    Thinking of Epic Necrons

Will I empty my wallet with them ? Or are they reasonably cheap ?

Where do I obtain the models ?

They can be reasonably cheap. The most commonly used models are a combination of these guys:

    and forumware.

    Forumware ?

Also where are their rules ? They seem to be two types , the epic raiders and several fan made lists.

Epic Raiders is probably the closest to an "official" Necron list, and contains pretty much everythign you would ever want. I would recommend building an army with this in mind, however "official" and "fan made" do not really compute with a game that has had no support in years.

Are you on the Tactical Command forums? Ask around there for Necron proxies and I'm sure you will be pointed in the right direction.

The rules are NetEA approved, meaning that any tournament that allows NetEA lists is advised to allow them. They're not approved for the EpicUK tournament circut, however, as EUK has their own set of lists.

Be advised they are a very different army to play against. If one's never played against them before the first game will be a loss against a reasonably competant player. However once one learns how to fight them they are a very balanced list overall.

I second the suiggestion to look around Taccoms, as well as suggestions on which models are appropriate to use there are plenty of tactical discussions to get you started.

    A few more questions.

What IS Netepic exactly ? Is it possible to use the printed rulebook with it ?

I'm looking at Netepic because it seems to have scope for more variety then just the five armies and it's variants (Marines, orks, eldar, guard, chaos marines) and it has every army currently out.

    Re: Thinking of Epic Necrons

NetEpic hearkens back to the days of SM2 in terms of rules. Army list availability should not be a factor in choosing which game system you wish to play with because NetEA has just as many (possibly more) lists. The development is more open, however, so things aren't as organized. With that said, you will have more people to play with using NetEA lists. EpicUK won't allow them, but I know that those players do play with NetEA lists in non-tournaments. NetEpic is highly organized and comprehensive, but has rules that are completely incompatible with NetEA and EpicUK.
Tactical Wargames is the site to go to for Epic, regardless of what system you want.

The Mosc speaks the truth. NetEpic not only hearkens back to the SM2 days, my understanding is it is a direct development from the SM2 ruleset. If you're familiar with the BFG 2010 documents, it's that kind of progression - the basic mechanics are identical, but there's been some tinkering with specific rules or costs that deserved it.

    Re: Thinking of Epic Necrons

    Maybe we confused him.

There have been four official editions of Epic. The second, often referred to as SM2 ("Space Marine"), has been updated by fans and that is called NetEpic. It's a more detailed game than the later versions, which a lot of people think of as a pretty different game.

Third Edition (Epic 40k) simplified things a lot for a more streamlined and tactical game. It wasn't well received, but GW tried again with 4th ed (Epic: Armageddon) and that is the most commonly played version. It uses the printed rulebook, though I think the .pdf available online has a few tweaks. GW didn't finish releasing all the army lists, but fans have been writing them under the NetEA organization. (There are two other groups that release army lists, EpicUK and another group in France.) The lists are tested, vetted (look for the "NetEA APPROVED" label), and are generally better balanced than the originals. It's definitely tournament friendly, as long as you stay between a 2,000-5,000pt range.

    Re: Thinking of Epic Necrons

it should also be mentioned that many of the guys who were active in developing the game and lists for GW are still working on them now over on Taccomms, which at least in my mind lends them a good air of 'official-ness'

The really old Epic: Space Marine Legion box came with, among other things, 16 "Chaos Androids" which look like, and were likely the progenitor of, necron infantry.
There's an empty Legion box out in my shed, it's relatively small. It might be tricky getting your hands on said Chaos Androids these days though.

You no longer need to. Exodus Wars Edenites fill the niche nicely. There's a long and convoluted backstory behind them that I won't bore you with, but suffice to say the resemblance is not entirely accidental.
