2 vs 2 2x1500p per side. Takes 3-4 hours to play so 2 games + killpoint every time we have a "games day" (We start at 12:00 and usually stop at around 22:00 if I got work the day after.) I guess that this might be an unusual but we are just 4 players and none off us feels like waiting between games.

2k has been the norm for me but I've just started going to a club that plays 1500pts.

Our group does 2000 most often. Occasionally 2500. But 2000 probably 95 percent of the time.

I still prefer good old 1500pt. games.

I do play 1750, 1850 and 2000pt. games as well fairly regularly.

2000, though getting more 1750 point games in

I find it easier to build an army i like at 2000 points.

When did these weird points values of 1750, 1850 and such come into prominence? They seem very weird to me. I'm from the days of yore and round 1k, 1.5k and so on.

As for me, I don't play often, and when I do it's typically 400pts (40k in 40 mins) or 1000 points games. I'd like to find the space and time to get that up to 1500 though.

I might not remember correctly since I don't go to tournies that often but iirc the Dutch battle of the Clubs is 1750pts. That is the reason pretty much everyone around where I live plays 1750pts. The local tournament organiser organises the tournies in 1750 aswell so people can test their lists for botc, and everyone else thus continuously plays 1750 to test their armies for the local tourny. Everyone who doesn't play in any tournaments still brings along 1750 becuase it increases the amount of people they can have a pick up game with.

I'm sure it's reasons like this that cause certain points to be mroe common than others, often national and large tournaments have effects like this. I'm not a tournament player myself but to be honest, I don't mind, a battle is a battle, no matter how much points people want to play.

We hardly ever play below 2000. You just don't seem to fit enough of the good stuff in below that...

The counter-argument would be that playing smaller games forces more thoughtful list design and demands hard choices be made rather then being able to spam the uber units...

The game is very different at different points levels.

Less than 1000 points is very 'hard' in that units tend to be irreplaceable and every loss really hurts. Death star style super units are more dominant as they're disproportionately hard to deal with. You're likely to find some armies are even more overmatched than normal at this size- but the game is fast and furious. Best played on a 4x4 table.

1500 Points, the old UK standard is a nice size for decently paced games. Death Stars still have a disroportionate advantage but armies have a chance at dealing with them. Best played in a 6x4 where the table can feel a little sparse- which is a good thing as it emphasises good movement.

1750-1850 which seems to be the most common value these days is like 1500 but a bit more cramped on a 6x4. Death Stars start to fail at this points value and it better supports MSU style lists which can be seen as great or dull depending on your preferences.

2000+ is a beast of a game and cramped on a 6x4, which can lead to a 'feeding the meatgrinder' feel to the game. Armies generally get to bring all their toys but that really shows up, generally older, armies that don't really have anything decent to spend the extra points on, often because they've filled their useful force org slots. Newer armies tend to have enough decent options in each slot to keep improving as points increase.

Final point is that different armies like different points values- some armies notably fall off the cliff once they've filled out certain slots and end up taking filler units to make up the points, while others only really come to life once they have enough points to take certain units ir combinations

Re: What is the most common battle size you play

When i used to play back in 3rd ed every game we played was 1500 for about 3-4 years with very occasional 2000pts battles.

When i got back into 40k about 18 months ago i built up a 1500 pt guard army and thought 1500 was still the norm but now everyone at my club plays 2000pts! so i had to quickly get my army up to 2000pts to play and now 2000 is all we ever play, it just feels nice to have plenty of stuff on the table although the game does last 3 hours and upwards.

Re: What is the most common battle size you play

My biggest issue with game of 1,000 points or less is that Dark Eldar can be down right terrifying. Three Ravagers with disintegrators, flckerfields, and night shields comes in at 375 points and with such a low point cap, the massed armor of larger games is left behind, allowing for anti-tank duties to be left to Warrior squads and their transports (although I do that in larger games too). The lower points makes a mounted dark light spam list insanely good since your foe needs to pick and choose his units with care while you've already taken the filled the best part of your 1,850 list and am left to pick from extra choices. The list below is 845 points and has all you would need to deal with most 1,000 point take-all-comers lists (I've done it to make smaller games more palatable for others). With 155 points to spare, you could add a fourth Warrior squad and little something special for the Haemonculus (I like the hex rifle for fun) or you could add five more Warriors and a dark lance to two of your squads, or go another route. Are there counters to this? Of course there are, but most of them require your foe to sacrifice too much elsewhere, leaving the vast bulk of pick up lists woefully unprepared to handle it. Of course, you could be a decent person and play nice with friendly lists, but that violates your army's background .

Normally I play Kill team and 1500, no higher. For Apoc, we're talking 10,000+ each side, with a load of teams, where even though you're on the same side as someone, they may have secret objectives that require them to hinder you. It's really fun, as you have to watch your allies actions as well as your enemies.

1500-2000 depends on what people want to play.

The standard around here is 2k, but 1500 has been more fun for me lately.

In my gaming group we normally play in the 1000-1500 pt range.

2k around here. With 1500 point games when we want small battles. Or if we are doing a 2v2 its 1500 per person.

500 points but then I get to do 4 games in one afternoon =) Its also nice for testing out armies, several of the local players have 4 or 5 500 point armies.
