......and that's how babies are made! Creatures of chaos edition.

With the recent proliferation of monsters in the warhammer world (I'm totally not complaining), I'm starting to wonder where'd they all come from. Over and over again GW keeps repeating that "it's a creature of chaos", but what does that mean? Are they only summoned into the realm? What aren't "creatures of chaos"? Does anyone else remember the old pictures of the griffon and dragon eggs. Do "creatures of chaos" have moms and dads?

If anybody knows, fill me in.

    creatures of chaos aren't
    ogres
    halflings
    dwarfs
    elfs
    lizardmen
    Dragons
    O&G
    and ironicly dragonogres

several creatures were created by mutating existing ones at the time of the fall of the old ones
that many are able to reproduce is pure chance

Creatures of chaos are still living creatures. Most reproduce traditionally, others have weirder methods -this is due to the existence of magic rather than being creatures of chaos. A creature of chaos is just a species which didn't originally exist but was created when the gate collapsed and older species were mutated, beastmen are the perfect example of creatures of chaos. Most of the magic (from our perspective) creatures are chaos creatures- not all of them are linked to chaos or have magic abilities.

To make it very short: creatures of chaos = mutants.

Relatively stable mutants, as others have posted. Breeds of creatur that were created at the collapse of the chaos gates. The Old World being what it is, you're going to get odd quirks within the breed, just as you get however many humans in every hundred born with an extra ear or six nipples, so too you're going to the odd griffon with two heads.

That said, it looks like there's still room for different subspecies or species, like griffons with tiger arses or griffons with panther arses. Or Naggorathi Cold Ones and Lustrian Cold Ones. Maybe some zoologist can chip in with ideas?

In the case of Chaos Dragons it is mentioned that they all descend from Galrauch, their sire. So at least they (and therefore, other dragons) should still be able to reproduce in a "natural" way, plus the Imperial Dragon was raised from birth, suggesting that there was someone laying this egg. Since Griffons are bred in the Empire the same should go for them, and even in a way that the selective breeding made them larger than their Elven cousins. Wyvern also have eggs, not sure about the Manticore or other beasties. I think we can assume that most creatures still reproduce.

Dragon Ogres are something else, I think. They existed before Chaos and made their pact with the Dark Gods only in order to avoid extinction, so it could be concluded that they no longer can reproduce for whichever reason. Maybe the energies released in the collapse of the Polar Gates caused it, but that's speculation. (and most likely it will never be covered...although a "Zoologica Chaotica - How to get Puppies with 7 legs" would be interesting)

I don't see why Dragon Ogres couldn't breed. I though the extinction was due to fighting with the old ones.

On a slightly related note, it has been implied that witches prepare themselves for festive days of the Dark Gods, go out into the woods, and, well, you know.

No two headed storks involved in bringing the baby beastmen.

Nah, they dealt with the Architect of Fate (as they call him) for immortality. They paid a price for it, via sterility, and have regretted the deal ever since.

It is said that The Bird Head laughed a lot about it.

I'm sort of leaning toward a mutant origin, that then breeds in its sub-species. Like the ettin, maybe there was a chaos related origin then the species proliferates itself.

i.e. beastmen are children of chaos, but each new one is not born by a chaos god....... What ya think?

You know this brings up a question I've always wondered, I know alot of beastmen are mutated from normal empire citizens, but can beastmen still have babies? Are there beastwomen? Like female orcs i've never seen a female beast-person in any of the lore, or am I wrong and there was one at some point?

I don't think there have been made specific models for them but I remember at least one short story where they featured. I think it was in Troll Slayer, the first Gotrek and Felix book.

I thought the beastmen attacked empire settlements and carried the women folk away.... And used them to reproduce.

Looking back at my comment on female beast-people, I am beginning to wonder if I may have opened the door to unfortunate furry stories about Empire militia seduced by beastwomen.

In Black Library's Trollslayer book, it describes Beastwomen as being shy and gentle. So I imagine the Herd reproduce like any other animal.

I think the beastmen HAVE females but I don't think it prohibites them on reproducing with the human women or the livestock
