Thread: Good Gold primer?

    Good Gold primer?

I'm looking for a gold primer to prime my grey knights instead of the typical silver. I know it goes against the fluff but w/e. I'm tired of seeing the same paint style on every GK army. I plan on priming it gold then highlighting with a different color of gold but I don't want to prime black or white and layer the GWS gold 3-6 times and I'd rather not mess up some models with a bad primer. Does anyone know a tried and true gold primer?

I've found that when you use a colour like Bone as a base, or Vallejo Orange Brown, I don't have to give it a hundred layers. I'm with you, I did my Grey Knights in Gold with a Red Wash, which I like very much.

just get a good gold spray paint. spray paint is primer. hence why you never see a krylon black primer, only spray paint

Are you talking metallic gold or gold as in the orangy yellow paint? If you are talking about metallic, you could go all out and gold leaf the models. Traditionally a dark reddish brown was used as a base under gold leaf to give it a richer tone.

Kind of like a bright metallic gold, a little like Dante but moderately brighter.

Prime with a brown close to the gold colour - that will give you good solid base coverage for a gold overcoat.

Vallejo does an awesome series of metallics called "liquid gold", I just ordered the whole line. They're alcohol based and there are 5 different shades/tones of gold of the 8 paints in the line.

The best thing to do is basecoat it either white or grey, and then start with the darkest gold and work your way up to the highligts.

    Here's the link if you're interested: http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/gb/liquid-gold-gb.html

That gold looks good. Now give it 2 washes of gryphon sepia :0 And I hope you played Kassadin.

Actually, since it is a gold spray paint nothing will stick to it. I had to use the foundation paints/base paints to get the colors to stick to them. If I wanted red, i had to use the base red than a layering red. I think it is because of all of the metallic bits in the spray paint. It actually looks quite good and I really like the shining gold effect, it reminds me of the picture of the emperor fighting Horus. I don't think a wash would be necessary or even possible lol.

I'd have to give it a try. I'd like some depth to the lettering and cracks.

Well I tried it and while it did cut down on the shininess it really brought out the depth of the model. I was surprised the wash stuck even if it pooled in some areas a bit more than others. Thanks for the suggestion. It looks even better now.

This is a picture of a pally with the wash. It's a different one but of course same concept.

I had a similar problem when I used a silver spray, what i found to work, however, was after letting the silver dry, i gave it a light spray of matt varnish (Army Painters to be exact) and found that when it dried, it was much easier to paint other paints on top of the gold then.

It's not a primer, but Testor's does make a gold for their automotive model line in a spray. I think it's the Model Master line.
"From the fires of betrayal, Unto the blood of revenge, We bring the word of Lorgar, The Bearer of the Word, The favored son of Chaos; All praise be given unto him, For those that would not heed, We offer praise to those that do, That they might turn their gaze our way, And gift us with the boon of pain, To turn the galaxy red with blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods." - Excerpt of the 341st book of the Epistles of Lorgar.

It's Krylon gold metallic spray paint. It works wonderfully with a earthshade wash.
