Nurgle Burgles - Zombie Wombies - And big blobby guy...

    Dear All

Welcome to our latest blog relaying the good times, the bad times and the lessons we learn along the way.

For those of you new to our life, let me fill you in on the back ground.

My name is Daniel and I am a wargamer. I've been painting and playing for circa 20 years now having started in the late 80s when my father introduced me to the world of wargaming and painting. I've collected far too many armies and painted way too many soldiers, but my collection is getting to the stage now where it meets my approval and I am looking to finish the gaps in my collection over the next few years.

My good lady is called Rebecka... and she is... well... not a wargamer yet. BUT she's a bloody good painter considering the fact that she only started doing this 6 months ago or so.

Having started and failed really on a High elf and Dwarf project back in the summer, mainly due to the fact that Rebecka returned to her native Sweden for 4 months, now finally having her back here with me for good we've decided to start a new story.

We were both invited by our local GW store to attend a Doubles tournement in April, but having no 40k army of her own we decided to start building a themed doubles army, certainly not ready for this year, but hopefully in the future. Having trawled over codexes and websites, themes and stories, we settled on a tale of Nurgle, one side of the force focusing on Nurgle Marines, Death Guard and one of my favourite characters of the 40k Universe, Typhus (Typhon) and she would pursue an army of Daemons, but, not using the Nurgle Daemon models but using representation of a Zombie Plague bought on by Typhons plague.

    So... in short...

My name is Daniel and I am a wargamer - Death Guard CSM.

Cherri (rebecka) - Chaos Daemons using Zombie representations.

We have decided to use Warmachine bases for all the army as we like the rolled corners and the opportunity to make special looking bases.

And the theme for the bases will be a swamp look, with sand, lychen, foliage, branches, and pools of glossy water effect over a muddy green colour.

I don't really suppose we have an army list we are aiming towards.

Id like a Daemon Prince, Typhon, some possessed and chosen, and obviously plague marines.

Rebecka is aiming towards a GUO (using the Forgeworld Daemon Prince model, whom she lovingly calls Big Blobby Guy) Epidemius, using a preacher on a lectern, Zombies and as plague bearers, and daemon princes ,using the renegade ogryns covered in gas masks etc.

    More updates to come...

    Regards

    Hello

I started with doing work on a plague ogryn as i liked the model. We have a greenish brown colour that we are using over the entire army which is done using a yellowish base coat and using green wash and gryphon sepia (i think) wash over the top.

The metal is using a non metal style, using grey and mud wash and then highlighting up the grey. We have used a thin downed Vermin brown with water put in random places to get a rusty look on the metals.

The skin was hard for me to paint. I wanted to make the skin look bad and pale. (edit Daniel - i think she means poorly and sickly as opposed to BAD).

The real thing that i loved most about this model was the model itself. I loved the shape and the movement of the model.

I will get some pictures of zombies up in a little bit.

    Rebecka

    Dear all

The first steps on this plagued journey for me revolved around getting a good colour scheme together and an understanding of how it would work on the various marines.

The colour for the bulk of the army revolves around a flat bubonic brown undercoat over white spray. This gives a really vivid and bright base to work from. I've then washed with both Thrakka Green and Gryphonne Sepia to give the green brown decayed look. After all the washes are dry I give the whole model a very light dry brush of rotting flesh.

The Metal work is created using a codex grey base coat followed by a Devlan Mud wash. The grey is then highlighted through three stages of codex -> 50:50 codex fortress -> fortress, before having a very thinned out vermin brown added to areas as rust.

Other areas such as skins and bones are carried out in a bespoke fashion varying from one to another to give an individual feel.

    Dear All

I've also been working on my first set of Possessed marines, focusing on the retention of the colour whilst making not of the differences that you get within the possessed models and modifactions themselves.

One real highlight for me doin the possessed was the incredible models themselves. I have found that having painted well in excess of 400-500 vanilla marines over the years, its really inspiring to paint proper chaos marines for the first time. I love the detail on the armour and the great work on the figures themselves.

