Thread: GW Space Marine Decals

    GW Space Marine Decals

    Hello,
I hope that's not old news, but in the newest WD are decal sheets for

    Aurora
    Mentor Legion
    Logan Grimnar's Company
    Salamander
    Death Spectres
    Angels of Vengeance
    Flesh Tearers
    Raven Guard
    Iron Hands

    148 x 210 mm and 5 Euros.

As far as I can tell these are not the Forgeworld sheets!

Sorry, I am at work so I can't post pictures.

Seperate chapter specific decal sheets sounds interesting. Too bad they didn't make a Grey Knights decal sheet with an assortment of skulls, swords, Inquisition logos and purifier flames in different sizes and colours though.

I was just saying "Man, it's going to be a pain to paint the company symbol over and over again" - GW read my mind.

    Thanks for the update!

Death Spectres? Anybody have an army of this chapter?

Thanks for news, us Howling Griffon fans have to wait a bit more...

I'll have to get my hands on that Raven Guard sheet. It would have to be pretty awesome to replace the Forgeworld sheet though...

How are these going to be sold, BTW?

Some much needed ones, like raven guard and iron hands I see - and some ones for more obscure Chapters which is more interesting imo and might encourage people to start them maybe.

Excellent! These are fantastic and great news. I'm glad GW has utilized the advances in small-run and on-demand decal printing. Kind of wish they were around for when I was doing my Deathwatch though!

Just after I ordered some Flesh Tearer shoulder pads, of course! But that's ok, I can save those for vets and such.

Wow, I was just thinking I needed to redesign and print my Angels of Vengeance sheets, as my current is relatively low dpi and time seems to be making the sheets flaky and fragile. Awesome news.

Oh those rotters. I've got two sets of the Forgeworld SW transfer sheets pretty much for the Harald Deathwolf ones. There's no Bran Redmaw ones yet I guess so it's not all a waste.

Laughs, they must have read the e-mail I sent. I did mention it's a bit silly to fill the decal sheet with all the 12 SW company markings, since you only paint one company

WD doesn't say, but supposedly via Mail Order. I don't think stores will have many of these, if any at all.

It also appears that these are not the old ones, but of a new design. "Thinner, stronger foil to easily apply on curved surfaces as shoulderpads."
We both read the rumour, day and night,
but you read black where I read white.

New design? If they do infact go better over curved surfaces I hope they roll all new decal sheets out on these, I have a nightmare putting some of my transfers on shoulder guards and the like! Then again, the transfers I'm using lately are from FW.

Regardless of improvements, I'd still recommend the above processes for applying transfers. My method is:

    - Gloss coat on the target spot
    - Carefully trim the transfer from the sheet and trim as close to the image as possible.
    - Using reverse action tweezers, put the transfer in water. Apply MicroSet (combination adhesive/solvent) to the target spot.
    - Using a brush, apply transfer, letting it slide along the solvent to the exact location you want.
    - Take a small sponge (disposable make up applicators are ideal), dampen it, and very gently push the transfer against the model surface. This is really handy for shoulder pads and other curved surfaces.
    - Wait a few minutes. If the film is still noticeable, apply some MicroSol (pure solvent)
    - Once you are happy with how it looks, brush on some flat varnish, then go on to finish the model as you normally would.

It sounds like a lot, but once you get the hang of it, it's quick, and gives great results. I've had people think some of my decals were painted on.

    Re: GW Space Marine Decals

I actually think the Forgeworld decals are a step better than GW's...

I do things similarly to WildWeasel, but at the end I apply another layer of gloss. This protects the decals as well as further hiding the decal edges. If decals are applied properly and the proper tools are used, they should end up looking painted on (or better).

    Re: GW Space Marine Decals

Yep, those decal application mediums do help a bit. They soften the decal so it forms on the surface better. Vallejo has a Decal Medium that's adhesive+solvent.

    Re: GW Space Marine Decals

Ah nice. Didn't know about the solvents. Not to get too off topic but any suggestions about where to get a matt varnish? Can't remember seeing one in the new paints, and the one I bought does not cover a gloss varnish at all.

Back on topic: Anyone have any info on whether these will be a limited run, or if we may even expect more transfer sheets in the future? I'd quite like to see an expanded chaos range TBH
