make a nice change of pace when painting modern, sharper (dare I say crisper?) figures.

Some of these actually do have their eyes painted. Sadly I find these older models have huge eyes which look funny when painted my usual red. I'm undecided when painting eyes at the best of times. I'm not a fan of "cartoon eyes" on models (despite being an animator!) particularly on humans. Perhaps I need to just get better at it (I do, however, plan on using pure white, yellow and black eyes on models, including my elves).

Here's my attempt at painting bronze. It's silver, followed by a couple of coats of Ogryn Flesh wash. Silver is used for a highlight and rivets, then some old Jade green for the verdigris. Another wash of Ogryn flesh smooths out the green and silver.

Detail of "Flintstones" style fur pattern. (I stole/borrowed this idea from the guy who originally painted them. I always repaint figures that are second hand, even if the painting was better than mine!)

The green skin is a technique I've used for years, and goes like this:

    1. Goblin green
    2. Green wash (current citadel ork wash is too light/fine, I now use solid green ink)
    3. Highlight goblin green
    4. Highlight yellow
    5. Sepia wash over the top

Here's some goblins with the same colour scheme.

This one gobbo shows how I prefer to do bases, with a mix of paint and powdered wood/plaster filler. It gets rid of the "feet sinking in sand" look, but is perhaps too lightly applied in this example. The new citadel textured paints are a step between the two, so I just might end up using them.

Here's some Blood Bowl models from the other week. The human is a bit rough with the highlights, and could probably do with a blue wash, but in person I like him enough. I did have fun with painting the dirty knees of these two, especially the orc (who's eyes I should probably paint).

Note that I painted the orc legs as if he's wearing pants. I get a bit sick of the pantsless, loincloth wearing orcs, and wanted to emphasise the fact that Blood Bowl players wear uniforms, and are not just normal fantasy battle models on round bases.

The orc was also an experiment in painting yellow, which I'll explain if anybody is interested.

A couple of Nurgle themed models now. These are fairly rough, painted perhaps seven years ago, but I still like them. Painted today, I'd probably go heavy on the washes for the nurglings, and at least black wash the dwarf armour, whereas these guys are little more than drybrushed colours over black.

The dwarfs I use as fill-in chaos warriors or plaguebearers, depending on the army.

I just noticed how the fake wood grain of my desk would look great for a deser table...

Nice painting, I love the old orc models. And you're being modest, I'd call that above tabletop quality. I like what you did on that goblin's base, could you show how you did that?

    Thanks mate.

The base is just a powdered filler like so:

(I use this one simply because it's easy to get locally, and I know it dries rock hard when used for filling, rather than soft like a plaster filler)

The paint I use is this one:

It's a good covering and particularly cheap paint. Dries very matte, almost grey to look at. I use it (and this textured effect) to undercoat all my terrain. Paints over the top might seem to absorb it a little bit, making them a little duller? Perhaps my imagination, and I usually then drybrusg a dark/medium colour over the top before drybrushing the highlight.

Mixed together with a little water until I get a paste like consistency (nothing too specific or exact).

This is how much I use for terrain, so a smaller pot/container for bases perhaps.

On top of that, it's just a drybrush of a medium colour (in this case Calthan Brown) and a lighter drybrush (in this case Iyanden Darksun) and a couple of spots of static flock. I'm using a bright green from a railway store, and GW's dead grass. This makes their bases "kind of" fit my different terrain, including grassland, jungle, desert, chaos etc. Basically anything but urban/spaceship, but that's where my 40k and fantasy figures differ.

    Hope that helps!

And some Dark Elves for good measure. I have an odd mix of Dark Elves, ranging from these 3rd edition guys, to earlier, all the way up to moderns All so out of scale with each other. I love the 80's hair female Elves, so I'll have to get some shots of the up soon. These were painted a year ago, before I went mad on washes, so any new models might be quite different.

Yay, my order from zombiesmith arrived the other day. I got a few different models, and hopefully I'll show them all here, but I mainly wanted the "Barbagia" models, who will be added to my plaguebearers.

Take a look here if you're interested:

    http://www.zombiesmith.com/products/barbagia

The models I's seen so far have a fun "3rd ed Warhammer" kind of vibe which I love to paint. "Chunky" models with big ugly faces and exaggerated proportions, but quite restrained when it comes to weapons and "bling".

And here's an Orc arrer boy from a couple of years ago. I wanted to have a go at painting the sort of old model people dismiss these days, and generally remember for their awful painting! (I still have many of mine, some of my first painted figures) and give him a more modern look. I own heaps of these archers. I might make a unit, or mix in with my other older (read: smaller) orcs.

This might convince me to paint some more, and do a better job on the yellow and checks!

OK, got my hands on some of the new textured and dry paints. Time to do some bases!

Here's Stirland Mud and Armageddon Dust side by side:

The Stirland Mud was drybrushed with Clathan Brown, then Iyanden Darksun and the Armageddon Dust was drybrushed with the new Tyrant Skull:

Here they (and a sneaky brown hooded gobbo I was painting at the same time!) are flocked with GW dead grass and an unnamed green grass:

Here's the same Stirland/Calthan/Iyanden technique with a black wash over the top.

Note that this guy had two coats of textured paint, while the gobbos had just one. I'm sure most wouldn't like the look of the single coat, as some of the base shows through, but I don't mind, especially for infantry. On 40k models, Fantasy characters and larger monsters and cavalry, I'll probably go for two coats.

Nice to see some classics! A good variety of minis and the paintjobs are solid Keep it up, I think this inspires us all to go back to dig up some old minis which deserve love

Thanks! I hope so, too. Old models need love too. So many people make fun on "the red period" regardless of whether they even played/were born back then, but they were still sweet miniatures.

Re: Zoggin' Fantasy models (zoggin-eck's armies and sigle models)

Yay, got my first Reaper Bones miniature today. Impulse buys are OK with me, especially if it's a $2 model I have a few Reaper models from years ago which need repainting, but this guy goes first.

I've also had some better luck with the new textured paints, to the point where I'm happy to use them for an army. Not the cheapest way to do it, but if I wanted a cheap hobby I'd take up smoking, alcohol or something. I bought some of the Vallejo textured paste/paint, by the way, but I might just use that on terrain.

Anyway, here's a razorgor for my beastmen/Storm of Magic I based today. Hopefully the next ones I make will be a little more ambitious, as this one is still pretty much a normal boar. The base is the new Stirland mud, drybrused with vermin brown, then drybrushed with p3's Rucksack Tan. Skipping the last colour would make a nice red mud effect which I'd love to do for a 40k imperial guard army (lots of muddy trousers and tank tracks). Rocks are blue polystyrene offcuts, also painted in the textured paint before repainting grey. As usual, hope you like!

Between the strong colour combinations and the highlighting/drybrushing, I'm getting a real old-skool vibe from this thread. Great stuff man, I look forward to seeing some more.

The Nurgle dwarfs are the stand-out models for me - great idea, well executed, with a disgustingly amazing paint job. I'm taking notes from this thread.
