The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 7 & April WIP

A bit late with the thread this time, but no biggie, I hope. Last month was good for the tale, two new painters, one resurrected and almost all of the rest of us had something new to post.

Welcome to the Tale of Board Game Painters

    What's it all about?
A lot of us wargamers have bought or been given some really impressive board games through the years that have had one extra special selling point; cool miniature game pieces. Mine (and my brother's) include Hero Quest, Space Crusade, Blood Bowl, Space Hulk (both editions) and most recently Chaos in the Old World.

When we opened the boxes we all dreamed of how awesome it would look (in just a few weeks, right?) when we'd have painted every single miniature to the best of our abilities. Awesome atmospheric board pieces with super realistic miniatures all over. Then a few weeks go by, sometimes a few months and for way too many of us a few years. The games are still awesome but all that paint seems to have taken the wrong turn at Albuquerque.

Enter the Tale of Board Game Painters. Now we're going to use the collective power of motivation to really get it done! Participants choose a miniature board game from their collection - one's enough for most of us; after all, they've been unpainted this long already, let's not get carried away - and paint it up in 5 to 10 batches over a period of 6 to 12 months.

At the end of each month (or the beginning of the next actually) we take photos of the month's good work, post it on that month's show off thread and give comments and encourage our fellow painters to keep on truckin'!!

More detailed description of the time plan and structure can be found in the OP of the original signup thread here!

Here are our painters at the beginning of this month:

Please let me know if you feel any of the info is wrong or if I've misinterpreted how/when you're painting the games.

    Board games finished: 8
    #1: steevn - Utopia - 5 minis painted
    #2: robscott5598 - Fury of Dracula - 5 minis painted
#3: steevn - Lady and the Muskateers - 6 minis painted
    #4: robscott5598 - Lost Patrol - 5 minis painted
    #5: robscott5598 - Claustrophobia - 6 minis painted
    #6: robscott5598 - Shadows over Camelot - 30 minis painted
#7: Solun Decius - Chaos in the Old World - 60 minis painted
    #8: steevn - Cadwallon - 20 minis painted
Let me know right away if you've finished a full game and I haven't added it here or if the number of minis is wrong. I'm easily confused by all this

In this thread we start by posting last month's painting, our batches of finished miniatures. Include info on what the miniatures are and what portion of the whole game we feel we've finished. Then we comment on each others good work and begin posting WIPs of our next batch.

Don't forget you can still sign up anytime!

    Happy Painting!

As I accidentally posted in the old thread already, here's what I got:

The heroes from Super Dungeon Explore!
Which I have since ruined with varnish. Well, a little at least.

Next up were supposed to be some kobolds, but for those I need some paints from Army Painter, which they have announced will be released later. So probably I'll do the chests and spawning points first.

I love all the SDE stuff I'm seeing. Although it's not my cup of tea from a design aesthetic, they certainly have tons of character and you lot have really brought them alive with your paint jobs. The white you have got on your bear thingy looks really nice EmperorNorton, white is a hard colour to highlight. I hope the varnish hasn't spoiled them too much, gutted if so.

Did you get the dreaded white mist? If so I had a similar issue with some models before. I tried to save them by giving them a coat of gloss and then a matt coat and I saved some of them (but not all).

    Here's my contribution anyway;

As for my WHQ quota this month, I'm giving myself a challenge, a Dwarf Brewmaster and 3 Minotaurs. Wish me luck!

@EmperorNorton: Great SDE models! Im really sorry to hear about your varnish issues! I hope they are salvagable.
@Daemonslave: Great work as usual! Do the bases take a long time to put together? They are very detailed!

My contribution this month is the Shadowwraith and the shipwreck pieces. I am now half way through the box! Which is lucky since half of my time in the tale has been expended...

I've been painting up the ships that (I felt) needed painting before they could be properly assembled, of which I only have the skaven one left, which will be next months work! Keep up the good work guys!

Thanks. The bases are from Dragon Forge - so they don't take any time to make, its the carving and fitting of the integrated bases that takes ages!

Fantastic stuff from everyone as always. Very inspiring!

I finished my investigators by painting the bases as Rob suggested but I haven't done anywhere as near a good job as he did but here goes:

I'm going to leave the other bases alone as they are massive and hold the info from the game so I'm gonna say Mansions of Madness is now finished:

I'm going to consider doing a second game. I could do Chaos in the old world as we are obsessed with that game at the moment, battlestar galactica or finishing dreadfleet which I keep stopping and starting. Decisions, decisions...

This month's thread is up here: http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=340399

@EmperorNorton: The SDE minis look super nice! Too bad about the varnish. Did you fix it?

@Daemonslave: Excellent work as always. The detailing on the hammer and shield are exquisit.

@HereBeDragons & Tzaranchilla: Very nice ghostly Shadewraiths there! Good Dreadfleet work, both of you. Great details on the shipwreck and islands.

@Skindred: Alright! Finished game already. Lots of minis with lots of details. Great work! Your set looks excellent.

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 7 & April WIP

Hey Solun! Sorry for the long disappearance. I had an accident which was I cut my foot in half and had to spend about 2+ months in convelesnce and PT. But I'm back now. I also noticed you forgot to add my completion of the 4 figures for Godzilla Kaiju World Wars, plus the extra +1 mothra figure.

I've been trying to get some of the old 3rd edition Talisman figures by Games Workshop done, and along the way I have been using both the original sculpted pieces from both that and Warhammer Quest for both games. Most of the figures are all in the same style and so I can use some of the Talisman figs for the warhammer Quest expansion characters and vise versa.

Here's what I have finished for the two games so far...

Firstly the original 4 characters from the Warhammer Quest boxed game. The Wizard, the Elf, the Barbarian, and the Dwarf.

my personal favorite is the Barbarian, since he is always the defacto leader of the group whenever he is on the board he automatically always gets the lantern as his only piece of special equipment. Since all the other characters have something special modeled on them to represent their special equipment but he didn't I felt the need to modify the figure to properly reflect his status as leader and lantern bearer....

Also I have some of the first batch of Talismen characters done.

The Halfling (which doubles as the Halfling Thief expansion character in Warhammer Quest)
The Assassin (Which also doubles as the expansion Assassin character for Warhammer Quest)
and the Wizard (Which I use as the Kislivette Raven Shaman Expansion Character over in Warhammer Quest)

Then we have the Necromancer/Liche (Which isn't a Tlaisman figure but I love the goofy oversized sculpt details and think it fits in really well with the GW models of this era)
The Talisman Sorceress (Who's base is not yet painted)
and the Talisman Druid (Which again, pulls double duty in Warhammer Quest as the expansion Druid character)

Lastly we have a newer Warhammer Ogre doing double duty as both the White Dwarf expansion character for Talisman 3rd edition and the Ogre Mercernary expansion for Warhammer Quest.

Unfortunately I tried a new brand of spray sealer varnish on this fig, and as you can tell it was WAY too glossy. 'eh live and learn I guess.
I can always just pretend he is a particulary greasy and sweaty big ogre.

Here are some additional fig pics for better focus compared to some of the above group shots.

And lastly I finished up the second version of Shadows over Camalot. This was basically me repainting a second set of Knights, objectives, and the two new characters (sir Belvedere & the wizard Merlin) because the expansion for the game uses the exact same card art and figures to represent the new Knights.
