Warhammer Fantasy: Atlanteans (Or adding greek units to warhammer)

Hello warseers (Is that right? I have never used the plural of people who go on warseer before). Anyway...

So this is a an entire army list I have been working on and off for quite a while, just coming back every couple of months and tweaking it and making it better.

And before I post it I will give a quick rundown of exactly what this list is and how it "should" work.

Basicly one day while comparing a few warhammer armies to real world counterparts (Lizardmen=Aztecs, Bretonnia=Middle age Europe etc) I noticed that the largest source of monsters and myths wasnt present. So I decided why not make one up? And so thats the basic idea behind this army, to bring greek monsters (not already present) and real world units together in one list.

The army works around its worship of the gods, in a slightly different way to chaos. Certain units can take a blessing from a god granting them a buff for example. And their are a trio of items that change some of the available units, sounds odd now I think back over it. Another theme of the list is that there is only a single true infantry unit, hoplites. These guys form the main battleline and the variety of blessings let them be changed to suit different roles. And for basic infantry they are also very good.

If any of this sounds familier to you this is because I did post this before, a long long time ago.

Since this is quite a block of text I will split the unit types into seperate posts. And I will give a special rule rundown afterwards to explain new ones. So hold tight while I add stuff....

P.S. This is a complete work in progress, there are units with no points costs, abilities that may be broken, units that may be garbage, so please, if you have an idea let me know.

Re: Warhammer Fantasy: Atlanteans (Or adding greek units to warhammer)

I decided to post all the spcial rules up at the top, make them easier to find and referance too. (There are alot of rules for the special characters, I will only post them if asked, as their is alot of them and as far as I have seen special characters dont interest everyone)

    Special rules:
Shield Wall: All units with this rule cannot gain a parry save with a hand weapon and shield, instead they get it for haveing a spear and shield.

Expert archers: Unit rerolls all 1s to hit with shooting.

Blazing Regeneration: 4+ Regen that is not effected by flaming attacks.

Belly bow: Units ranged attacks peirce ranks like a bolt-thrower, but only the front rank can ever shoot.

Confusion: Unit that kills a model with this rule in combat suffer from stupidity permanantly.

Fall back: Unit does not cause panic tests in friendly units when fleeing from a charge.

Petrify: A unit within 12" takes D6 hits per Gorgon in the unit. Units hit take an I test or lose a wound, no regen/armour saves allowed.

Call to the Gods (Commander only): Once per game at the beginning of your turn you may declare your Hoplite Champion is calling on the gods. He then takes a leadership test, if passed every unit within his Inspiring Presence range gains all the effects of the Hoplite Champion’s blessing until the end of the turn. If the leadership test is failed then the effect fails and cannot be used again this turn, but you may try again at the beginning of another turn.

Zeus’s Forgers: A Cyclops unit can declare before a charge to make all their attacks have the flaming attacks special rule. This lasts until they leave combat.

Royal Guard: Hetairoi carry different weapons and can pick before a charge which weapon they will use in that fight, once the combat starts they cannot change their weapons until they are out of combat. They carry two hand weapons and due to their training can gain the additional attack special rule from them. They also have better warhorses than usual.

    Equipment:
Heavy Shield: Works like a normal shield, only it gives +2 to the wearer armour save instead of +1.

The way this works is that you give 1 Temple priest in your army 1 of 3 free magic armours, these unlock different units. *Is Hades **Is Posiedon ***Is Zeus.

One last thing, there is no Special unit for Poseidon yet. I have run through many ideas, but none seem to feel right. If anyone has a good idea for a monster that fits please let me know, thank you =).

Ok I know nobody has replied yet but I have had an idea to help the Hoplite lord choice out (as combat characters, especially lord onews, kinda suck in 8th).

I was thinking of giving him an area buff based on his blessing, possibly a one use only ability, possibly just the same effect as the blessing, just affecting more units than just him.

Also I am considering makeing the Poseidon special unit Satyrs, but will need to make them as different as possible from beastmen.

Please feel free to comment or make sudgestions.

Re: Warhammer Fantasy: Atlanteans (Or adding greek units to warhammer)

Over 100 veiws and no comments? Oh well. At least I know people are looking at this.

Ok so I chatted with some other players to try and point out anything in here that was broken, most fingers ended up pointing at the special characters (no serprise there) and frankly they are pretty low on my priority list so will probably do them last, most dont have points values anyway so wont feature in early playtests.