Wow! Lovely looking (if that's the right word) chaos stuff here. Rebecka you've certainly got some talent with a paint brush. I like that both of you have a cohesive paint style actually. your collection will look great.
Not sure my girlfriend even realises I still do this so good work Daniel!

Both of you are really good painters, I like the subdued colour scheme you are going for and I always think a themed doubles force looks better than just two armies put together. Look forward to seeing more. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Daniel,

Good to see a log of yours crop up at last!

Some real talent with a brush on show here and looking like a great start for a wonderful doubles collection here. I really like your use of some of the Possessed marine parts.

However, Rebecka your painting is fantastic (and it seems like you manage the same sort of pace that I do - slow!) and I especially like the very restrained use of non metallic metals on the Ogryn as normally the finish is so erect and untarnished but I really like your style with them, I will definitely remember that for the future. Looking forward to you doing 'Big Blobby Guy'

Best of luck and keep us posted,

    Hello again

Thank you all for your kind responses.

And yes Rich I do paint really and I mean really slow, by the time Daniel have painted ten of his things I have painted one of mine (if I'm lucky, is probably more 15 to 1 to be honest). And I also have this thing where I hate painting the same thing again and again, I'm more into painting the funny big odd things or nice looking dragons. But apparently I need more than big odd things and dragons in an army.

So to support my big blobby guy and the nice looking ogryns I have to paint some zombies and here is the first set of them

    bye bye for now

    Dear all

Firstly thank you for all the replies.

Hadriel - well i guess Rebecka only stood a chance at getting into my life is she got involved with my hobby. I just dont know if she has come to terms with the fact that we sleep in a house with 10000 soldiers yet?

Icarium - thank you for your kind words. And yes, the notion of working towards a themed army together was a big driver in it. Weve built a limited colour pallet to keep the armies looking nice and together.

Dicky - Thank you for popping past. You have always been an inspiring modeller to me, as you know. I hope that our little blog in turn inspires other gamers like you have for me these past few years.

    anyhow...

    on to updates.

Whilst Rebecka is working on 'big blobby guy' I too have had a big bugger on my painting table, in the form of the Finecast Nurgle Daemon Prince.

Alot of people grumble about finecast moulding but on the whole I thought this model was really well done and bar a few minor repairs i was very satisfied. Tidying the model up was a darn sight easier than metal, and sticking it together didnt require a myriad of pinning.

    Anyhow... here are the piccies...

    Awesome work, both of you!
It's great to see people getting into miniatures as a couple....there's plenty of different aspects to keep you both occupied, but you can also share in the same things, too.

The limited pallette works really well and the Nurgle Daemon Prince is one of my favourite models ever...there's so much detail on it.

Subscribed to this thread...really intrigued to see what you come up with next (no pressure, though).

    Dear all

firstly, AndyG, thank you for your kind words. Rebecka and I have really found something to connect with on the modelling front and really enjoying doing this together.

We've had a fab weekend, spent Saturday in our local GW store in Swindon, spending time with some of the younger kids talking about painting techniques and teaching some of the younger ones about brush care and how we are achieving our colours. Then had a chance to talk about colour wheels with some of the veterans and then obviously got on to how cheesey some armies are. A real chance to indulge my inner geek.

Talking about inner geek, I had a parcel come through for me!

My forgeworld Deathguard conversion kit is in so I can build up a load more plague marines.

Also got some WIPs of the last few I have got built.

They are coming along nicely. just takes a while for the glazes and washes to dry alas... and no one likes watching paint dry.

I know exactly what you mean Rebecka! I do exactly the same thing, paint really slowly and carefully and I love to paint all the interesting things. However, I love converting too it takes me even longer! But little guys have to be tolerated sometimes and your zombies are looking great and I like the mixing of parts, surprisingly you've made them blend together quite well.

Thanks Daniel, that's very kind of you to say! I hope it does too, hell it makes me want to mess around with some Nurgle minis too! My Khorne marines are taking ages but I should have a dedication to that god posted in my log very soon!

Yet again you're painting much quicker than Rebecka but it's good to see a big mini of yours though, they're so much more fun for lavishing attention on. I've always loved the character of that mini and it's a great paintjob you've given it. It seems like a small thing but I really like the way you've painted all the gunmetal areas, looks really age worn and I think it makes the mini.

