The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 7 (Mar painting and Apr WIP)

This is the thread where you post what you painted in March.

Please post nothing else for 1 week, and then after the first week of Mar please feel free to comment on the work of others.

    Mission Statement:

It is the goal of The Tale of Fantasy Painters, and all Tales for that matter, to help fellow gamers paint their armies by providing them a place to find support and encouragement.

    The Tale:

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months.

The way it works is that painting would begin in September and then in the first day or two of October a thread will be put up where you can post what you had done in September (this trend will continue for 12 months). You can include as much information as you wish, but some good things to include along with the picture are: the units, the total points for that month, conversions, highs and lows, plans for next month, and a number between 1 and 6. The number is important because it has to do with feedback.

A week after the initial thread is created you can then (and are encouraged to) add feedback on the work of others. Due to the large number of people who take part in these tales it is suggested that you only comment on those that have the same number as you. Of course if there are ones that really catch your eye, or you are a trooper and want to comment on them all, that is obviously awesome.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

    Men and Boys:

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two categories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q : When can I join in? Does it have to be at the start or can it be any time?
A : Join in any time.

    Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes, but if you can do this time after time then you can probably commit to more. Feel free to sign up multiple times to reflect the amount of work you plan to do (for example sign up for Beastmen X2 and submit 400 points a month, or Beastmen Men + Boy submit 300 points a month).

    Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example if you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : What do I do when I'm done and the tale isn't over?
A : First thing to do is to include an army shot (everyone loves an army shot) and then it's up to you. Either stay on and paint a model now and then to take part, or start planning for the next tale. If you are really cocky then you can sign up for ANOTHER army is see if you can blitz it in time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can I *insert something here that results in more painting*?
    A : A thousand times yes!!!

Q : Can Doi drop out?
    A : No he can't.

Q: Can other people drop out?
    A: It's up to Doi.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 7 (Mar painting and Apr WIP

    Army : High Elves
Bacground: A detachment of High Elves in Lustria.

    Category : Boyz

    Points so far : 559

    February's painting :
    1 Tiranoc Chariot – 85 Points
    1 Swordmaster of Hoeth – 15 Points
    1 Seaguard with Shields – 13 Points

    TOTAL : 113 Points

    TOTAL : 672/1000 pts

DICE ROLL : 1 (But I'll try to post comments for everyone)

HIGHS : Finishing the Chariot. It’s a nice model with a good sense of motion. The Island of Blood Swordmaster Models are also great. I love the models, so its rewarding to get them finished.

LOWS : Not getting the basing done yet. I think next month I might take a Joker and try to base everything, and perhaps prepare bases for the rest of the army.

NEXT TO DO : Probably a lot of basing. I’ll also ideally do some additional Swordmasters and Sea Guard, and if time permits I’d like to paint a few Shadow Warriors.

    Pictures!

    Seaguard:

Folks, my stuff is done but I'm going to need until the 7th to post it, that ok? Had an emergency come up.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 7 (Mar painting and Apr WIP

    Ok let's go

    Army : Orcs and Goblins

    Category : boyz

    Units : 4 squigs (32 pts), 2 herders (6 pts), 1 squig hopper (12 pts), 2 black orcs (24 pts) = 74 pts (673 pts/1200 pts)

    Dice roll : 4

Highs : painting all those squigs and herders was a real blast. I was so motivated that I finished them around the beginning of the month. I decided to paint two black orcs to push the points up. Tried check pattern on the shoulder plates instead of bronze-ish metal.

Lows : black orcs are not 100% finished. I'm still undecided on the red armour parts to finish them, but it will do for now.

    Onto the pictures

    The tale so far :

And a taste of things to come in the next months :

Zark's Averland Dogs of War expansion Month 7

    Roll: 3

    Units:
6 Mercenary Ogres with Heavy Armour and Full Command
    6 Mercenary Ogres with Champion
40 City Militia with 'Morning Stars' and Full Command

    Points: 278 + 230 + 176 = 684pts

    Total: 2678 + 684 = 3362pts

A bunch of units! Am pretty happy with how the Ogres turned out, especially the Blood Bowl ones.

Pretty much all standard minis, although almost half the Ogres are non GW, along with a few of the Militia. The militia contain my army's only unit filler (shock! Tokamek would disprove) in the shape of an Ogre mercenary from Mordheim.

    Borga's Budget Bashas:

Cracktooth's Crushas (an ex-Bloodbowl team who ate all their goblins ans decided that the mercenary life was easier, as at least then they wouldn't have to pretend to play sports while ripping people limb from limb):

The Blue Bullocks (the town guard of one of the outlying villages, aided by a lowly priest whipping the townsfolk into a frenzy)

I am already plowing on with my next unit, finally getting around to painting Long Drong's Slayers. Have decided to try get everything that I have already undercoated done before starting on repair work/assembly for my next units.

    Army: Empire (Middenheim)

    Unit: 1 Captain

Points: Let's call him 100 points with magic items

Still to do: The base. My Empire army has snow bases and it's just not worth it to mix the snow for just one mini.

