Thread: Underhive rulebook?

    Underhive rulebook?

So I did a search and there was one topic about this book, but its from 2010. I also know this isnt a new observation but im curious about it.

Anyhow my question is: Why is it that this book, (or PDF), comes with the usual rules for the house gangs, but has nothing really pertaining to the outlanders rules and gangs?

I just wondered how GW ever expected to make any money on a book and range with a ruleset that doesnt even cover half the models in that range?

Did they want people to use scavvies, redemptionists and ratskins as one of the house gangs? Were spyrers just not supposed to be used? I suppose people could make their own rules up but it does make me question why if there is actually a book for the outlanders...which they no longer sell and must be scavenged like a scavvy lunch from the ends of the internet.

We're fortunate in that my gaming group actually owns the original ruleset, the source book and outlanders, but after reading a bit of this one I just cant understand the mindset behind it.

Afterall they were hardly going to make money on something most people wouldnt see the point in buying, that then excludes half their range. I suppose when the book was released they were already looking away from Necromunda...but still...

He peeped not a peep, cried out nary a cry —
Just his sandals stuck out when the concrete was dry.

    Re: Underhive rulebook?

Well for a start the basic rulebook does cover more than half the range. Covered in that book are the six main house gangs plus the basic hired guns. Not covered are Ratskin Renegades, Scavvies, Enforcers, Redemptionists and Spyrers, 5 "gangs" and if none of the others at least the Enforcers and Spyrers have a much smaller range of figures than any of the original six. You could add into that various extra factions that appeared in differing publications but out of those pretty much only the Ash Wastes Nomads had an actual dedicated production run (Albeit on a blink-and-you've-missed-it basis), the rest were really just there so that players could use existing 40K models and factions in the underhive.

I think the answer has its origins in Necromunda's history. At it's core the game rules have changed little since the softback Rulebook and Sourcebook which came in the original boxed set, infact if you look at the .pdf the division between "Rules" and "Source" material is still there. Outlanders were added in almost as an afterthought so they were and remain separate publications. The existing Outlanders have changed considerably though, particularly Ratskins and Redemptionists from their original incarnations and let's be fair to GW for once on this one, the current or at least most recent rules for those which still have their own dedicated miniature ranges are/were available as free downloads from the GW website, so it's hardly a massive to hardship to save and print the .pdfs.

People were supposed to use them, if they wanted to. My guess is that GW just expected that if you had the wherewithall to go hunting down Necromunda in particular or Specialist games in general, you'd be able to show a little bit of initiative when it came to none-standard House gangs and the rules for them.

That's actually what I assumed, I should have mentioned that I enjoy inventing and discussing rules with others for gangs/characters/factions which dont have any, but I also know a fair few 'rule gods' who know of the old outlanders rulebook and can be a bit belligerent about such things.

As for the PDF's I did check the resources but all I see is the gang roster one : http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/co...&aId=21500022a

If you see the other ones there then is there another place I can get them from? Clearly it's an issue on my end. I didn't post this without checking first so you can understand my confusion.

Fortunately, as I said, my group does own a few copies of outlanders.

There is this thread just a few down where the question is asked about where the rules went. Almost everything is available on the Yakromunda Library anyway.

Ah thanks! I did read that thread, which is why I was surprised when I checked after it was mentioned they were back up and they still weren't; apart from the roster.

Well it's not a problem, if there are places like Yakromunda. Also like I said we do own copies of the originals, it was just a bit of silly indignant anger at something I thought was a problem when it turns out it might just be mine.

No, actually you're right, the Rulebook has gone. Good thing for me I've got it saved I guess...

The rulebook is still there, just the link is gone. It's still the first hit on Google.

    ^Thanks rick!!

Oh as an edit I was wondering if the underhive book contains the information for both the sourcebook and original necromunda rulebook?

I havn't had a chance to look at the battered copy we have at the club so I have no idea if the information in there is present in Underhive.

Are there changes as well from the older rules?
