    New Paint Support and Advice!

I imagine by now many of you have had a play with the new paints, I also so imagine that many (myself included) have not. I would like to try to convert to the new colours but don't really know which ones to get so I was hoping that anyone who has used the new paints could post some of their work with a tutorial and we late adopters can see how it's done. Speaking for myself I am specifically looking for human flesh tones and orc/ork flesh, gold and bone as I always struggled painting these with old colours. Other colours I imagine will have wide appeal and interest are metallics and the more mainstream space marine chapters also painting bright colours over black.
I am also interested to see how the textured paints work on bases (can't imagine they work as well as GW says they do but I'm keeping an open mind) and how new washes compare to the old ones. Any input would be appreciated as well as people registering interest with what they would like to see demonstrated with the new paint system. (sorry if there is already a similar thread to this it just strikes me as a topic many would benefit from)

TL;DR post pics of your efforts with new paints!

Re: New Paint Support and Advice!

Well I did get to try out the new paints on Saturday, and I have to say I was very disappointed.

I am not normally one to have a dig at GW but I feel they have dropped the ball on this one, although it may be that they just take a lot of getting used to, but they certainly aren't like the old paints (or like any of the other competitors).

In their defence the new washes are an improvement and I can see the red one being very popular, and Nuln Oil was also very good.

However the base colours were way too thick, and seemed impossible to mix properly just by shaking the bottle, you would need to give them a good stir, and they seperate much like the old foundation paints if you add too much water, so you really need to use medium instead, which is fair enough but I don't always want to add medium.

The colours themselves are als a bit drab to be honest, although the glazes helped a bit with that.

I'm not saying they're terrible as such, as it may just be that I needed more time with them, but they certainly weren't in any way intuitive.

At least the lids on the pot stayed open I suppose, but that was really the only improvement I could see.

However I will try to give them a more thorough review and post some pics, but to be honest I have now almost exclusively switched to Vallejo, P3 and Coat D'Arms. Sorry GW.

this is disappointing news, one of my concerns when I saw their new "system" was that they would be unusable for any other purpose. I will keep an open mind, maybe we just need to rethink our techniques? although the paints splitting still does see like a backwards step :/

I haven't noticed any problems with mixing or separating the base colours that i've used. They are thinner than foundation paints but cover the same, maybe a little better. I've found that 2 coats is enough to give a solid finish. They are also much more forgiving if you happen to touch the paint before its quite dry.

The shades are very good. They don't seem to pool as much as the old ones and dry a little more matt.

    My experience so far:

I am a Badab Black junkie. I have been through dozens of pots of it. That being said, I actually think that the Nuln oil is slightly smoother, easier to use, and more forgiving.

Ceramite White is amazing. Very pure white color, very good density, goes on nicely.

I dislike the fact that there is no good analog for Enchanted Blue.

The Technical Imperial Primer is too thin for my liking.

The textured paints make great basing very easy.

I think that the red and yellow layer paints that I have used so far have been much better than the old ones.

I am quite positive about the new paints they seem to have very good coverage and better adhesion. I noticed that they seem to have a little "pull" so that they tend to towards the recesses in the same way the washes do, so this might mean we see more people priming with white?

I tested out the Imperial Primer on my Demigriff knights. Terrible. Do not use this stuff. I washed the kit (for once) after assembly, then let it dry and then painted it. The primer would come off in my hands at the edges. I gave it another coat and waited 24 hours before handing. It was still rubbish. It was definately better but it would still come off if you rubbed the figure against your finger gently never mind running a finger nail over it. So I got the army painter mat black spray out of the cupboard...

Thanks for stating all of this! I really only still use the washes and bases from Gdub. I was perplexed by: badab black (the new one), white base, and the primer. One word on the primer though.. I have a set of reaper master series paints that came with a black primer. The first coat is ALWAYS really thin, and the second coat for some reason covers like it means to.. try two coats and let me know whats happenin! I'll definitely be picking up some white. Also, great to hear about the black wash.. it sounds like they have found a good blend for a 'magic wash' using some other medium.. very excited!
A shake of this and a sprinkle of that, then BAM!!!! It's my PLOG! (contains dark elf, dwarf, lizards and more)

Don't convert to the new colours. Convert to Vallejo. Citadel paints have always been sub-par in terms of quality AND price. The cheaper alternative DOES NOT equal a worse product that's simply not correct.
Example: The new citadel texture paints take a lot of effort to apply and if you wash it out with water in your painting water tub the residue will suspend in the water and get on your brush the next time you dip it. You also have to use a lot of it to fully cover even a small base and this will use up your stock very quickly. Vallejo offers textured sand glue which is much better and about half as much per mL.
Example: The new layer paints are really poor. Buying them is like buying pre-watered down cordial. Vallejo model colour has better coverage than foundation paints (although it requires some more shaking) and is cheaper.

Anyone who's serious about painting should know that you need to water down your paint into whatever consistency you're comfortable with and you should never paint straight from the pot unless you pre-mix.

    In your opinion at least,

I use a mix of several companies and like many of the new GW paints, I havent had any issues like an early poster said with the bases and they are covering lovely. As for Vallejo yes i use them also, but I use them for diifferent things. I have found many of the Vallejo metallics to be not something I like using, although Old gold is very nice, I am not a fan of the Vallejo yellows either, and I actually have paints from Vallejo that have dried to the point of having to almost rp the bottle apart in less time than some of my screw cap GW paints, which i thought were in dire pots. I am also adding in a few of the P3 paints now but again i have found their metallics a problem, their golds have all separated terribly so its now more of a glitter in suspension than anything usable.

I think either Teclis Blue or Calgar Blue is the analog.

Edit: I just checked and it's actually Caledor Sky that's the analog to Enchanted Blue.

Does anyone know a good comparison for Ultramarines Blue? They all seem to light or too grey, not really one that's a rich blue with slight purple tinge. I got Alaitoc Blue and that is definately not it.

Supposedly, it's Altdorf Blue, but I personally think Calgar Blue is closer.

I'm loving the Evil Sunz Red, it goes on a fair bit easier than Blood Red, 2 thin coats, straight outta the pot, and it produces pretty much a solid layer.

I thought the textured paints were meant for putting mud spatters and the like on vehicles when I first heard of them. I don't think I'd go to the expense of using them to make bases...PVA some rough sand and rocks on there to get a better looking effect.

As to the other paints: the 'Base' paints are a little smoother and thinner than the original foundation range. I really like them.

The layer paints don't need so much watering down. They apply smoothly and blend well over other layers.

Inks and glazes...still can't get the hang of these. I tried mixing Bloodletter with Carro' Crimson and ended up with a reddy brown model

I was looking at these on the net the other day and was really unsure as to whether I should buy some. I have a feeling I will be steering clear of most of them. I like GW paints tbh but they are too expensive and sound like they are being deliberatly hamstrung so you have to buy glazes mediums etc to paint properly.

I haven't had a chance to use the new paints yet, but I switched over to VGC years ago. The only thing I use GW paints for is the metallics and the washes. I'd really like to know if those are better or worse now with the new formula.
