What do you think of Dwarf King's Hold?

    Link: http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home...ings-Hold.html

Hi, me and my brother are getting interested in starting some board gaming as a way of using limited time for miniature gaming. This way we hope to play more often, and also paint up some Warhammer miniatures from our armies for board game action. Currently, it's not much idea playing Warhammer at home, thus reserving this for tournaments.

What do you think of Dwarf King's Hold? At the present, we're looking at Dead Rising and the expansion Ancient Grudge. Are they any good? Are there enough scenarios for multiplayer battles that you can play it several times in an evening? Are there fan-made profiles or rules for using monsters, or are there rules for this in the kit? Would you recommend something else instead of Dwarf King's Hold as a dungeon crawl board game?

I would reccomend it. I've only played Dead rising but I think the core mechanics are very good. Individual actions are simple so you don't get bogged down but it gets tactical once you start combinig different characters. The original kit did suffer from having too few scenarios but this isn't a problem now they have made so many expansions. I would say that Ancient grudge is the best expansion to start with. It contains rules for monsters, more scenarios (including 3/4 player games) and rules for letting you use alternative warbands. This last feature is great for making the game more replayable since a scenario will be very different if you take a differnet warband.

I agree it's an excellent game. Dead Rising has 7 missions/quests but of course you can play as either side and the replay value is high. I've got the other 2 sets but I've not played them yet. I'm really looking forward to doing so though.

The missions are not interlinked - each is standalone. Jake has said he want's to add the role-play, character progression element and has been trying to convince Ronnie to say yes to another expansion
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye... and then it's just fun!

Thanks! Let's hold our thumbs for a more advanced expansion. At the present I'm sure content with simple game mechanics, but more roleplaying in future expansions is welcome.

Great games; you'll enjoy them. With Ancient Grudge allowing giving points values to choose warbands it's also a game that has a lot of longevity.

    Have fun.

I hear that Descent from FFG was really good, but copies are rather expensive on ebay. I've also heard that DKH is good, so .

Isn't Descent still hideously expensive though? I heard it was being re-released at some time, but in the meantime the price gougers on ebay have set it at £200+ in some cases. I think as you can get DKH for less than £30 you have your answer
‘General! Your warriors were the eaters of cities, lord, but with you to command us the War Hounds will be the eaters of worlds!’ For a moment Angron Swayed, his eyes and fists closed. But then he looked at Dreagher, from there to Khârn. And he smiled. ‘World Eaters,’ he said, slowly, tasting the sounds. ‘World Eaters. So you shall be, then, little brothers...’

I ordered the complete DKH bundle but it never turned up.
Probably won't bother trying to get it again.

I've got to ask, who did you order it from?

Direct from Mantic. I suppose it got lost in the mail at some point. NZ has an online stockist now, so maybe I'll get it from them at some point to reduce the postage risk.

Contact Mantic about it, they're excellent at sorting stuff like this out, even if it costs them. You can't just write off £70, that's a lot of money.

I've had something just plain disappear in the post before when ordering direct, and I got a replacement sent out.

Can't rule out a warehouse error, either.

If you play any of Mantic's games, check out my Battlescribe project for KoW and Warpath.

Ok, I'll check in with them. I figured there'd be no way of knowing where and when it got lost, but if they've sorted things like this out before then I'll give them a shot.

It's a fun side game, but I prefer games with more options such as Quest, Descent or Gears of War.

Definately worth contacting Mantic to see if they can sort it out for you.

They're legally obliged to provide you with the goods (regardless of the fact that they have great customer service).

I think I'm gonna pick up Green Menace. Beasts of War have a vid of a good demo game with Jake Thornton. It looks like a great, little tactical game.

It'd be good if they did an add on with treasure cards though.

Descent 2nd ed is due out in just over a week. I was never a big fan of the original which I found a bit slow and tedious. The 2nd is supposed to speed things up a lot. Super Dungeon Explore takes a similar format but is a much superior game with some gorgeous minis. I've never played DKH, mainly because my board gaming group doesn't accommodate two player games and I can't afford to buy a base set and the expansion which makes it multi-player.

Re: What do you think of Dwarf King's Hold?

I picked up all three of the synched games and they are excellent value.
I absolutely recommend getting all three as well because the third gamette expands the options into a whole new level of opportunites and it makes the system endlessly playable.
I ordered all three and they arrived in 4 days, well impressed with the service and the product.
