MMOs are generally not all that succesful, especially for the time and money that goes into them. It would have had to be really good to become succesful.

Offtopic but MWO isn't the 1st Battletech MMO (though the last one never made it out of Beta for reasons EA never fully explained). That universe and especially the route being taken for MWO actually fit very well for an MMO environment (a clear and already established path of progression for the game story/universe which is being planned to advance in real time with the players ultimately having little to no effect on the story at large, but being able to feel like they are part of something bigger).
I'm sorry, but you're mistaken. It doesn't take millions of players like WoW to make money. Most small MMO with 3 or 4 servers, and their small base of regular players, make a good deal of money. There's hundreds of those now, and more keep coming every day (especially in Asia), and there's a good reason why.

“For a long time humour was thought to be the most potent antidepressant; recently, though, it was found that the bitter suffering of one's enemies, with the placing of sensible limitations on the success of one's friends, was still more effective.”
