Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - April WIP

    MONTH 1 WORK IN PROGRESS

This thread is for all your work in progress shots, updates of where your upto and general bantering. Its all about encouraging each other and getting that figure painted so if you want to start a bit of friendly rivalry, or plead for the great minds of warseer for help, then feel free to do it in this thread. I'd personally love to see what everyones going to be painting this month so get those pictures posted even if it is just shots of your desk and unopened boxes.

The next thread will open on the 1st of May, and you'll have one week to post up whatever you got finished for this month. After that week, the thread will be open to comments so please, take some time to comment on everybody's work.

    And here we go...

    WHATS IT ALL ABOUT THEN?

Well, quite simply, you paint one figure a month for the next six months. Post a picture up at the end of each month and a group shot at the very end. Yes, its that simple. 6 models – without doubt the easiest tale of painters on the interwebs!

Jokers are there as a life line, a back up should things go horribly wrong so don't feel bad about playing one. If for what ever reason you need a break, just post in that months thread that your playing a joker and feel free to find a suitibly appropriate joker picture as is tradition. If for whatever reason you can't post, don't panic – I'll assume you want to play a joker and probably PM you to make sure everythings okay

Threads will open up on the first of each month, and you'll have seven days to post finished pictures after which please take the time to comment on as many peoples work as you can. The 'tale of's are all about helping each other and support. The more you comment, the more comments you'll get back!

A WORD ON PHOTOS – IMPORTANT!
    640x480 please! Or use thumbnails.
If you really really want to show off a bigger picture, then put a link to it – it means those using slower connections aren't waiting for big pictures to load.
You can use things like photobucket and tinypic to upload pictures. If you have any difficulties feel free to PM me and I'll guide you through it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I still join in?
A: YES! PM me or post in this thread and I'll add you to the list

Q : How much do I have to paint?
A : There is a minimum of one mini per month. If you paint more then that's great but for TOSP, its all about the quality over the quantity so put a bit of extra time into each piece and don't be afraid of asking for advice. Don't worry if you aren't the next Mike McVey - paint to the best of your ability, learn, and do the next one better!

Q : Can I include fluff in my months post?
A : Yes, go for it, but try not to make it too long - much like the pictures, its hard to scroll through lots of text on a slower internet connection. Feel free to link to it though if you have a plog on warseer.

Q : I have a question which isn't covered here/You did something wrong/Why aren't you as good at this as Gabriel?
A : Bah there's always one isn't there! Shoot me a PM If theres anything your struggling with, want to chat about, or if I've done something wrong then PM me because thats what I'm here for. I'm a rather chatty bloke and I'm more then happy to help people out where I can and when I can't, I can usually point you in the right direction.

    Q : Can I drop out?
A : No you can't, why should you?

Q : Didn't another guy run this last year?
A: Yep, the mighty DAGabriel, scourge of guildkind. Unfortunately he's a little swamped with work at the moment so I'm keeping his seat warm until things settle. I've also dubbed this season 2, as we might have a second tale this year (with DA hopefully back in the hot seat)

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - April WIP

And because I can't ask you 'orrible lot to do something without doing it myself, here's what I'll be painting over the course of the next 6 months.

They will all be mounted on lovely Fenris bases which I have lying around. I was planning to get some Ariadna Metros and such but as Fenris won't have there rather tasty Ark bases done in 28mm till well after salute I'll just have to wait on them. I might also throw in a few extra bits and bobs - Bushido keeps catching my eye for a start...

@Gomez: Nice to see you'll be showing us some lovely Malifaux minis again, with some cool proxying here and there. Can't wait to see that Kaeris crew of yours painted.
I plan on doing a few Malifaux minis along the road, some cult of December, probably.

For this season's tale, I will be painting Infinity Nomads. I can't decide precisely what my 6 month's work will be (I would probably change my mind along the way anyway), but for April, I have two bjectives:
    1- finishing this bad boy:

2-Getting this pretty hacker lady painted:

I chose a red and black scheme for my Nomads, and since black is one of the colors I have the most difficulties with, my aim with this tale is to improve my skills with this color. And although I already have a few Nomad minis painted, none of them are based yet. I thought about greyish rubble with a metal rod here and there, but if anyone has suggestions, I will be glad to hear them.

    Happy painting everyone!!!

I thought I might paint up this ogre team next .... no idea on team colours yet.
In fact there is not much to paint team colours on beyond the shoulder pad ... Any suggestions?:

and why I am about it I will paint this guy up as a star player for a human team:

and this guy for my Chaos team:

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - April WIP

@Harry: Maybe boots and gloves in flashy colours, certainly facepaint like some soccer fans. Nothing bad with some more individual painting within the team. Do not forget that bases will tie them together as well.

