Total War - Fall of the Samurai

    No threads on this yet?

I'm loving it. The setting allows a brilliant clash of different troop types, and interesting development choices. It's also a period I don't know a huge amount about, so unlike Medieval and Empire, I'm not spending the whole time saying "that wouldn't happen!".

I'm enjoying it and it's a real challenge. I'm liking the Ironclads, HMS Warrior ftw!
Royal, US and French marines backed up by gatling guns are devastating. It bodes well for a 19th century "Colonial" Total War.

Crimea, Anglo-Zulu wars, American Civil War... yeah, that could be good.

I enjoy both. Just finished my second ME2 play through and in FOTS I am no longer clan Satsuma, the Emperor has declared me clan Satsuma Imperial Vanguard!

Dross? Mass Effect? different strokes for different folks I guess.

I enjoyed Shogun 2 (though wasn't very good at it) so it makes sense for me to pick this up, to be honest until I saw this thread I didn't even know it had been released yet!

Its all about Steam for this sort of thing, or pretty much anything I get on PC now to be honest.

Yup, I've just become Saga Imperial Vanguard, and it's all kicked off big style.

I thought a Mass Effect slating might get a reaction! To be fair, I haven't played the 3rd game, and only played a demo of the 2nd, but the first was IMO utterly awful.

I like the Total War games in theory, but games based on "realism" tend to annoy me when absurdities start to pile up. For instance, in Empire, while playing as Poland, my constant ignoring of the Barbary Pirates (who I had no contact with whatsoever, and who kept attempting to negotiate with me every second turn) ended up causing one of the Indian nations (can't remember which one off the top of my head) to launch a massive amphibious invasion force up through the Black Sea.

    Say what?

The Barbary Pirates, of course, were friends with the Ottomans, who were friends with the aforementioned Indians, who otherwise had no contact and therefore no real interest in the nation of Poland.

    /rolleyes

I tend to start the campaigns in those games in a gung-ho fashion, but get annoyed with them fairly quickly.

19th century history is one of my interests so I think I'll give this a try, though I've not been as enthralled by Shogun2 as the other entries in the series. I pre-ordered and I've only put in 30 hours so far.

That was a balance problem in Empire. They made the Mogul Empire too weak compared to the Maratha Confederacy with the result that barring European intervention the Maratha would easily conquer India and then breeze onto the European map

And that's why you have sites like http://www.twcenter.net/ where you can download all sorts of home-made mods, fixes and expansions

Yeah, the diplomacy has always been the weak link, but I do think it's improved with FotS, partly because it's a slightly simpler situation. I really can't wait to see the next Medieval TW, the improvements they have made since M2:TW are huge.

I love the game, I just wish my PC could run it better.

That thing is a serious serious hog.

Quick question, I’ve saved a couple of battle replays which I’d like to post up on youtube, but I can’t find where Steam has stored them. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    The internet tells me this:
Replays are located in the hidden AppData folder (Vista/Win 7, no idea about XP but likely) just like save games and other data is. So once you go in to Folder Options and make hidden folder visible you'll want to look for Roaming/The Creative Assembly/Shogun2/replays.
    Does that help?

Just out of interest, if you have Fall of the Samurai installed, are you required to download that 5 gig patch as well?
It kinda messed up my steam installation...

I think so, Steam automatically downloaded it for me the day before FOTS was released

I'm hoping FoTS is a test-bed for the next TW game, I'd love to see a Total War: Victoria, to include ACW, Crimea, Austro-Prussian War, Franco-Prussian War, First and Second Boer War, Spanish-American War, and possibly a DLC to launch us into WWI

Console gamer nowadays...I'd love to play something deep but family commitments and work mean I need my games in short, sharp bursts.
