Zoggin' Terrain (zoggin-eck makes Fantasy and 40k terrain)

Hey guys, thought I might post some photos of my terrain, with a few tips if anyone is interested. This is mostly self-made, but I still have the odd GW piece painted up as well.

Here we have a house built using the template from and old WHite Dwarf (150's, 140's or so? Was WHFB 3rd edition, anyway). The tiles are a bit ugly, but I like to think I learned a lot making it.

Here's some fences and tents I made around the same time:

    Hope you like!

Here's some rocks I painted up the other night. These were put together from scraps of foam, from other projects. When undercoated with textured paint, I hated it, and meant to throw it out months ago. I had some purple paint left on a brush from another project (see next post) and just gave it a go. I liked the idea of varying colours between the rocks. The purple is actually purple highlighted with the same grey used on the grey/black rocks. I like it so much that I plan on painting up a whole table's worth for crazy Storm of Magic style battles, chaos wastes/daemon world battles and maybe even underground battles.

Here's the paint I've been using. I've had issues in the past with other artist's colours not covering well, or drying to a different colour and needing coat after coat of paint, but not these. I'm in love with their purple, and am experimenting with their browns (hoping to do hills in it). I use their black and white, also. For Aussies, these are easy to find and are cheaper than citadel paints.

Re: Zoggin' Terrain (zoggin-eck makes Fantasy and 40k terrain)

Here I was playing around with the idea of making a "zone mortalis" board, but with floorplans with doors rather than walls. Rather like Space Hulk, or perhaps more like Advanced Space Crusade/Tyranid Attack. This small piece (MDF coaster) is a tester, and I imagine ones these size would link up to larger pieces (MDF placemats of the same thickness). I'm reluctant to make up a huge board with wall sections for a game I may rarely get around to playing (I don't really get to play "ordinary" 40k anyway, mostly Fantasy). Something like the Forgeworld set might just get me into gear and play, however

I imagine it's the inside of a Tyranid ship. Perhaps with the lights off, with glowy, creepy luminescence going on.

I like the look, and is easy and good fun to make up, but the effect is ruined once my industrial (or grassland!) based models are placed on it. I have a few spare units for Tyranids, Orks and Marines lying around. Considering the size of Zone Mortalis games, I could always make a project of painting models up with bases to suit.

I do like the idea of making up a set of simple industrial, underground complex or spaceship walls, without the flooring, making an easily packed up version of the forgeworld one, but I did want to try something different. Hmmm... If nothing else, I've found a new colour sceme for my Tyranids, anyway, and perhaps a few display boards.

Here's some wall sections I made recently for my Empire/Bretonnian town, pretty much out of scraps form other projects.

These are so easy to make and require no real skill/effort, so I refuse to believe people when the say they can't make terrain themselves Kidding, mostly, but it is good fun to make.

I was pretty happy with the damage and stains. It's fun to make, so I usually don't know when to stop!

And a pretty simple barn, based on a wooden moneybox from an art store.

Nice stuff you have here, looks like the start of a decent little settlement. I love terrain building, will keep an eye on your progress. What are the plans, going for a whole village any bigger pieces in the works?

Thanks for the kind words. I have a gateway to finish painting, a graveyard, objective counters and trees (will post them soon) along with pre-made stuff like a GW watchtower and tower of sorcery. I planned on making a castle, even made heaps of sketches, but lucked upon a second hand GW castle, so ended up buying that! We'll see if I ever make "my" castle.

Here's a simple blacksmith. Fairly dodgy roofing going on here, as it was my first piece between a few years break, but I rarely go back and "fix" models or terrain. I'd rather start the next project. That said, I might add some clump foliage to the base.

And here's a few pics of the hedge and fence. The hedge is a bit of a copy form the GW studio terrain used in (and around the time of) the Dogs of War book.

Some nice terrain here, it gives me the warm oldschool feeling, but better painted.

    Thanks for the kind words.

