Ice and Fire (Fire cult ogres)

I am thinking about starting a new Fantasy army...
so far I have Empire, Dogs of War and Dark Elves.
I want to do something different- and played with the idea of skaven for a long while.
Sadly I dont really have the time to paint up millions of the little buggers...
So I thought about shooty ogres!

I really like the Ogre Ironblaster model with the rhino and the Stone Age feel of the army.
In addition, I was looking for a real change in my play style to spice up my motivation again.
So instead of a lot of infantry and cavalry as in my other armies
(or the traditional empire gun line, where I just sit back and wait for them to come...)
I am looking for a shooty ogre army!
Being able to deal death from afar but also being able to strike hard in close combat--
Sounds like a great way of change in my play style!

I thought I start out with a Batallion box, 2 Ironblasters, a Tyrant and a Firebelly (for magic),
and maybe some extra boxes of bulls and Ironguts.
The gnoblars that come in the boxes as extras I will use for an additional unit of gnoblars.

From another project I already have a unit of Leadbelchers which I just based and need to be painted in the new colours.
As a paint scheme I am thinking of something similar to the ogre army in the March White Dwarf.
I would love to give them a "Ice and Fire" theme- so bright colours and flames and flame tattoos,
and based on ice and snow bases (similar to the lichen and snow bases I made for my INFINITY armies).

Yay, the first load of my new shinies arrived today!
Some bases and borders for movement trays as well as some bits (mainly handguns and pistols for shooty maneater conversions).

I also got three metal sabertooth tigers from Reaper. Yes, they are smaller than the Sabertusks, but I like the models, and
for just 8$US for one, they are a steal!

I also got my tyrant now, thanks to 75hastings69.

So here are the first humble beginnings of the army...

Hope next week some more boxes, my army book and the batallion arrive.
And I also ordered some additional models from Reaper...

    Some progress-
I finished the movement trays as well as the sabertooth tigers.
The bases give a good impression of what I am aiming for with my ice and snow theme.
And the ice blue on the bases- I try to make it look like they are marching over a frozen river/lake.
In the sunshine. Thats why the ice and snow is all sparkling.
Maybe not the savest of activities if you (as an ogre) play with fire....

@Jonahmaul: The borders for the movement trays are from Ironhalo (NZ company). The bottom of the tray is just plain plasti-card.

I also got some of their bases- nice good quality stuff.

They are cool although may need to find a UK alternative because of shipping/import tax. I'm quite lucky as I've got a friend who cast me some up for my Nurgle themed Ogre's (can see them in my PLOG). I really like your snow too (I use the bicarbonate/PVA mix instead of flock/PVA for my marines), I especially like the patches that you've done mixed in with the other aspects of the base, looks really ace.

Great start so far, those sabretusk stand-ins work really well and those bases look fantastic. Are those handguns and pistols GW bitz, or from another company?

Re: Ice and Fire (Fire cult ogres)

Those handguns are GW dwarf and empire bits- as soon as my other boxes arrive I want to convert some shooty maneaters.
I looked at bits from other companies- but its always a pain to tell what the size comparison is.
So I played it save and ordered from an Australian bits site.

Still painting on my first batch of ogres (the leadbelchers) and waiting for more boxes to arrive....
but right now I am thinking of giving them pale skin and dirty blonde hair.
    And lots of flame tatoos.

Re: Ice and Fire (Fire cult ogres)

Some more progress during ANZAC day!

I painted up some more gnoblars-

Name:	264.jpg
Views:	847
Size:	215.7 KB
ID:	138854

And I experimented a bit with my frozen lake theme- these unlucky ogres were too heavy and have broken in!

Name:	broken in.jpg
Views:	877
Size:	219.5 KB
ID:	138855

Some thoughts concerning my blue base edges....I am not too sure if they are too bright blue...I am still thinking about it.
I googled some images of ice lakes-

So the bright blue is possible in glacier lakes...

I think I will wait until I have a whole unit complete to see how it looks on the movement tray to see how it looks. But in any case, at least base edges are not too hard to fix painting wise...

Re: Ice and Fire (Fire cult ogres)

Finished the Leadbelchers and the tyrant.
The detail on the leadbelchers is not overly fantastic, because they had already been painted several times for another project....

I went for pale skin with dark blue flame tattoos.
This is to symbolize that this tribe (the "Cult of Fire") worships the all-consuming nature of fire.

My tyrant, Lord Abraxas, ruler over dark hills and gloomy mountains.

I know, biologically it should still be hybernating with all this snow, but it was just too cute not to add!

The vulture and the hedgehog are from the Reaper familiars range- I have a few more to add to other
models in the army. I think they are great to add some character.

Re: Ice and Fire (Fire cult ogres)

I love the Ogre's that have fallen through the Ice, it's a great idea and looks so good.

Personally the blue on the side of the bases doesn't really do it for me. Although those pictures show blue it's the water of the lake not the ice so it gives the impression that they're walking on water. I have a marine army on snow bases and have the sides black as it sets off the white nicely. But this is just personal preference.

Do your bellowers sing a song of ice and fire.......

    I love the fallen ogres!

I must admit I also quite like the bright edge to the bases.

Like Jonahmaul, the title of this plog made me think of a certain song of ice and fire..
