the big problem with slaves is ld2 (pretty sure) ... but giant rats handlers get hit at 5-6 ? are they not easy target or are they not worth it?
Yeah, they are hit on a 5-6 against shoting attacks, but the times your oponent shots at your giant rats will be scarce... In combat they cannot be targeted unles they are in contact with an enemy
The problem with giant rats is that if you want a cheap unit, you take slaves and if you want a little better unit, you take clanrats which are more durable and can take a weapon team and/or push a bell.
And I love the concept of giant rats, but nowadays they are hard to justify on a list
Dwarfs: 2W-0D-0L
Skaven: 4W-1D-0L
Sisters of Battle: 2W-0D-1L
Necrons: 2W-0D-0L / (5th: 3W-3D-1L)
(Tyranids: 6th: 1W-0D-0L / 5th: 9W-4D-9L) (Army sold)
Annoyingly that is true.. which is why I am waiting until I have a stupidly large unit avail before I try it in combat - 40 giant rats is not going to be as powerful as 30 Clan Rats or 60 slaves. But 80 giant rats with Skeel and 5 packmasters - 380 points. For the cost they'll be pretty scary.... point for point they'll hold to a standstill or destroy anything of comperable value; and will prob distract as many points again in weapons fire.

Karse: you can't have your ratling guns without having clanrats, unless you're bringing stormvermin. In reality you need a mixture. Clanrats boost fortitude and bring weapons teams in. Slaves are brilliant throwaway units. Giant rats are nice but don't count towards core allowance. On this basis I defy people to take just clanrats or just slaves. Neither is better than the other, they all have valid reasons to be in your army
I still think slaves are the most important core unit. But enjoy them now bc I'm sure they will/should be nerfed when an updated skaven book comes out. Three large units of slaves costs less than 300 points and can cause so many problems for an opponent.
I usually only need two units of clan rats for games under 2500. One bunker for my general and another big unit to throw around.
Slaves if you want to make the most out of weapon teams (from your clan rat units) and clan rats if you are worried about your genrals unit exploding. Used together the two units are insanly good.

Yupi wrote that earlier.. i want both! 100% and everytime.. if i should pick 1, it would be clan rats, because of weapon teams... but together they are really good! you dont need clan rats ... actually, as stated, i have started to bring sv instead.. its cheaper for 10 storm vermin with ratling gun than 20 cr with ratling gun... so when i field a huge slave block against something without too much shooting, i use the storm vermin to field a lot of hard hitting weapon teams