The decision to switch over to the Empire came a bit late, so I'm low on points, but I hope to change that soon.
With the new Armybook just around the corner I plan to go back to blue mountain:

Considering the size of your army, and given that still don't seem to be stopping, do you think you'll get to 4000? If so, I can enter yours as 2 armies, giving ever greater glory!

    Of course!

I've just been back over the posts, Month 1 was a joker, Month 2 was 533 pts, Month 3 was 130 pts, Month 4 was 125 pts, Month 5 was also 125 pts, and Month 6 was another Joker, so the current Total so far should be 913 pts. This month I have done 160 pts, which would make next month's total 1073 pts - OK?

    Cheers Braad!

I plan to keep going till I run out of steam - 4k should be easily doable, maybe 5 or 6k, just depends when I run out of assembled stuff and need to start building/repairing minis (which will slow me down a fair amount). We'll see how it goes

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 7 (Mar painting and Apr WIP

Army: The High House of Chains, 2400pts of Druchii
    Monthly Target: 240pts
    This Months Total: 343pts
    Jokers Used: 0

Completed: The Fegharion - Hydra (175pts), Hiroth Arkitaine - Master BsB with heavy armour, Sea Dragon cloak, Sword of Might, Shield of Ghrond, Seed of Rebirth (168pts)The

Background: By rights the true master of the line of Arkitaine, Hiroth has found himself usurped by his younger brother Velrys. Biding his time and gathering his strength against the fell powers that aid Velrys, Hiroth commands the warriors of the Household Guard in combat, his mastery of discipline and the arts of war ensuring that never a backward step is taken by his spears. The unwilling Seneschal of High House Chains, Hiroth patiently waits for the moment he can free his brother from his torment.

In contrast, the elemental Karcist Archeth Telorast has pledged himself to the service of the House of Chains whole-heartedly. An ancient and powerful practitioner of the summoning and binding of elementals, Archeth uses his iron will to bind and control the raging power of the Fegharion, an elemental of Darkness. Formed from the puissant roiling seas of Dark Magic, the Fegharion is destruction personified and walks this mortal realm only to destroy.

Conversion work: The Fegharion is converted from the C'Tan Nightbringer with a few little Druchii armour pieces added and the scythe blade replaced with a Dark Eldar sword blade. This was a beautiful Finecast sculpt, I'm really loving this new medium. The Karscist is converted from a Haemonculus, with the spine trimmed out of his hump and rebuilt up, and a matching gauntlet from a Wrack. Hiroth is another Dark Eldar base, this time the Archon with a Wych head and left arm, a CoK shield and a sword arm taken from a spare Confrontation mini.

Highs: Hiroth is my favourite character in the army, both in terms of fluff and the mini itself. I'm also very pleased with the Fegharion, this was the first large model I'd painted for about 4-5 years and the first time in a while I'd tried that style of highlighting and shading.

Lows: None really, but it would have been nice to get a bit more painted.

    Next months WiP:
    Corsairs. 35 of them. Hopefully.

    Dice Roll: 4.

    And the pics.....

    Hiroth Arkitaine

    The Fegharion

    Cheers everyone,
    Jack

    A Joker.

In loving memory of my father, who died on the 20th of March.
Owl can spell his name ("Wol") and the word "Tuesday" (so that you know it isn't Wednesday). He can also read, although only if no-one is looking over his shoulder.

Army: The Stormbreaker Tribe [2000 Points Ogre Kingdoms]

Unit: 8 Rustguts with Gutlord and Bellower

Build/Conversion: Mostly out of the box. Garagg himself was made using an Ogre Bull body, the champion's right arm, while the helmet, the weapon and the left arm are from the Mournfang kit. The Bellower's weapon is also from the Mournfang box.

Still to do: Basically finished, but you might see the lack of actual rust. Given that it is more realistical that I use two units of 8 instead of one horde, I leave them as they are. Plus, the rust can be added later if necessary!

Highs: I painted them in 3 days, which was amazing! I think I never painted a whole unit that fast! Plus I like how the skin turned out.

Lows: Lack of rust! No, nothing I think. Lovely models, lovely painting, happy Morkash.

Points: 364 (8 Ironguts with Bellower and Gutlord)
Together with the 1813 from the last months that makes a total of 2177! Per se I'm finished with the tale, but I will increase to 3000 points, there is much left to be done!

    Dice roll: 6

Next month: I started on two Maneaters, and there is a half finished Thundertusk and the Firebelly...we'll see, I won't have that much time to paint this month!

    Actual Pictures:

    The unit:

    Gutlord "Rusty" Garagg:

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Just an ordinary Irongut. But man, I love these models so much. For me they are amongst Brian Nelson's best models.

@Braad: Could I increase my pledge for the tale towards 3000 points of Ogre Kingdoms? Adding me as Boy in addition, or something. Thanks in advance and many thanks for the charts each and every month!!

Edit: I guess I'll reupload new pictures these days. Learning point: Do not take pictures in full sunlight and edit them on the computer while seeing next to nothing...
Edit 2: Tried to get some less overlightened pictures. Hope it's better.
