Re: My hands, they too are golden (PH Word Bearers)

Seeing some other guys on here painting Word Bearers is giving me a fairly strong kick in the butt to get going on these again. If it means I paint some guys just pinned to blank bases for now, then so be it.

As I've been saying for a long-ass time now, I'll throw up a picture of some of the guys that have been keeping me distracted lately. Efforts to go back and complete my old Marine armies have increased in the last few days since a friend of mine has been pushing me to sell the entirety of my plastic/pewter SM bitz box... the accumulated bitz from several armies plus enough bodies to do approximately 2/3 of a battle company. This would be enough $$ to buy the remainder of my Forgeworld goodies, including a couple characters, more support vehicles and probably 20 sets of basic power armor (Mk II, III and IV). As much as I hate to think of a future with no bitz box, it's hard to say no to this offer

I'm glad you decided to re-open this log, world bearers are kind of a rarity in the pre-heresy logs, and it really helps that you've got such tremendous painting skills backing an already inresting topic, will be watching this one

It just occurred to me, Allies in 6th edition will make my life a lot easier. Vanilla marines with BA allies if I want to do Death Company style Gal Vorbak, and Mephiston could be the HQ to represent Lorgar.

And for a list with the Custodes, a Space Wolf army with Logan for the Primarch, Gal Vorbak Wolf Guard troops, Lone Wolves for Elites and allied Vanilla Marines for most of the rest. I think I got this figured out!

    Intriguing.

Re: My hands, they too are golden (PH Word Bearers)

So, as always I forget to take pics of those Raven Guard I'm spending all my hobby time on lately. I have painted/repaired/touched up a number of models, some old and some new for them. Shrike's claws which were chipped for years have been repainted, I have finished and varnished a number of special weapons for the force, with the intention of running a triple plasma Command Squad once in a while (MOAR DAKKA), the Assault Marines are now 9 strong, fully armed with 2x plasma pistols and a powerfist, and fully painted (with the 10th on the way). Scouts were finished up and varnished too. And an extra Terminator painted.

As you can tell, the army was a mess of about 2k worth of mostly painted models for the longest time. Finally they are a bit more respectable when I pull them out. Could still use some more work on some of the bolter-armed marines, and I do need to paint 2 more rocket launcher guys eventually, but close enough for now. Long term, I might do another set of Black Reach Terminators to buff the squad to 10-strong or have the option to split up. I might even do the second Sergeant with a power maul, just for why not value. And then there's still the Salamanders Sternguard and the converted Landspeeder Storm, can't quite decide who should get that (all my armies use Scouts). But, again, I can wait to do all that

After playing some games of 6th and watching a ton more involving my roommate and our gaming buddies, I think I need some flyer defense. I was gonna save the Contemptor until later in the project build, but I don't want to wait anymore. I'll start the build now, since I have a 60mm base for him anyway, and magnetize the body so I can make him Mortis pattern later. 2x Kheres pattern assault cannons and a cyclone launcher with Skyfire will just ruin someone's day. I simply must have one (or two) of these things. Remind me to add several sets of assault cannons and missile launchers to my next FW order... hope to do one soon.

I'll figure out the rest of the army list soon, still have so many options buzzing around my head for combinations of Blood Angels, Space Wolves and vanilla marines depending on who I want in the list. Add in the prospect of some traitor guard allies further down the road, and the list of models I'd want to paint grows even larger. Gotta focus on just getting some stuff done, and take some pics for all you patient folks

Landspeeder Storm, complete with gull-wing modification. OK so the doors don't flip up, but at least I don't have to paint an interior...

Some of the Raven Guard reinforcements. There's more Assault Marines, but they don't fit in the pic.

And the Salamander reinforcements. 5 Sternguard (Sarge, special weapons and combi-weapons troopers) have cloaks like this and the other basic guys will just be plastic dudes with fancy boltguns and gold helmets. They can earn their fancy guns once they slay a particularly epic Drake

With a bit of luck I'll have more in the way of WB's to show off next time. I'll be leaving Friday for a week on the BC coast, but I might get a few hours of building in before then. Just might put in the Forgeworld order before I go... incentive to build and paint now before I get buried in resin

Re: My hands, they too are golden (PH Word Bearers)

Sitting at work feeling like balls If I go home I might try to get some basic work done on building a Contemptor (bonus, a friend ordered one and got the wrong arms so I'll have a pair of free twin heavy bolter arms to convert up!). Really need to get cracking on these guys, I want to play some games with them soon as I can to try my ideas for a list

In other news: Vacation was nice, but a vacation 1000 miles away from your hobby table means you often can't do what you really want to do Maybe I should take a staycation in September, and just build/paint models for a week. I'll probably drive myself nuts with cabin fever but it might be worth it...

Re: My hands, they too are golden (PH Word Bearers)

I'm not sure what happened last night. When I went to bed, my phone had 25% of a battery charge and a pic of my Contemptor on it.

