Gateway to Hell - Chaos Death World!

Hello and welcome to my Log!

As you might have guessed, I'm planning on building some Chaos Terrain.

the idea is to have some half decent Scenery to go with my Iron Warriors CSM army.

Hopefully this log will help to keep me motivated and finish it!

    I have started with a 2ft x 2ft board.....

I'm thinking of making a Molten Lava lake running through the center of the board. So far I used filler to make a lave effect, might give it a light sanding first as it looks quite rough!

The bridge and the 'spiky' entrance pillers are not fix ( for storage) so I might be painting these pieces as I go to make things a bit easier.

The Rocks either side of the bridge will also have a part to play - I'm gonna try and make a fortified bridge in the shape of an eight pointed star - Those rocks will have some 'dug in' arrow shaped bunkers. Plus a further 4 sentry posts (2 either side of the lava river) also in the shape of arrow heads.

Thats it for now, hoping to start painting the bridge soon.

    Thanks for looking!

Nice start indeed. Before you sand the rough parts away, why not make a test piece. Use a small piece of left over board (or a piece of cardboard) and give it the filler treatment. Then paint that up to see what it will look like. This way you will know what you want to sand away. Sometimes the rough bits are good, because they add random and look more natural.
A usefull way to do these test pieces, is to turn them into terrain features to add.

Oh my that is an awesome start. You could even treat is as an objective if you play a game of Apocalypse or whatever, where the opposing faction has to destroy the gate while you are entering the board from it. Really nice, characterful start.

Only thing, you want to make it a lava river, right? That would make the sewer pipes a bit... weird? Or would they just sludge out toxic waste into the lava? That would actually be kinda cool.

Yeah I was a bit unsure about the pipes. At first I thought they would'nt look right because in reality they would melt away from the radiated heat. But then again its not real and I think I'll just say they are made from some daemonic metal! - but might try and make them a bit melted.

And yes they will be sending out some form off toxic waste into the lava - or maybe a pile of dead bodies?

Also been thinking of making a ruined bridge incase it does get blown up by the enemy, or by me - those Iron Warriors are devious buggers and would'nt hesitate to blow there own stuff to prevent an enemy advance! - could make a game more fun!

    Many thanks

It would definitely be hillarious if you started a game where the opposing faction has to destroy the gate and you end up destroying it yourself. That would be really messing with their minds. After the battle, which they will have obviously won, you could just conjure up a big smirk on your face and say "That was the plan all along" and just leave it at that. Will have them guessing for WEEKS!

Sludge mixing with lava would be cool. Oooooor, it could be a mercury river and have that mix up with sludge instead... How's that for weird?

    Mercury river ehh?

Sounds intresting. Think I might do some research on that!

    Hello!

I have added some gravel to my board and also started painting it.

    Just added the primary colours.....

Also made a start on the bridge...

    .

Don't know the best way to paint lava, so if anyone has any ideas please share!

    That's it for now!

Re: Gateway to Hell - Chaos Death World!

Just remembered I had this piece of a wall I made a few years ago.

It needs repainting and some more detail such as spikes and eight pointed stars to make it look more chaosy, but it sholud do I think.

Here is a Walled Gate to go with it. Again it needs to be repainted but I think it should fit in well with my board.....

When the bridge is finished I will be setting it into the board to make it sit flush with the ground.

    Thanks forlooking!

    Hello,

I have made another 2x2ft board. This one is fairly simple really (made it last night!)

This world has been subject to lots of conflicts over the years and as a result has suffered some serious bombardment, hence all the craters.

I'm hoping to apply the base coat tonight - which will be a 50/50 mix of dark brown and red. Highlighted with straight red. Then a final highlight of burbonic brown.

    Thanks for looking!

Okay I finished the ground is painted. Just need to pick out the details and panit the sides black.

Here are some quick pic's so far.....

Re: Gateway to Hell - Chaos Death World!

Hi and thanks for the comments so far!

I have made another board section.

Painted the ground, just need to add the details....

This part will show the ground cracking open and lava forming.

Painted the ground on the lava river board. Will start on the river soon. Think the bridge is looking a bit naff so might change it.

And finaly, I just took a pic of everything so far...

You can't quite see from the pic but there is a slight variation in colour between the three pieces. It should'nt be to obvious though.

I'm kind of happy with where this is going. It does'nt look much like a death world yet, let alone a chaos one! I'm hoping when the lava pools and river are finished it should help.
I will have to build some individual 'chaosy' pieces later to try and add some more character, a few eight pointed shrines and stuff maybe?

With all the craters there is'nt much flat ground for the fort. Think I will have to make a couple of boards that are just flat ground and nothing else.

That's all for now. Thanks for looking!

Re: Gateway to Hell - Chaos Death World!

I like the way this is looking. You could add another "gate" to the opposite side of the bridge or maybe even on the other side and in the middle. Or once the rest of the boards are complete and you've placed terrain it might not stand out so much. At the moment I think the bridge just looks odd because it's kind of in the middle of no where by itself.

Overall the board is good as a base. It'll be the things you add for each game that will really make it. Maybe (as your making it for your IW) some ruined bunkers would be a good idea.

Re: Gateway to Hell - Chaos Death World!

Oh yeah, Ruined bunkers would look pretty good.
Could have a couple of them dotted around - by the bridge, infront of the fort. Seems quite an obvious choice really for IW's! - Don't know why I didn't think of it?

Thanks for the advice chris! I'm gona start researching/designing some chaos style bunkers!

    Cheers!

Re: Gateway to Hell - Chaos Death World!

If you wanted to push the chaos death world theme you could do the bunkers as heavily deamon possessed, maybe even mutated into a deamon face with a gun coming out the mouth, that have been cracked open by IW shells as they hate mutation and chaos curruption. I don't know if you have the Chaos Deamons 40k codex, but there is a description of a world that becomes a deamon world for years and describes how the landscape changes, this could provide some useful ideas.

On painting lava it depends a little on what kind of effect you want. The important thing it to not make it too uniform. Lava varies a lot in colour right from black to very bright yellow depending on the temperature. So you probably want darker areas surrounded by strips/cracks of much brighter colours to represent hotter lava breaking through the cooler surface. It takes a little work but if you get it right it looks really cool. I've only done it for bases, not terrain though, so just a couple of pictures of real life lava flows.

Re: Gateway to Hell - Chaos Death World!

    Hi.

I went out to the shed to start painting again and to my surprise found out that my boards had started to go mouldy. They had been stacked up on the floor and I guess it was a bit damp.

With this I have decided to create some decent (ish) storage for them so it doesn't happen again.

I don't want to spend much so decided to make my own from a load of wood I had lying around (actually it was my old bed that was about to go to the skip!)

With that I have made the following.....

I'm not great at DIY but I'm quiet pleased with the result.

As you can see the boards fit quiet snugly. There is room for six in total, making a 6"x4" table.

It cost me about £7.00 for a box of screws and a tape measure so not to bad really.

Now I have some proper storage I have plans to carry on with the project so should start making some my boards soon.

    Cheers!

Re: Gateway to Hell - Chaos Death World!

Now I have somewhere safe to store them i thought I would begin remaking my board.

I started with drawing some designs on paper squares.

I found this easier than drawing one large design. This way I could move all the pieces around to see if they match up and how it would look.

Now I have started on a couple of boards.

I wanted to exploit the thick polystyrene boards so created quite a large cliff face. Should make for a more interesting board when finished.

This piece is ready for painting, but I won't do that until all the boards are finished so to ensure they all match in colour.

Hopefully post more in a few weeks when I have made some progress.

    Cheers!
