    Dwarf warband

Alright, I'm reading the articles on mordheim now, but I was wondering about a few things
My local club is starting a story-driven campaign soon, and I was going to take part with a dwarven warband since I love the little stunties.
First of all, how many models should the warband have?
    What equipment?
Most importanly: Where could I get the best models?
It would be nice if they were plastic so I could convert them myself, but I'm not a huge fan of GW's warrior models so I was wondering if there are any others?

    Re: Dwarf warband

I recently started a dwarf warband using the White Dwarf subscription model and a load of the dwarven pirates from Black Scorpion (resin so easy to convert).

I started with all 4 heroes and 3 henchmen (1 Thunderer, 2 Clansmen). Not optimised equipment but it seemed to work out well. The warband did very well straight off the bat and I focussed on the skills that boosted survivability and that affected exploration. Got lots of money and hardly ever had to replace losses. Resilient, True Grit, that sort of thing.

Engineer got shooting skills. Quick shot, nimble and trick shooter. He sat back and supported the rest of the warband who mostly closed in with pistols and used their toughness to outlast the opponents.

Sadly I got a bit bored with them and disbanded them in favour of Chaos Marauders (needed a Scion of Chaos in my Border Town Burning campaign). A lot more challenging now.

Maybe not very creative, but the dwarves I have are OOP GW models. A runesmith, some hammerers and some slayers (All metal).

    Re: Dwarf warband

I suggest what Catferret says, max heroes and around three henchmen. I always want two ranged weapons, one on my Engineer and one on a Thunderer. Two Thunderers if I can scrounge up the money.

For models, I have a load of old Marauder era Games Workshop miniatures that I tend to use. They're so characterful it's scary.

I can't think of any alternative plastic models, here are a few links to some interesting Dwarf ranges though.
    Lead Adventure
    Hasslefree Miniatures
    Red Box Games

Another option I guess would be to use the Plastic Miner kit as a base, I'm not really sure how much work would be needed to make them look like a group of inviduals rather than having them all in the same pose though.

Can't wait to see them, I've been thinking of doing the same thing, especially since my local craft store has 50% off on blisters and they have an old organ gun there.
I was wondering, are there any modelling/painting articles on mordheim available anywhere?

The artillery crewmen do seem like a great place to start.

I don't know if they are still produced but some of the metal champion models for the various units, rangers, miners and so on could be good too.

    Re: Dwarf warband

On Tom's Boring mordheimforum I found the Troll Slayer warband. It includes one rememberer, who's kinda like a Bard (in fluff more than in rules).

I don't think there would be ANYTHING better to use, than the model on the right. I've only discovered the Lead Adventures site two days ago, but I like these models just as much as the old Marauder Dwarfs from GW.

    Re: Dwarf warband

Nothing but off-topic here, but I justed wanted to say that I've ordered me some Dwarfs from Lead Adventures. The Dragon Keep box, the one shown above with the singer, the Librarians and the one with the Captain and the Female dwarf warrior (finally!) Pictures will be posted on this forum in due time if people are interested.

    Re: Dwarf warband

Well here's what I thought up
(since the rules are free I think I don't need to delete the costs?)

    Dwarf Noble 85
    Helmet 10
    Axe 5

    Dwarf Engineer 50
    Helmet 10
    Crossbow 25

    Dwarf Troll Slayer 50
    Axe 5

    Dwarf Troll Slayer 50
    Axe 5

    2 Dwarf Clansmen 80
    Helmets 20
    Double handed weapons 30

    1 Dwarf Thunderer 40
    Helmet 10
    Crossbow 25

Makes exactly 500 crowns, at least that's what I got
Mind you I've always been crap at making army lists so feedback would be appreciated

Personally I don't bother with ranged units and helmets. Odds are they won't see close combat anyway. Saves you 20 crows with which you can buy your Trollslayers another axe or something. Other than that, looks like a list I would have too. Give it a go, that's the best way to find ou anyway.

Ah, you're right. I'm thinking of upgrading the noble's axe to dwarven axe and giving the slayers 2 normal axes each.
Also I got the longbeard command set from my friend for free, I'll be using the champion as my noble, the rest will probably make fine clansmen for when I expand my warband.
Only need the engineer and berserkers now...

    Re: Dwarf warband

While the characterful side of me doesn't see any issues at all the more "gamey" side of me is wondering if having over 1/4 of your dwarves (okay it's only 2 but still) armed with greatweapons could be a little risky.

Now with T4 dwarves are hard to put down but even they can get knocked on their **** before getting a swing in with those always strikes last weapons.

    Re: Dwarf warband

Might consider keeping those two guys near your Thunderers, as a sort of 'dwarf-wall' against charges. They'll strike last anyway if charged, might as well pack a wallop. Or just buy them halberds and save 5gc a piece. Still have a harder hit.
