Thread: Kurgan skin tone

    Kurgan skin tone

Kurgan skin tone has always been told as wind roughened ebony, yet the only linking picture of them has your normal norseman. In warhammer Wrath of heroes It states the in game Kurgan hero had his skin changed from ebony to brass because Tzeentch gave him the MJ treatment. So exactly what do Kurgan look like, Normal brown skin or some Salamander space marine ret-con bs, or Norsemen like?

Hmm...Me neither... Money is on it being one of those things that you think is written down somewhere in a large fluff coordination central control room at GW, but really is something that varies from writer to writer.

...and "retcon" doesn't simply mean "change"! Gah! That is warseer ignorance, stop using it!!! It doesn't make you cool or part of anything other than a group of people who don't know how to use a term!!

Are you sure it wasn't their hair that was ebony-coloured?
I do recall raven-haired Chaos marauders being described, but not dark-skinned ones.

I remember the Kurgan being described in the last book as Raven haired, dark-skinned, and natural horsemen. I always imagined them to be akin to a Plains Indian with access to metal weapons/armor and penchant for chaos worship.

I can't find it, link please. The armybook describes them as raven haired and dark-skinned (as Draquenoire mentioned), I can't find a mention of their looks in Liber Chaotica. Since the real world Kurgan live in the corresponding place on the globe I assume that the WH Kurgans look like real-world Kurgans, i e "vaguely asiatic from the Russian confederation".

    Re: Kurgan skin tone

I always took them as being inspired by the Picts from the Conan mythos (who are distinct from the Picts of RL history). Generic, vaguely dark-skinned barbarians, more distant and less civilised than your normal Scandinavian-esque barbarians and not directly tied to any RL culture.

    Re: Kurgan skin tone

Since you mention Conan I always imagined the Kurgan with Cimmerian like bronze skin tone. After all Kurgan/Cimmerian/Scythian are basicaly just alternative names for an Indoeuropean horse riding warrior culture.
Yes this is Giladis, my old profile died for me so I resurected myself

It is also hard not to have Clancy Brown as "the Kurgan" in Highlander in the back of your head when thinking of the name...

    Re: Kurgan skin tone

The Kurgan and the Hung are heavily inspired by the Huns and Tartars of our own history. Some parts of Liber Chaotica describing the ritual scarring and disfigurement of their children is taken almost word by word from an historical text I read some time ago.

In the RPG book Tome of Corruption 2nd edition. I believe it has been used other places as well, but can't recall right now.

Kurgan wasn't really the name for the culture- but for the names of the burial mounds associated with certain bronze age cultures:

However, there is an existing culture called the Dolgans (another tribe in Warriors of Chaos also has that name).
