    15 New Shorts: Any Reviews?

Anyone read the new short stories put out to celebrate Black Library's 15 years? I've been eying a few, so I'm curious if somebody has recommendations.

I've read all of them, and frankly, they are all fantastic. The best ones IMO are Evil Eye by David Annandale, Army of One by Rob Sanders, All is Dust by John French, Blood Blessing by Sarah Cawkwell, Blood Sport by Josh Reynolds, and Only Ash Remains by Nick Kyme. The others are also good though.

Here's a review of all of them from a friend:

Army of One is brilliant, and it once again confirms that Rob Sanders has a deep affinity for the grimdark of the 40K setting.

All is Dust is a surprisingly well written short by John French (probably a typo in your post, shadowhawk :P)

The Weakness of Others was also damn good, and it was the one I least expected anything from, being unfamiliar with Laurie Goulding until this point.

For The Fallen is ADB's contribution to the collection. It almost made top spot in my mind, until Army of One came out...

For the Fallen was excellent. The rest were pretty much a waste of 79p. Which doesn't sound like much, then you realise there's fourteen of them. Not impressed.

    Tough crowd. Ouch.

They weren't all great, but For The Fallen, Army of One, and the Weakness of Others are more worthwhile than the others. I also really enjoyed the Dark Angels short, 'Easy Prey.'

I really enjoyed them all, I found them really nice shorts to fill in between doing other things- going slightly against the grain I wasn't that keen on For the Fallen, but there you go. the 79ps do add up and they are very short. If this had been an issue of Hammer and Bolter it would have been the best I think

But this is not a run of the mill release. These eShorts marked the 15 years of Black Library publishing Warhammer fiction. They are "special". Keeping that in mind, I really don't have a problem with the price. They could have been a pound each and I would still have bought them all.

For me, the value wasn't just reading the stories by some of my favourite authors (and as introductions to those I haven't read). The biggest value was in seeing how the pros can distill a complete story in a 1000 words. As an aspiring writer, that was a great benefit, especially as the BL short story submissions require a 1000 word sample as an introduction to YOUR/MY/OUR work.

    Different strokes for different people.

Oh I don't disagree shadowhawk, I had similar thoughts about them, as you say the value of them if higher than the length. I wasn't complaining about the price as I really enjoyed them but I can see wht that might be a concern for some
