Starter kits - Plastic, metal or resin...??

Hi, I saw some Warmachine/hordes in my local games store today - awesome looking models up close . The pics online really dont flatter the details with such bright, contrasting colour schemes.

The models on the board were Skorne and Khador. I know alot of the models are metal but are the battle boxes/war packs metal or plastic??

I lifted a skorne gladiator beast thing (gently of course) and it felt much light than expected. I guessed it was metal and plastic but after getting home and looking at some unboxing videos online it appears all metal. Then of course I've read PP changed the started sets to resin recently, is this true? I've also see on this forum than the battle boxes are being made in plastic also?

So basically i'm confused: Is it resin or metal? And are they releasing new plastic kits in the next few weeks?? (I'll wait of plastic personally)

Sorry it's such a long winded post for such a simple question, it's just I've bought my first finecast today (commissar yarrick) and it seems pretty awesome actually - very little flash, light, crisp detail, very very slightly flexible material and no miscasts.

I'm not looking forward to building/transporting those skorne warbeasts if they are metal...

    Many thanks for any replies.

    Nate.

PS. The staff at the store were really helpful and enthusiastic - especially about Warmachine/hordes. Very passionate about the game system and said it was the stores biggest seller. Given that I live in the UK I found this all very encouraging as a potential new player. So, a big shoutout to them * cough*firestorm games *cough* . Thanks.

Re: Starter kits - Plastic, metal or resin...??

The starter sets have been changed from metal to plastic. There are a few of the metal kits still around and if the starter on show had been set up and painted a while ago odds are that it is the old plastic set.

The Skorne Bronzeback Titan is being switched from a very hefty metal model to a resin-metal hybrid kit.

There is a Heavy Warbeast Plastic kit that allows you to build one of three different Titans.

Otherwise the rest of the Skorne range is metal.

I've yet to have any major problems with PPs' plastic (which is not styrine based so plastic glue doesn't work on it) or resin minitures. This is a company that once recalled one of its supplement releases that had a miss-print on a fluff page and covered the error with a sticker with the correct info on it. Thats how serious they take their product quality.

My only experience with finecast has been repairing the remains of models that friends of mine made the mistake of blind purchasing from gwPLC online and that they had gotten replaced. Congratulations on finding a Yarrik that is identical to my normal metal one (ie: flawless) but for 130-150% of what I paid for it in a more expensive material.

Re: Starter kits - Plastic, metal or resin...??

The warmachine starters have been plastic for almost two years now I think, and the hordes starters are being re-released in plastic in just a month or so. The old metal starters were ok but the skorne and khador sets were notorious for gaps. The plastic khador starter solved all of those gap problems, so the plastic skorne starter is sure to be a big improvement.

The only trouble you might have with PP's plastic is removing stubborn mold lines. As far as I know the placement of mold lines is better on the hordes models than it was when they made the warmachine plastics so this might be less a problem for newer kits. Paddyalexander is right about the plastic glue though, it wont work so use superglue.

Thanks paddy (from a taffy lol) I thought so judging from the blister packs on show... I'm not a fan of metal....even small models. But hey I used to love metal until GW when mostly plastic/finecast so maybe I've just been out of the metal loop for a while, so to speak.

Hi Dais, cheers for the info. Do you know why they are being re-released and what is different about them? Yes, it's hordes i'm talking about - specifically Skorne. Thanks.

    Many thanks.

They are being rereleased with completely new sculpts in plastic. The warlocks are plastic versions of the alternative sculpts released last year, but the rest are new. http://privateerpress.com/hordes/gal...tarter-plastic is the link to what will be in the new Skorne one.

Warmachine starters are all the plastic/resin now, and Hordes should be joining them next month (I think).

From their release schedule, it looks like they have a goal for all the generic units, warbeasts/jacks, and starter kits in this material, while leaving the solos, attachments, warcaster/locks, and character upgrades as being metal. They are announcing new plastic kits all the time, with the Heavies coming in combo kits that can be magnetized to run all 3-4 possible models with the one kit, even before the character upgrades come into play.

I'm really impressed by both offerings, having a Menoth plastic battlebox and Trollbloods metal warpack. Even the plastic mold lines weren't any worse than the flash on the metal.

Re: Starter kits - Plastic, metal or resin...??

Im new to warmachine and hordes and have now painted up two of the battleboxes (cygnar and Khador) and played about 5 games (vs trolls and menoth). I cant wait till the hordes plastic kits become available. As far as big models go I prefer plastic but I have to say that I am really impressed by the metal troop kits. Menoth exemplar errants, for example, have like 6 or 7 parts per model. They have the body, shield, 2x pauldron (shoulder pads), sword, crossbow, head. It is a completely different way of doing metals that I am unused to from other gaming systems.

The long and the short of what I am saying is - jump in - you will love the models, you will love the game. The mold lines on the plastics can be painful at times but so can greenstuffing a miscast finecast model (lets face it - they replace the miscast ones but everyone out there is fixing their free model so they have two....)

As far as choosing a faction - dont worry about the special abilities a given faction has (the game is generally well balanced), don't worry about the materials that the majority of units have (battlebox games are the best way to start and you are best off playing heaps of those first and everything else is moving to plastics if you cant stomach the metals), just make your decision based on what you like the look of and maybe the background (although even this is excellent for each faction).

Looking back this doesn't really answer your question... Oh well...