Here are some possibilities from me for this Tale:

Some Vaettir from Tor Gaming for Relics (the starter set will be entered in the current competition so is up first):

Some Bayourks from Warploque Miniatures for Arcworlde (some Halflings and Bayourks will be added):

Some Quar from Zombiesmith for the "Songs of our Ancestors" and "For Spats and Pedrails" books (more and a scratch build tractor on the way):

I do not promise to paint all of this for this Tale, but a lot will get done.

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - April WIP

A lovely range of models to be painted up so far

Here's my addition to the mix:

So what we have here is:
    From World of Twilight
5 Fubarnii Knights, including a Captain
    1 Fubarnii Knight of Relan
    1 PreePree (Fubarnii pet)

    From Warploque Miniatures
    Galan Quaterbane, Monster Hunter Extraordinaire

For Firefight (home brew set of Sci-Fi skirmish rules)
    3 Void Knights
5 Colonial Troopers (including sergeant, sniper, medic, weapon specialist with RPG and a Dog Handler with a couple of Wolf Hounds)
1 Colonial MSU (Mechanised Support Unit)

I have a couple of little conversion bits I'm waiting for. I'm hoping to get the lot painted but we will see...

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - April WIP

Some really interesting stuff so far. Definitely going to look at the Arcworlde stuff.

I don't have a global shot of what I'm planning on working on because not bought it all yet and so I'm doing bits and pieces rather than having a big plan. I'll be getting more supplies of Warmachine/Hordes after Salute and the UK Masters, and picking up few other bits at Salute.

These two plus the guy lying down in this shot need to be done in time for the INQ28 Invitational in June.

For some reason I don't have a better shot of him with the painting started. I'll probably also get a new cyberhound from the FW event model as well for my enforcer. That's an adept, Wayfarer/Priest and ex PDF sergeant for my one warband. I may end up doing some other Inq28 along the way, but these guys need to be finished by June. Adept and PDF sergeant first.

Also on the table for this month are Epic Grissel and 2 cabertossers for my Trolls. I tend to paint trolls as a block so I can work on tartan and skin at the same time across a few models.

This guy is being done up to use in a Pathfinder game. We're playing an adventure path and the group decided to create characters as the Leverage crew after one of us said he would create an Inquisitor who follows the god of drinking (which became Nate). This is our Elliott and as the only figure that isn't painted I'm working on him between sessions.

Think that's everything I've got planned out. I'll get some WIP shots probably tomorrow as I'm planning on painting today.

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - April WIP

Okay, here we go! First up are the Nomads for Infinity, namely two Moderators and a Prowler. These are the only ones built so far, but I have a massive pile of them to follow.

This group will be a Bakunin Jurisdictional force, with a strong religious presence - I'm looking forward to those Reverend Custodiers and Sin-Eater Observants! The colour scheme will be based on the studio scheme, and the bases are from MicroArt Studio.

Secondly are my Inquisitorial Henchmen for Inq28 (or Inquisitamunda, or whatever...). This group will be based around a hit-squad for the highly mysterious and ever-so-slightly radical Inquisitor Draegerman, and pictured this month are a gunslinger, a thief and a psychopath with a knife.

The first model is Knight Models Han Solo miniature, which I just love. The other two are from Dark Age miniatures, the first edition Reaver and a Bounty Hunter named "Cesspool." The bases are scratch built from various sources aside from Han's, which is a MicroArt ruined cityscape base. A bit more information for each character will come as I finish them.

Next up are two Inquisitorial Storm Troopers for Inq28 - when Draegerman's motley band of murderers just aren't enough.

These two are based off Infinity's gorgeous S.A.S. miniatures, and are virtually unconverted. Again, one base is MicroArt's ruined city and the other is scratch. They may not look much like the contemporary Storm Troopers, but I think they are fantastic models and I needed an excuse to paint them.

Lastly is a 28mm Boba Fett from Knight Models again - a potential enemy for the Inquisitor warband perhaps?

What is in a name? An Ork by any other name would still see us as meat.

Hi guys, great to see what will be coming up in this tale.

I haven't got any pictures at the moment sorry, although I'm starting with Seamus and his girls, and depending on how lazy I am maybe Perditas crew and McMournings crew plus some Haqq for infinity.

I won't be adding pictures at the moment, either, because I don't know yet what I want to do for months 2-6. I thought about taking pictures of the stuff I have lying around that I can choose from, but that made me sad.
For the first month I decided to go back to Malifaux and paint Hamelin and his crew. A first picture is up in my log, but it's not all that interesting as of yet.

It's the start of a new quarter for me so I'm busy busy, but hopefully this evening or tomorrow I'll post some shots of what I aim to paint for this tale.
The great thing about the dwarves is that, even though there's this comic element, when they fight - they really fight!