I kind of see my terrain as the pieces I would have liked to owned during 4th edition, but didn't have the ability to make (or just confidence) so they probably look a little old fashioned

And now, completed (ignore the odd bit of flock on the gate itself, it just hasn't been blown off yet!).

    The reverse:

I swear I made rivets (out of glue) for each corner of the hinges, bracing etc. but what happened? Oh well, next time I'll just use plastic rod or something else.

Re: Zoggin' Terrain (zoggin-eck makes Fantasy and 40k terrain)

OK, so I rounded up some tombstones from the skeleton and zombie sprues, plaus a little Heroquest goodness.

I plan on making a "Budget Garden of Morr" using only bits and pieces I already own

I've used the 20mm squares from the GW movement tray (originally bought to make 20x40 bases for 2mm (!) scale warmaster ancients, believe it or not!). This will also use a few fun pieces I've got lying around, like the Heroquest rat, candle, Chaos vehicle sprue, a shovel from Imperial guard heavy weapon sprue and a vase etc. I rounded up so much stuff that won't get used, so I'll use some of it to make objective/loot counters, including a battlefield spy/captive torture setup using the torture rack. Soon, hopefully.

I based each half on a small artist's canvas. Originally I wanted to make seperate high walls, with the graveyard inside removable when a unit enters, that's why it wasn't mounted on a single board, but halfway decided I like the low walled look. An added bonus is that I can split it in two halves, lose the archways and have them butt-up against a building if I want a graveyard look, but without a big terrain piece, and just count it as part of the building, like so:

Unpainted, it looks quite "urban" compared to the rest of my terrain, but I plan on painting anything not stone up as mud, and overgrown with greass and weeds. The whole enclosed, cobblestone look of the GW kit doesn't fit my mostly peasant village. I might even do up a "poor" graveyard as well, with my spare tombstones and basic wodden ones. Basically, completely overgrown, perhaps in a forest section and less ordered.

Re: Zoggin' Terrain (zoggin-eck makes Fantasy and 40k terrain)

    OK, let's get painting!

The ground is painted in "black lava" textured paint (in backgorund) and the rest undercoated black, then drybrushed with Jo Sonja's brown earth (a little bit less red than GW's Vermin Brown).

This was then drybrushed with P3's Rucksack Tan.

    Painted, just need the flock.

Fairly colourful, but then again most of my stuff is, and I wanted to go against the usual dark styles The brown/bone stone effect isn't quite as yellow in person, honest!

I think it looks good, but the square edges on a sort of "natural" terrain piece looks off to me. Come to think of it, I dont like square edges on any terrain. Hmmm.

Hmm, makes sense, and I get what you mean. I never used to, and would never base terrain or use round coasters. I do have (as seen) some buildings on square bases with rounded edges to try and counter this. Originally I was going to make multiple round bases for a graveyard. I chose square since it may well butt-up against a building or surrounded by a wall or fence section. That said, I don't really see it as natural terrain, more an ordered part of the villiage. When people use square bases/felt/card for trees and are terrain, it freaks me out! In fact, I putt off making some Empire/Bretonnian objective bases until I got some more round mdf coasters to base them on.

Re: Zoggin' Terrain (zoggin-eck makes Fantasy and 40k terrain)

OK, it's so nice to complete a project without getting distracted and putting it off for years at a time Hope some people like it, as I had fun making it. Not the greatest terrain ever, and as I made it I thought about bitz ordering a few tombs from GW and almost bought the Renedra grave set. However, part of the idea was to make something up using bits I already had. This basically cost me the two dollars or so for the bases.

I've tried to add a point of interest to each corner. Most of it come from Heroquest, which just goes to show, you should never give anything away/throw out! The candle holder in particular always looked crummy unpainted, and was very much a "I'll never use it" piece, so I'm glad I still kept onto them. The vase is from the Heroquest knock-off expansion, and I have heaps of spares that will be part of a loot/objective counter later.

Part of the reason for this project was to try out the new "dry" paint range. I used Necron Compound for the chipped rusted metal and both Etherium Blue and Tyrant Skull over darker basecoats for the headstones and paving.
