    WotR Update?

How long do you think it will be before they update WotR with the new units and heroes and such now available to factions in the SBG? Such as beast of gorgoroth, groblog, watcher in the water and things like that?

Or do you think they will never update the game? What are your thoughts on what will happen to WotR in the future?

GW appears to have reversed their initial plans relating to the SBG and WOTR - it was supposed to replace SBG as the core game with SBG moving to White Dwarf support only - so i imagine what would have once applied to SBG now applies to WOTR. We'll likely get WD updates for the new stuff and perhaps a full update once the second Hobbit film releases, they are going to need a ruleset to handle the Battle of Five Armies afterall.

Yeah it;s what i was thinking. Them using WotR to portray the battle for 5 armies better as well. Be cool to get some updated rules and troops. Like thorins company and bilbo as a legendary formation for the free peoples.

    Re: WotR Update?

I hope they will update the rules a little. I think most of it is really solid, and I love the core system. But there are some things like challenges and magic being too powerful, and some point cost being way off.

But I think it will be a while before they update war of the ring.

Yeah, some of the magics are way too powerful, darkness in particular. I'd like to see them fix some of the point costs too. Some units are just not worth taking cause of how much it costs to use them.

From what I've been told by my former manager, WotR is now considered an expansion to the SBG.

    Me, I prefer WotR!

    Re: WotR Update?

WotR is listed under the expansions tab on the GW website. I'd expect a WD update sometime before the next model release though, to give us rules for everything released the other month.

Some of the goblin love is just as necessary in WotR as it was in SBG, though none of the new profiles will affect me direclty.

Well, other armies have as little Epic heroes as moria does. Misty mountains is just a lot more monster heavy than other armies with dragons and balrogs. Would be nice to get WotR profiles for the dweller in the dark and the watcher in the water though.

    Re: WotR Update?

Epic heroes and Legendary units can be used to lead the army, but Moria doesn't have the Legendary units that others have. For instance, Angmar can be led by some of it's monsters, but the Balrog, Dragon, etc. can't lead the Moria army. You're reduced to using one of the two epic models, which limits some of the possibilities.

Moria has 2 potential leaders, Angmar has 2 potential leaders. Those are the only two that are really limited though. All the other armies have a broad selection of Epics and/or Legendaries.

    Re: WotR Update?

An update to WotR would be nice. As an elf player I am getting annoyed of being outnumbered by every army that I face by about two to one, at least, so some points costs should be changed a bit. Their (overcostedness?) has lost me many a battle.

There is a link to some nice house rules that could work until WotR is updated, they can be found off of Xeeles WotR games page.

    Re: WotR Update?

I actually think Elves are priced about right. I miean Ft value 6/7 basic troops. Gunna be pricey. Only units i really feel are way overcosted are Angmar spirits. I think Angmar need a real revamp in WotR, need a king of carn dum model and rules too. But for now, just gotta keep using thrydan.

    Re: WotR Update?

Of course there are WotR point cost issues to address, but they may or may not get addressed in a new edition: consider the recent SBG revise that fixed occasional things and left others out of balance.

No, I think the reason for a new edition lies in sorting out some problems with explanation/execution of the core rules. After an unconscionable delay they released a FAQ/errata doc that cleared up many of the areas of confusion (including the MOVEMENT system for crying out loud!), but there's more work to be done. Any major game system can expect there to be improvements going from a first to a second edition, and WotR is no exception. I like how it plays, mind you, but areas like the interaction and timing of heroic/epic actions, challenges, etc. could use some cleanup. The magical lores could be balanced a bit.

Anyway, I have NO DOUBT they will get to WotR with a big release/revise. They may label the game now a mere "expansion" to SBG, but it's an expansion that requires 4 times as many models, and this company is model-sales driven! I just can't say when. Could be in a couple of months, could be in a couple of years to time it with movies and the Battle of Five Armies.

Has there been any actual news of a WOTR update?

    Re: WotR Update?

Personally i don't like those house rules. Other than the will of iron on 3+ and that is it. But i think 4+ is fine for WoI to be honest.

I think Elves are fine, people just need to know how to play them and cannot rely on tactics that work with most other armies to win.

    Re: WotR Update?

I disagree but probably because I can't find a way to beat my regular opponents hoard army. I like the woi for free personally.
due to the cost of 25pts per woi and it only works half the time.
