Thread: Favorite/Best Army (not counting rules)

Re: Favorite/Best Army (not counting rules)

    I`ve got so many Tbh:-

Dark Eldar:- Their mini`s are so beautiful it`s amazing. I do play this army and I`ll admit whilst I lose quite a bit, I know they`ll normally be the best looking models on the field even without a paint job!

Necrons:- Whilst I`m not a great fan of the warriors everything else about them is pretty damn cool. I cant wait to see the rest of their releases.

Tau:- The moment I saw these guys I thought OMG Anime has come to GW!!!! I hope when they re-do them their minis stay as cool if not cooler. The fluff puts me off a bit but hey thats what your own fluff is for isn`t it

Orks:- Even if you didn`t see the rules you`d be able to tell their a very unpredictable army. That combined with the possibility of conversion work available is just mindblowing.

Since we don't care about the rules right now, Dark Eldar, hands down. Beautiful model range, awesome fluff, the overall feel of the army... There's nothing I don't like in the sadistic bastards. The rules are great too, but Daemons are my favourite rules wise.

Daemons are my second favourite, all of the newer models are awesome. I like near to all Chaos fluff, and Daemons have a totally different feel to them than almost any other codex, both rules and fluff wise. If we counted rules, Daemons'd be my #1, the way they play is so different from all others.

Dem Orkses iz a close third, the fluff is great. Unlike some here, the humour is what makes Orks interesting for me.

Orks are my favourite. What's not to like about a hoard of drooling greenskins charging around and mindlessly killing things?

Guard are my second favourite. Hundreds of thousands of troops sacrificing themselves for the tiniest objective, huge squadrons of battle tanks and commissars ruling over them with an iron fist. Pretty awesome.

I like the look of the Dark Eldar as well. Some really nice models but I don't know much about their background.
Who needs a life when there are video games? (And Warhammer)

    Orks: 2000 points

I quite like the Tau because of their technology. I love the battlesuits but actually the hammerhead sells them for me

But then, the Eldar...man their vehicles are glorious. The Phantom titan, the Scorpion...they're a race that doesn't sacrifice function for beauty and I love them for it

Do read their codex - there's not that much fluff on them, and it has the basics and some nice titbits. I think there's more on them in the Path of the Renegade novel and the upcoming Soul Reaver book for the Rogue Trader RPG.

Let's just say there was a heated debate on whether it's worse to fall in the hands of the Dark Eldar, the EmpyBratz (a.k.a. Emperor's Children), or Slaanesh's own daemons. I think it mostly ended in a draw.

Hi again, everyone. This is definitely an interesting thread! I was wondering if one army might tend to be more popular than the others, but it looks like there are as many opinions here as there are posts! The best thing about this particular subject is that it's simply not possible to have a "wrong" opinion, regardless of what it is. And it has definitely been interesting reading.

Paranoia isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you think they are out to get you, it means you think you matter.

Mine is a mixture of a lot of different things. I guess my list is:

    1. Night Lords
    2. Speed Freek Orks
    3. Daemons
    4. Tau

Fluff wise I am a huge fan of the Night Lords. Their tactics in combat I find effective but cruel, especially how a Chaos Marine should be. Speed Freeks are a favorite just because I think it fits the fluff of Orks and I learned everything I knew about Orks from the Armageddon codex. My favorite army hands down is Daemons. Sorry but the Skulltaker riding on a Juggernaut is awesome. Tau are awesome too. I just love Crisis Suits, they rule.

Hated the 13th Company. That entire codex was an abomination of the fluff, much like the new one.

Tau, playing a race that isn't a wall of Murderous Traitors (CSM) Zealous Armoured monsters (SM) Unstoppable hordes of eating machines (Tyranids) ect ect, a race that whilst is slightly overbearing in their advance, but their way of life is sustainable, it isn't self destructive or a bastion of crippling *****-ism, that is actually willing to accept other races for who they are.

For fluff, the tau, for models, the new dark eldar. I really loved the old Necron fluff but that's been ruined now sadly.

Has to be Sisters of Battle, I love the old metal models, I mean Babes in figure hugging power armour and tanks! What is not to love?

Second would have to be Imperial Guard / Orks, both the same really and both for the same reason, tanks/battlewagons (Same thing just rusty or red!) and some more tanks, with tanks!

