    Starting Space Wolves

    Hi everyone, I recently decided to start space wolves. I know nothing about 40k I don't even have the rulebook yet. I've ordered both the codex and the main rulebook. I was wondering what the general consensus is about Space Wolves. What units are good and what units should I stay away from. What tanks/transports should I buy also. Lastly what equipment is good on Space Wolves. Thanks in advance.

    The Space Wolf battleforce is a good start as there is no "bad" units in there. Battleforce will give you 20 Grey Hunters, 5 scouts and a drop pod.
    While Space Wolves are good, they do have lots of "meh" units.

    Best units:
    Rune Priest
    Grey Hunters
    Wolf Guards
    Long Fangs (missile launcher spam is popular but I prefer the more balanced loadout 2 x Lascannons, 2 Missile Launcher, 1 Plasma Cannon)
    Scouts (meltagun with melta bombs)

    These units will give a solid backbone to any army.

    Rhinos or Razorback are useful to transport your Grey Hunters however. DO NOT BUY Rhinos. Buy Razorbacks only. The reason is that a Razorback kit contains all the pieces to make a Razorback or a Rhino while a Rhino does not have the Razorback weapons and you are stuck buying bits seperatly to achive the same thing a Razorback kit allows you to.

    Thunderwolves are very good but expensive point wise. I would stay away from them below 1500 points.

    That's pretty much a list of what competitive players tend to take, not saying it's wrong, just that when it comes to Space Wolves, all the units are pretty good, it's just a matter of personal preference.

    My advice is to read through the codex and see what leaps out at you as a cool concept for an army, then build that

    Also, despite what people tell may you, Blood Claws, Swiftclaws and Skyclaws are NOT bad units, they just work best with a Wolf Priest attached to them.

    However the Razorback/Rhino tip is a good one. Both kits are the same price/

    What about Tanks and such what are good and what are bad. The predators look good, but gamewise are they any good?

    Another question, i looked at the battleforce and it says there are 10 grey hunters and 10 bloodclaws. Also are bikers and land speeders any good?

    Lots of people shy away from bikers, though the extra speed and toughness is kinda nice. Sometimes a small, fast unit of bikes with Melta capability is useful. A minimum squad with an attack bike maybe? I haven't seen 'em used by any of our four local Space Wolf players.

    The Heavy Flamer & Multimelta Speeder is a solid and really cheap threat. Their job is generally to distract the other guy or hit something fragile really hard. It's often said by folks at my store that if these are still alive at the end of the game you were using 'em wrong.

    I've heard people comment on the Heavy Bolter / Auto Cannon Dread as a solid and inexpensive model for long range anti-infantry punch. Though... Space Wolves have a large number of options for Long Range firepower and for killing infantry. It's a good model that may get overshadowed by some of the other options available to you.

    Take all this with a grain of salt. Ideally you're looking for a pile of units that work well together, cover for each other's weaknesses, and appeal to you as a player. The army's a waste of funds and time if you don't enjoy using it.

    Proxy a bunch of different stuff before you buy it. Just pushing around paper slips for a few games with friends or borrowing the models from a loaner army would be a great way to get the hang of how your units are supposed to work before you spend the $$$ on them.

    Id say tha best advice if you are just starting the game is to buy the battleforce and a hq (probaly a runepriest), build the minatures within and play a few 500 point games. In between games paint the minatures up and in next to no time you will have a small but nice looking force.

    By playing the small games you will get used to the rules and once you have painted the battleforce up you can add other units such as transports / vehicles and you will have a clearer view of what units you like playing.

    I woyuld stay away from playing so called net lists, as i feel it is far better to learn for yourself what units are good / bad and which units fit into your play style.

    Lastly dont go out and buy a load of minatures, becasue as nearly everyone on warseer will be able to tell you, the minatures will probably just sit on the shelf unbulit and unpainted!! Most people on here have lots of stuff they have bought and then done nothing with! haha

    Preds can be very good, really the only heavy support choice I wouldn't recommend at first is the whirlwind (cause most people play marines). The main thing with tanks like preds is to have a clear goal in mind for it, if you want to go after tanks load up on las cannons, infantry go autocannon- bolters or if your looking for a cheap hull go with the basic auto-cannon. Magnets are a good way to make a tank more flexible as you change out different options a bit easier (mainly adding and removing sponsons).

    The grey hunters and blood claws use the same sprues (the difference is that blood claws don't have bolters), and most people make their PA wolf guard out of them as well (just make sure your opponents know what they are).

    I never really got bikes to work for me but a lot of that my have been that I was new to marines when I first started (was an eldar player). If you know other players who have bikes see if they'll you use them for a couple games and test them out. Speeders are really good though, but I would hold off on them at first, IMO they're a really cheap (pointswise) solution to whatever you find your list is lacking but you'll need figure out what you need first .

    I agree with some of the other posters that you should start slow, a rune priest and the battleforce is a solid start.
