    Its happening...

A warhammer 40k player is joining the fray that is warmahordes...well hordes at any rate.
I was wondering what factions would really support a Tyranid player. I know that many of you prolly can't correlate an army from 40k to a faction in Hordes, but I've been reading alot of posts in this section and you guys at least seem level headed, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Just for the record I adore Legions warbeasts but don't care for their warlocks cept Thagosh. Skorne looks premium as well.

Question: why enter a new world, and play an entirely new game, with an entirely different style, just to play another version of tyranids? there are no "well, these are the warmachine version of space marines", or "these are the hordes version of the imperial guard".

regardless of whatever faction you played in GW games, the advice i'll give is the same. this game is completely different to 40k. Nothing you've learned in your 40k gaming will stand to you. re-learn from scratch. its a different style, different game, different state of mind, and the sheer aggression will shock even a tyranid player.

you like skorne and legion? well, pick up the battlebox (either, or both) , find a pressganger or an LGS that plays warmahordes. get some games in. learn. then expand. and have fun!

oh, and welcome to the iron kingdoms!

    Re: Its happening...

To answer your question bout the picking up a similar race...well I've always fancied a saurian style to beasts in any thing I play, guess it stems from my love of dinosaurs from a young age, and in the past this aesthetic usually factors into the race whos style I can dig. I can respect its a different style of game, so then My question is this now, how is the playstyle of Legion and Skorne. I know the forums and the books go over this in minor detail, but you guys really know the ins and outs, I just wanna pick an army I know I'll have fun playing.

    Re: Its happening...

I'd suggest waiting just a bit for picking up the battleboxes on Skorne and Legion - wait for the plastic ones (which should be a month or two down the road, if I'm counting right). Mainly because assembling metal Cyclops Savages requires a heavy application of glue and profanity and the metal Titan requires a fair bit of greenstuff. The metal Carnivean...pins, at least for the waist join.

You can go to http://privateerpress.com/hordes/the-game and get a free copy of the starter rules and the model rules for the 4 Hordes warpacks. Go ahead and give that a shot - blank bases or paper/card cutouts work wonders.

Alternatively, look for a Press Ganger that has 2 Hordes boxes in your area and play a game. A good gaming club/store will have a demo night for various games on their calendar, so look for the Hordes night and stop in.

Since I play neither faction this is just my opinion from playing against Legion and Skorne.

Legion are mostly about the alpha strike, using the terrain to thier advantage since they can ignore alot of it. Alot of thier models have pathfinder and eyeless sight.

Skorne are on the heavy side, they have alot of synergy which they use to brutalize thier opponent.

Honestly, if you do go with Legion, there's nothing wrong with being devoted to one warlock. Thagrosh is a tough and flexible caster.

if you like dinosaus, and possibly lizards, have you taken a look at the Blindwater congregation? They're a whole faction of Voodoo alligator men.

They're pretty limited in how many models they have compared to the big four factions of either game, but since your a 'Nid player, I think you'll be fine with a challenging force.

I think Skorne are the best fit for any dino lover. Sure there are cyclopes and elephant/man/things, but you do get the rhinodon, archidon, and reptilian basilisks. Rumor has it their colossal will be a giant tusked reptile of some kind as well.

nope, they're getting the mammoth from Monsternomicon 2. the hordes gigants have all been named.

From what I understand this mammoth will be a different creature. This information comes from a post on the PP forums by their staff writer, Doug Seacat. For what it's worth, that 'mammoth' was not a hairy elephant either, it was a mix between a triceratops and a rhino with a bunch of cannons on it's back.

Yep, skorne will be getting a mammoth, but not the same mammoth as has been seen in previous publications, rather a new creature with the same name.

For the lizard-tyranid aesthetic, I think Legion seems like the vastly most obvious choice. Their beasts rock and they can field lots of them, so it's golden.

Ive always thought that looks wise Legion was too close to Nids for me. But if thats the look you like then yeah go legion. (and they'll actually pretty good from what i hear so that will be a nice change from Nids in 5th ed)

    Re: Its happening...

Playwise, legion is nothing like 'nids. If you like to hit hard and enjoy the tears of hate & rage of your foes, take legion. If you prefer a bit more stand-up fight, take Skorne. If you don't really care, take whichever faction looks best for you all-round.

Legion is very beast-centric. There's good infantry/units in there (Raptors, Striders, hex hunters) but somehow, most lists come down to a bunch of heavy warbeasts, a few lights, a 'mandatory' shredder and solo's. This has mostly to do with
A- Our beasts being damn good
B- Our casters having little to offer for infantry
    C- Our beasts are awesome

Skorne does the 'combined arms' approach better. They also nicked the term 'skornergy' (surprise!), it basically boils down to having either-or buffs, you can't have everything at once so you'll have to pick the right tool for the job. Tricky to get the hang of, pleasing when it works out. And you always have something to blame when things don't work out

My impression of what people (on the PP boards) mean when they write "skornergy" is when a model has various abilities that might be good on their own, but which counteract each other and don't work together with either their own model or the rest of the army, basically the opposite of synergy. So a bit like what you said, but in a somewhat more negative fashion.

    Re: Its happening...

    Examples of Skornergy:

Death March gives +2 MAT and Vengence. Awesome on Nihilators (Berserk, reach, 10 men, good P+S) but his feat removes enemy models from play so no berserk attacks.
Ancestral Guardians collect souls from nearby friendly troops and give extra movement to nearby Immortals which are constructs and do not provide souls
Bronzeback stops Tiberion from frenzying but can't use its animus on him because he's immovable.

It's things that both synergise and don't. There are examples in other factions too but skornegy has been the excepted term for it since mk1.

    Re: Its happening...

Yeah, so where a normal model might be able to use all of its abilities in concert to good effect, an Ancestral Guardian has to choose between either being around living troops but not using its ability to speed up Immortals, or being around Immortals but then not being able to harvest souls from living models. So it effectively loses half the effectiveness of its special abilities compared to what it might look like on paper. Frustration ensues. Right?

    Re: Its happening...

Well the Immortals speed boost is granted just for being within 10" of an Ancestral Guardian, who can collect souls from friendly models destroyed within 10" of it. That is a 20" diameter bubble that the Ancestral Guardian can opperate both functions in. It just means opperating a unit of Immortals and a living unit inside that area. Also order of activation helps. The Immortals have to start their activation within the command of an AG to get the speed buff. So the AG can stay within range of a living unit to collect souls and then move within command range of a unit of Immortals durring its' activation.

We aren't commenting on tactics or list composition. Skornegy isn't about whether models are good or bad or should not be taken in the same lists, it's a short cut used to describe rules interactions and something you should be aware of when gaming. It's great if you use AGs and Immortals together but besides the point.

    Re: Its happening...

so Skornergy is basically synergy with a lot of "either or" clauses?