Here are my Haqqislam figs on their urban fight micro-arts bases; I don't know yet how many I can paint, and there are more coming in the mail... One thing for sure, I'll start with the grunts (first 2 pics, Ghulam and Naffatun):

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - April WIP

Started getting paint on the minis. Some more than others.

Trolls basecoated. Normally I do either the tartan or skin first. As I'm doing two different tartans with these I'll be doing the skin first.

Monk who is going to have a blue, bone and white scheme. He's got little tassles dotted around and need to figure a colour for them.

Adept with the skin well underway. These wires sticking out all over present an issue as I can't go too bright on the colours on them or they will be too distracting, but if I do them the same colour it'll look boring. He's most likely to get finished first because now I've started him I really can't see him taking that long to finish.

Unlike Saul Kraye, because every time I look at the model I find another bit that I hadn't seen in the detail before. His scheme has to sit between two of my warbands as he has a connection to both so he'll have a green and grey scheme to thematically work with elements of both.

Once I'm underway with these then I'll figure out what I'm going to work on outside of the Wayfarer/Priest.

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - April WIP

Excellent work so far guys, thanks for replying so quick - its nice to have that momentum going early on.

ROTOKULTAXE - Liking the TAG so far, the red white and cream is really stark on a piece that big and it works well. Are you going to follow that through on the rest of the Nomads or is there going to be a bit of variety between them all? I'm still deciding whether or not to do some infinity for this seasons tale or not - I have a Lizard on the way though..

HARRY - Go nice and bright I say, it is blood bowl after all. Maybe something like an egg yellow? As for the pirates, what range will you be using?

LITTLE JOE - I forgot all about those goblins. Bah another thing on my to buy list Glad to see theres more Quar on the way though. I think I asked, but are you following in Whitworts shoes and doing lots of variety, or are they going to be more uniformed?

HAIRY NORSEMAN - I see lots of space marine bits and some other bits I can't identify... very intregued indeed at these firefight figures your building.

KERAVIN - Nice selection of figures, especially the pathfinder chappie. The only thing I would say so far though is to slow down a bit - its only day three! The Vostroyan conversion is really nice though, nice sense of movement in a usually static figure.

THE JUDGE - How are you finding the Knight models? I've heard mixed things about them, but some of the range is absolutely great and I know I'm going to cave eventually. I take it your adding those lovely reverand custodiers to your nomads then?

PERPLEXITI - Thanks for checking in bud. Come on get those pictures up!

EMPERORNORTON - As I said, your Hamelin crew is looking nice so far. Have you thought about maybe painting some of the more outlandish piece from the Outcasts that he can take, and then maybe doing other pieces as secondary things as you did with your LOTR bits last season?

ARCANUM - Thanks for checking in again bud, it always seems to be the newer members who drop out of these things without a word. Did you get chance to do pictures yet?

WHITWORT - Don't worry about not being able to post pics bud, I know your pretty busy

TAME - Ahh some other infinity bits. I was worried this was going to turn into a total nomad-fest. Just a quick question, why the official bases though? Theres plenty of basing options out there for sci fi stuff. Liking the picture background though. Might have to steal that idea

I should have some time tonight to put some paint down but I'm not banking on it just yet as I have an essay to write. I do however have stacks of time off coming up thanks to all those lovely bank holidays.

Right, I'm off to do what I'm actually suppose to be doing today...

Did not get the opportunity last night (was distracted pricing up a new bike & writing reports for work) the next few days are going to be pretty tight as well. Going to be Thursday before I get chance to take pictures on anything other than my phone.

@The Judge - nice to see the scale on some of those models. Not seen the 28mm Star Wars before only the larger versions.

@Tame - the bases work really well for them. Really like the model on the far left of the bottom pic.

@Gomez - I'm on leave this week so getting more painting done than I would usually, particularly as I'm not having to travel around the country.

The Boglin with the fish is just awesome, I certainly want to go and try a splashing water base on that one. The Bayourks are huge and bulky, they are so full of detail I think they will end up quite colourfull.

Well I only have Quar from one army so far and they are in uniform, some different ones, so expect some variation. So clothes mostly yes, skin no. I like that they come in three skin colours and will most definitely apply that. I think I will dice it out, but do need some more reading on them to go with the theme. I will have to get some WWII colours from Coat d'arms, I do not want to paint them fantasy.
This is a slow long time project for me as finding an opponent is nigh impossible here. Get a batch, paint it and get a new batch. I want them because all the critters they come with are alien and they look great. I have also been itching to try some scratch building of a machine and this army will include a shot at that (still early WIP). Besides “a pain to assemble” got my attention as well, it is not that bad though.
