Shields + 2-handed weapons? How does it work?

Hey,

So I'm pretty new to fantasy and I've noticed that in Army Builder you can give Chaos Warriors (and, I assume, anyone else) a shield and a two-handed weapon such as a Halberd or Great Weapon.

My question is how does this actually work? Do the shields only apply out of combat (ie. against ranged attacks), or do you choose at the start of combat whether you use HW&S or the two-handed weapon?

You will get the +1 AS bonus outside of closecombat for having a shield (giving Chaos warriors a 3+ save), but in combat you will not get the bonus (so back to 4+ for chaos warriors)

you can no longer choose whether you want to use a HW&S or other weapon anymore. You have to use the weapon purchased, so if you bought a GW then you would have to use the GW.

This should be in the rule section. but to answer your question the model will use the shield against ranged attacks but must use the 2hand weapon in cc. he cannot choose to use hand weapon shield combo
