Thread: Open Topped Transports

    Re: Open Topped Transports

It continues to amaze me why people want to compare real life situations and wars with a fantasy sci fi tabletop game...
Its fantasy for a reason and not every rule will make logical sence since its a game that needs a form of balance to be good.

    Re: Open Topped Transports

@Exitas-Acta-Probat: It is now very difficult if not impossible to do so. IF the exits are blocked then the passengers can disembark from any point of the vehicle. IIRC if even that isn't possible the vehicle is removed and the passengers are placed where it was, with models only removed if they cannot be placed further than 1" from the surrounding enemy.

Partly this is why Tyranids have such an issue dealing with troop transports in CC. We used to be able to trap and kill foolish units...avoiding this fate was a good incentive to actually get out of one's transport. Now you may as well just wait, get popped, deploy and then rapid-fire the assaulting unit to bits.

GW should really just include an appropriate crater in each Raider and Venom boxed set.

And that's a static model. Representing a freezeframe of some moment in time. Does the deldar codex say that deldar ride their raiders like hood ornaments? Because if not, the model has no bearing on this discussion.

There's also the matter of speed. In game the raider might move X inches just like the ork trukk. But in universe that doesn't mean they both travel the same speed. You'd be hard pressed, superhuman or not, to get a clear shot on the contents of something moving 100+, especially if it was coming right for you.

Even in Gorka Morka you could not shoot at the passengers, on the other hand they could be injured by penetrating rounds. Do you want complicated (by book keeping) vehicle skirmish rules in a normal 40K game?

The speed issue...well, it should be like bikes; if you move 12 + etc inches, you gain a 3++ cover save, for example

I think that, realistically, you should be able to fire at the passengers of open-topped vehicles.

But then, realistically, you should also be able to shoot and kill the drivers of land-speeders and the like, although this wouldn't happen, because no such mechanic exists.

However, as others have pointed out, I think this would be a very bad idea for game-balance reasons. It would only really affect 3 armies - DE, orks, and Necrons. I just don't see any of those as needing to be taken down a notch.

If you wanted to make a change in the name of realism it would include the chance of hitting passengers when shooting at the vehicle, but I still don't think that actually targeting passengers under battle conditions is all that realistic.

It really depends on the vehicle in question. In the vehicles modeled for the Ork Trukk or the DE Raider, there really isn't much, if any, direct protection for the passengers, and instead rely on the speed of the vehicle making it more difficult to actually hit the passengers. The Ork Battlewagon, though, easily could have passenger protection.

In this case, it's in mostly due to game balance.

Jetbikes are small targets that move really really fast. Should people be unable to target them at all? Is it enough to give jetbikes a cover save to represent the difficulty of hitting them?

If people get to shoot at the pilots of Landspeeders then my Daemons get to assault the turn they come into play. Deal!
