    Movie Tropes You Love

    Greetings,

What are some of the tropes in modern movies that you actually like to see, or are a sucker to watch everytime.

Here is a list of ones that I always enjoy or am drawn to watch.
    1. Hitman/assassin trying to reform or go straight
    2. Fights in elevators
    3. John Woo-isms
    4. Sword fights
    5. Hot librarians/Researchers
    6. Fighter pilot chatter

Here are some that always make me laugh and smile, even when the movie sucks.
    1. Things that explode for no reason
    2. Bad one-liners

    How about you?

Isolation themes like The Thing. Also, movie endings that leave a visceral impression like 9th Company.

I'm a sucker for well choreographed fist fights, for example the Bourne series and Casino Royale. Old Boy's corridor hammer-scene was also awesome, if a little obvious with the missed blows sometimes. It's got to be pretty real though, whilst films like Hero etc are pretty and all that, they just don't grab me as much as a more realistic scene.

Also, anything to do with atmospheric re-entry gives me a serious case of goosebumps. The Cheyenne Dropship dropping from the Sulaco in Aliens counts as one of my favourite movie scenes of all time, as well as Battlestar Galactica jumping into atmosphere and then proceeding to drop like a stone whilst disgorging Vipers. Damn, giving me goosebumps just typing that. Oh, and the scene from Serenity where Serenity itself starts to land as the camera rotates around it and the theme music plays.

Bunraku should please you, if you haven't seen it.

OT- After the end of the world-esque scenarios- The Day After Tomorrow, the Walking Dead, Jericho, that kinda thing. Also, genuine anti-heroes, not clichéd ones.

Like Burnthem I also like fist fights, especially fast paced ones like the on in the Bourne Trilogy and in the recent Bond films, and Rush hour , actually more enjoyable than large special effects scenes with guns and and explosions.

I also like unneeded screaming for comic effect, they just get me every time, Homer Simpson's, the fifth element, and one of them also recently in the Muppets (top top film).

I like Dark twisted film that creeps you out after the movie finished. I strongly recommend the following two films by up and coming director, Christopher Smith.

Triangle and Black Death are two films that will make you think and you would want to watch it again. His earlier films sucks.. but these two will give you the creep.

I still can't watch Triangle by my self.... just too creepy.

    The ULTRA-TEAM!

Usually comprised of the following members:

    The newb in training
    The old has-been mentor
    The nerdy/science/religous one
    The brute
The under-powered female (who usually has some sort of healing ability)

Anything involving someone being wronged and getting their vengeance. Punisher, The Count of Monte Cristo, the tv show Revenge. The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite movies ever.

    Ones I hate:
I hate things that explode into an orange fireball for no reason. Movie explosions are the opposite of real explosions, in that they tend to unfold predictably, harmlessly (to our heroes) and in slow motion. There's a good explosion at the beginning of Children of Men.
Heavy foley annoys me (not everything needs its own sound effect). So does theme music that the director doesn't know what to do with (you'll notice this as it fades out halfway through a scene with no clear transition. Sometimes they get cute and one of the characters turns off the radio or something).

    Ones I love:
well, everyone likes to see a well choregraphed fight in an elevator

But I'm partial to a good eighties training montage:

Desperate last stands/heroic charges like in The Last Samurai, We were Solders, Zulu etc. I just find the idea of a group of soldiers who are outnumber, outgunned and about to be overwhelmed choosing to go down fighting rather than simply lay down and die. I know it’s often really cheesy, but I don’t care!

For those of you that love/hate things that explode for no reason, you might want to see 21 Jump Street. It jokes about how things explode in movies that really shouldn't at all a couple times. It's also one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, so its got that going for it as well.

My favorite things in movies are when they poke fun at other movies or cultural goings on.

I prefered the scene in 21 jump street when Captain Dickson was talking about how the police were uanble to come up with any new ideas and kept remaking older ones- it was an amusing dig at directors who keep remaking old movies. The explosions anti climax was good aswell.

Creepy women, notably: Dark Water, Audition, A Tale of Two Sisters and Ringu. Also, I second Lothlanathorian's contribution of people out for revenge.

    Re: Movie Tropes You Love

I'm having a hard time enjoying anything that's become a "trope" because at this point it's been used inflationary and therefore doesn't hold much interest to me. I don't think that "trope" as a term works all that much simply because how much it covers. It's whole film concepts, certain gimmicks in terms of technical stuffs, writing, editing, it's characters, situations and so on.

That said, of course I enjoy well done things. Sure, well-done fights are great, gripping drama is great, etc. I enjoy cheesy films a lot but if something works depends on context and execution rather than an idea. Zombies are a prime example. The concept has potential for all kinds of good things but over the past 10 years, it's been used as something you have in your film and simply based on that you hope it works. It doesn't. A film requires several elements that have to work together to create something that's greater than the sum of its parts (or "tropes" based on what that internet site says what a film trope is). This includes subjective and objective things.

In the end it comes down to personal tastes but also to how something is executed. Of course we all enjoy "well done" things so I'm having a very hard time claiming to like a certain thing under all circumstances.

Any film or tv show that has the noise of a cat being stood on/thrown across the room. No matter the context it almost always has me in stitches. One of the best examples of this is the film problem child.

That Elevator fight scene gets extra points, because even though they are in an elevator, they still manage to break everything you can possibly break in an elevator.

That's a classic Bond/60's fight scene. Everything in the room where the fight takes place MUST be broken by the end fo the fight. Love it!

If we're going for general concepts, I'd say:

Anti heroes. Such a cliche, but when done well and not just for the sake of it, I find this kind of character really engages me with the film.

The A-verage Team, as someone said earlier. As much as I berate every film which includes the classic line up, I still enjoy it.

A good cliffhanger ending. Nothing like never knowing....