A few other things, to reduce the number of non-god specific monsters I have removed the sphinx, who I always felt were a bit clumbsy and didnt fit the theme too well. Also with the tomb king sphinx it just generates confusion. So I will replace them with a second heavy cavalry unit called Hetairoi. What makes these guys different to the other cavalry taking the same slot? Well they will have all thier equipment pre-bought, so will be less customisable and more expensive. Also they are far more offensively minded, so much so they lack shields completly, making them a little fragile but very hard hitting.

And lastly on the new unit front there is the Dragon Nymph, which is the special posiedon unit. Based on the monster Echidna from mythology, these ones are supposed to look alot like female dragon ogre shaggoths with wings. With Monsters making thier way into other armies special slots I thought putting one in dosent seem so bad now.

Ability-wise the Cyclops have lost single-eye, mainly because it was broken. And will now have a new rule called Zeus's Forgers, which lets them make thier attacks flaming at will until the end of thier turn. Basically fluff-wise they built weapons alot like Zeus's and so can attract lightning bolts to them to gain a bit of thier power.

I have also toned down the Gorgons to just being D6 worth of shots, not a template attack.

Secondf ability change is the Hoplite Champions (who will be renamed to Commanders), basicaly their new ability lets them call to the gods for aid. Once per game they can take a leadership test at the begining of the turn, if they pass all friendly units withing their Inspiring Presence range gains all the effects of the Commanders blessing, allowing for once last heroic charge into battle. If they fail the test they can retake it on a later turn.

    And thats all for now.

As an idea for a Poseidon unit: Tide Riders.

ID:	138048
War Beasts. Ethereal, Magical Attacks, Immune to Flaming Attacks, Body of Water, Stormy Seas, Tears of Poseidon.
    M8 WS5 BS0 S4 T3 W1 I3 A2 Ld6 24pts

    Body of Water:
If the unit is in, or partially in, a water feature (as agreed by both players upon terrain deployment), then this unit gains the Regeneration (4+) (this Regeneration is not negated by Flaming Attacks). If the unit is 6" or more away from a water feature, the unit gains the Unstable rule.

    Stormy Seas:
    Bound Spell (Power Level 6)
If successfully cast, place a lake feature no larger than 4" diameter partially or wholly within 6" of the unit. If the feature would go where a unit currently is, every model under the feature that does not have the Body of Water rule takes an initiative check. If failed, the model takes an automatic S1 hit.

    Tears of Poseidon:
When this unit is destroyed through combat or shooting, roll 1D6. On a 1 or 2, nothing happens - remove the unit as normal. On a 3+ place a lake feature no larger than 4" diameter on the footprint that the unit would have had. If the feature would go where a unit currently is, every model under the feature that does not have the Body of Water takes an initiative check. If failed, the model takes an automatic S1 hit. After this, place the unit on top of/in the water feature. Then remove the unit of Tide Riders as casualties.

Everything's probably unbalanced, but hopefully there is something good there, and hopefully you like it!

Re: Warhammer Fantasy: Atlanteans (Or adding greek units to warhammer)

It seems to suffer from somethnig every unit I made had at one point suffered from, too much fluffiness. It has so much stuff about it thats fluffy that its either really weak or stupidly strong.

It seems you have worked very hard on this, but with ethereal and regen they are extremely tough, and near invincible if in water (makes sense though). Also they focus so heavily on water and for as long as I have played warhammer over the year I have played 1 game that had water features on it....

So while this is nice and I appriciate the effort, any opponent who would allow me to use a homebrew (and possibly broken) army list would probably draw the line at letting me have rarely used terrain out, purely to benefit me. This is also why I am looking to change the blessing of Poseidon to something else. (Most of the people at my local GW said they dont put water out becasue its annoying)

Another reason is that I already have a unit for Poseidon in the special slot, the Dragon Nymph, which lives underground and could easily be released by an earthquake (Poseidons department).

However. I do belive that I could try to use something like this as a magical mount for characters, probably giving them to all 4 infantry characters (actually letting my mages ride something), could use it as a monstrous cavalry option, replacing the behemoth chariot, who felt was a little wedged into the characters section.

On a quick note a few points values have been tinkered with (Mostly as a reaction to abilities changing) and this will probably be how they wil remain for my first playtest. I just have to write a list and build some models now...

    1 Vampire lord on steed
    1 Vampire Lord on foot