However if we are talking forces rather than armies, then it has to be the Imperial Navy, Huge monolithic ships especially in the Great Crusade era when there could be hundreds of them.

Ulthwe strike force, loved the idea and had a few games with this army, could go horrible if you didnt get your gate out, think its just the stargate fan in me that loved it, but the image of hardened guardian armies was a plus for me !

Tyranids! The threat of an extra-galactic race is science fiction at its best! The models are not your typical humaniod alien type either - they're totally alien to races even the Imperium class as alien.

Re: Favorite/Best Army (not counting rules)

    In order...

Eldar - the whole 'doomed race' combined with the idea that they are still manipulating everyone else, the beautiful models, the almost... detached thing they've got going on is just awesome. That said, I don't play them, because I lose badly and my modelling/painting skills are an affront to such pretty models.

Marines (all of them, can't be bothered splittng up by Chapter) - I just love the idea of the uber-tooled-up warriors of humanity, ESPECIALLY when those genetically-augmented-warrior-monks are technically at theological odds with the majority of the Imperium they're sworn to protect. That's INTERESTING. I'm currently building a new Raven Guard inspired army...

    Chaos - Daemons. Sold.

Tau - Easily the best of the 'new' races from a fluff PoV (even if they are a bit broken from an in-game perspective) with the Greater Good concept mixed with castes, mechas, Ethereals and the persistent notion (in my head at least) that they've evolved on what used to be (still are?) Eldar Maiden Worlds that were left untended. Does this mean that the Tau have evolved outwith the original Eldar design or is this a pointy eared plot many thousands of years in the making? Interesting... The Kroot don't fit though - hamfisted atempt to add close combat to the list by adding allies who would more likely view the Tau as food. Silly.

Orks - the most fun of the hordes, even if they are relatively unoriginal the implementation into 40k is great. How do you tech up utter savages? have a genetic predisposition for some of them to be savants. Give them a self perpetuating eco system. Have their utter self belief actually cause the things they believe (Red Wunz Go Fasta) to be true. Easily the most visceral fun in 40k.

Tyranids - The ultimate horde army, although posing some of the biggest problems from a fluff-writing PoV as you can only really characterise them from their effect on the worlds they attack. As far as their Lovecraftian-Xenomorph-Terror-From-The-Outer-Void concept goes... it's awesome.

Imperial Guard - I totally understand how many folks like the 'normal' guys in the IG. It's just that if I wanted to model and play forces that look a lot like modern day real world forces... there are other games for that.

Dark Eldar - Always thought their fluff was a bit rubbish, a flawed idea, a holdover from the concept of porting over Fantasy races into 40k. Dark Elves make sense in Fantasy, Dark Eldar DO NOT. Eldar who stray from the path are snacks for She Who Thirsts. End of. Also, the jagged, S&M models are just... tacky.

Necrons - Same, stemming from the apparent dumb desire to port the Undead into 40k, we end up with a dull robot army (which looks in no way like T-800s...) led by creatures who should be so overpowered on the table as to defy the purpose. I just don't see the fun, don't get the appeal... Sure - the C'Tan offer some cool meta-story ideas (especially the Void Dragon) but the Necrons leave me totally cold.

    and lastly...

If the Varingyr fluff mooted to resurrect the Squats elsewhere on this board was ever implemented, they'd be better than halfway up my list.

Re: Favorite/Best Army (not counting rules)

My top two all time favourite armies have to be:

Space Wolves: Many moons ago they were just Vikings in space who had given the big middle finger to Gulliman and his Codex. They would kill a lot of things and the go and have a beer. How cool is that!
Recently thier background and philosophies have been expanded (mainly due to the HH series) and whilst they have kept the above vibe, they have a more become a bit more serious. I feel SW are now more like this now: We aren't the bad guys, but whilst we are here to protect humanity, we certainly aren't the good guys either. Get in our way and no matter who you are, be you Ork, Eldar, Chaos or Marine loyal or otherwise, we will *"?! you up. Then we will go for a beer! Even cooler!! haha

Tyranids: Love the models, love the background. Along with Fantasys Skaven one of a few of GW original creations (Ridley Scotts Aliens parallels beside). Love the Nids! Shame about thier current Codex though!
Oh Pyrovore, you're like the Eeyore of 40K