Looking forward to seeing more you two!

Who cares about all the painting stuff we want to see more pics of Rebecka

j/k Nice Job wish I had me a lady friend I could connect with to do this stuff with me. I did have a hot Vietnamese girlfriend once upon a time that I got addicted to starcraft and she was a great nail painter in her moms nail salon...I think I could have gotten her into this...oh well I guess i'll never know.

So instead I Married a stable gal (as in good family, good job, good head on her shoulders, not a hoe but some times a bimbo, and good home keeper not like feeds horses stable gal) who has no clue nor desire to know any of this stuff....but she gave me a son (a mini me!) who is already excited about this stuff but he's only 4 years old now and way way too obsessed with Weapons, guns and violence so now I cant even show him any of this stuff anymore and we got our violent little rug rat in a behavioral management program......damn you GW you never put a warning label on your products about exposing children to Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000! I think I can sue then cant I? But enough rambling you guys are painting up great stuff and I hope to see more but if you have kids with Rebecka don't show them all this stuff untill they are old enough

    Hello hello

I have started my "big blobby guy" this weekend and finished of the..... hmmmm.... what are they called? Ogryns?

And "Big blobby guy" first got a white dry brush so that i could see all the different things going on on him, because there is ALOT

Put some paint on him and this is how he looks now

I have also had a lesson in the spacemarines history this weekend, where I have watched the Ultramarines movie. I really don't like the spacemarines because they are not real enough in some way.
So Daniel is making an effort in teaching me about their background and things so that I might like them more.

And this is a secret .... it is actually working, I like them more now after knowing a little bit more about them and might even try and read one of the books about them.

( To Redeath, how old is old enough? Because Daniel in a Games Workshop is like having a 4 year old there with me )

    Have a good evening everybody

    Rebecka

Wow they both look great but....I think you just need to fix that spot under them pock marked but cheeks it looks like it should be some big hairy balls. I would also drill a sphincter hole back there would really be Extra Awsome and then you could green stuff a nice brown cow pie sitting on the base behind him. damnit now you made me want to buy one of those and do all that and enter it in at the golden daemon awards at gamesday to see if it would get any awards.

Looks really good. Might I suggest adding some purple washes around the wounded areas? It usually gives a good sickly look.

    Can't wait to see more.

    Dear all...

Well firstly, as always, thank you so much to all the people who have taken the time out to reply to our blog. Its lovely to see all your kind words and advice. Its people like you that keep us both inspired to keep plodding onwards.

Rebecka is hoping to have an update for you all tommorrow, but until then, I'm afraid you'll have to cope with my ramblings.

I've finished my first big set of plague marines today, although I still need to transfer them over to our bases. Really enjoyed working with the finecast marines as well as a few of the forgeworld ones, mixed in with my own conversions. Also having gone through my bits box I came across an original 1991 heresy armoured marine that I've slipped in to this lot.

I've painted up some plasma marines with this current lot and have gone for a blue glow on there weapons. Im unsure as to whether or not I'll go back and gloss varnish the glow effects, but as these havent been matt varnished yet, I still have time to go back and decide.

Heading back to the Heresy marine... here is a picture of him.

    Another WIP post to follow...

Its only when you put photo's up on here and review them, that sometimes you see how they are looking.

quite clearly the current set of photos are a bit dark so I'll have to go back and re take some over the next day or so.

    anyhow...

    WIPS

I've dug out a load of Mark 1 rhinos that I've accumulated over the years, (ive got about 15 in total if you go back to various other armies) but I have 4 which are in various states of love.

I've spent most of today nurglifying them and also trying to repair them. I hope they are going to paint up ok.

    Lots of green stuff work.

    Hope you like...

Well, look who's back. Welcome back gonzos, and hi Rebecka. That's a really cool project you two got going on together. It's always nice when people do army projects together. Looking forward to seeing this one progress! On a side note - I think that your painting improved a lot, Daniel. The Plague Marines look great so far.