Had a weird dream about a plane crash that killed our pilot (and I totally stole some chocolate bars from the airport once we got picked up), and when I woke up I checked my phone and it was dead. Plugged it in, went back to sleep, and now the photos I took last night aren't on there anymore

Anyway, he's built (save for the left arm, not sure which one I'm building yet) and posed in a way that I'm happy with. Right arm is magnetized and has the power claw/plasma blaster mounted on there at the moment. I think my long term goal will be to have one punchy Contemptor (dual plasma blasters if I'm allowed) and one shooty Mortis Contemptor (dual assault cannons plus CML). DPA is right, as soon as you start working on one you immediately begin planning the next!

As far as making him look like a Word Bearer, I am thinking of applying one or two of those really long hanging parchment bitz from the Ravenwing plastic frame, and possibly adding the big open book on top of the sarcophagus where the CML would mount. I'm not sure if I'll sculpt him a small chapter badge on one of the shoulders, I probably could but I don't really want to

Alrighty, finally something to upload. My phone didn't explode this time or anything!

So the Contemptor has been mostly built and magnetized now, just need to figure out what I'm doing for the left arm. The powerfist arm that I've had for a few months is kinda f'ed up, it's dripping with mold release agent and has a weird texture all across the surface... not to mention a big fissure along one side. Pretty disappointing, as the rest of the kit was damn near flawless casting, with several pieces having no discernable mold lines or flash at all. I think there were like 2 bubbles on this thing, and one area that needed a bit of liquid greenstuff, other than that it was virtually just clip it off and go.

The big book on his arm is borrowed from my unbuilt Master of the Ravenwing. I don't think he'll be getting it back any time soon, though.

Well it's obvious what happened to your dream Jericho..... Inception But that contempt or looks awesome! Nice posing and the addition of the book is great! And if you don't want to sculpt the legon symbol, bell of lost souls has a sheet of symbols which when printed onto decal paper... Obviously makes decals but the Empire Flagellants spruce has a couple of open books which fit the WB symbol

I'll have to remember the Flagellants thing, I have some leftover bitz from Flaggies in one of my many bitz boxes and I haven't even tried to apply any of them to this project yet. Thanks

hey Lovely marines. I was hoping that I could get a step by step guide for the red you used on your thousand son.

The Thousand Sons paint scheme is about as simple as you can get, but an airbrush would help immensely in the application.

    Black primer
    Airbrush basecoat P3 Sanguine Base
    Airbrush hilight P3 Skorne Red
Multiple thin washes of Devlan Mud in the recesses

I think I will go back and do an edge hilight with a mix of Skorne Red and the new Citadel Squig Orange, as I really love the look of that color.

Made a trip to Michael's on the way home today. It's my roommate's birthday and the nerd dungeon had some need of an upgrade, so I bought some frames for his ME3 lithographs. Now I get Grunt and Garrus cheering me on as I paint. Everybody wins!

Speaking of paint, just have a heavy duty magnet to install in the waist of the Dread and I can spray some primer... I'm gonna go do that

Re: My hands, they too are golden (PH Word Bearers)

Man, life has been crazy again of late. Roommate's appendix burst earlier this week and work continues to be absolutely insane. Needless to say, not quite as much progress as I'd hoped.

On the bright side a massive Forgeworld order has been shipped, containing one set each of Mk II, III and IV plate, plus tons of weapons, vehicles (2 Rhinos, Predator Executioner, a Mortis Contemptor), etc. In the meantime, I'm building more basic Tactical Marines, as I'd like to airbrush my first tactical squad plus the first Contemptor at the same time.

The tactical squads will be half and half between two marks of armor, the first squad a mix of IV and V, and the second squad a mix of III and IV. They will be set up so that I can combat squad them in a logical fashion, should I decide to use the vanilla codex, and have a logical way to tell them apart on the battlefield.

As the starter set contents are leaking, I am thrilled about the look of the possessed/chosen and the cultists. They will make for excellent additions to the army if I do a version of the list closer to the onset of the Heresy. The plans for this army just keep getting bigger... good thing I'm a crazy person and can't say no to frivilous purchases.

Great stuff man. Quick question, how do you do the bronze on the custodes (chest/arms)? I've been trying to figure out a recipe with the new paints and could use some pointers.

    Brass is easy!

With old paints, you can just do Tin Bitz, drybrush Brazen Brass, then mix in a bit of Chainmail/Mithril to drybrush a hilight. Wash with either Mud or Sepia cut with a little bit of Leviathan Purple and water. Then wash again with super thin Scaly Green.

For more modern equivalents (God I have converting to new paint ranges), you could do Warplock Bronze, Balthasar Gold drybrush, then mix in some Ironbreaker/Runefang to hilight. Wash with Agrax Earthshade or Seraphim Sepia mixed with Druchii Violet. Then do another super thin wash of Kabalite Green for the verdigris.

Thanks guys, I'm still building WB's on the side (another 10ish are built, with tons more having arrived the other day in the mail, including my conversion materials from Spikey Bits) while I paint up some Raven Guard for tournaments this fall. The old army will be boosted to 2.5-3k range with these additions, and the WB's will hopefully inflate to the same scale before too long...

As a side note, I don't think I had a totally up to date photo of the WB tacticals in this thread yet. A tiny bit more detail work was done since I last showed a pic here.
