Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium MMO to turn into a single player game

    http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/29/wa...layer-game-10/

Troubled publisher THQ announced today that Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online will drop the "online" portion of its name and become a solo experience -- with multiplayer aspects. Actual product details will be made later.

"As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO. However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features," THQ CEO Brian Farrell wrote in a statement.

As a result of this change, THQ raises the body count of its collapse, with 79 full-time employees let go at Vigil Games in Austin and another 39 employees at Relic Entertainment.

Heh, I knew that game was doomed when it was in production for 3 years and had 5 screen shots and 0 information. What information did surface was entirely denied by Brian. It's also humorous that he denied that the MMO was effected by his incompetence, but now is forced to eat his words and admit it. Hopefully a decent company buys relic from THQ before they go down with the ship.

BTW, Redemption, you misspelled knights in your signature.

This is going to suck so bad now. MMO's have very distinct grinding and boring-ness that only the online and social aspect can cure.

I don't hold out hope for either. If it was an MMO, then they put a lot of time and money into the network code. If not, then they still need to build that and the entire MMO backend, which means they are essentially starting over.

Their best bet is going to be releasing a fully functional toolset with the backend encapsulated in a dedicated server (basically like Neverwinter Nights) to allow the level of customization that war gamers expect. This would also take emphasis off of Vigil for making a fully featured solo campaign in lieu of players making single and multiplayer modules (again like Neverwinter Nights), which in turn actually saves them time and money that will be critical in finishing the product.

As it sits, the best case scenario you're looking at is a $29.99 cut down, steam special and a cancelled MMO. Sad, perhaps, but about on par with THQ these days.

Who needs an MMO? Just turn it into a massive online FPS and rake in money

Sad, I was hopeing that the game would have a little more then the standard MMO. Guess I'll be starting Old Republic online instead...

Bummed to hear about this, but in the long run it's better to be disappointed and still have the $60 in my wallet than be bored and totally uncompelled to play another lame MMO.
