It's got a lot of special rules that help it. Yes it's not as over powered as last time, so it's not in every single army build, but if you look at the points I listed in my previous post, it actually gives you some good utility.
And using it defensively (behind blocks) it should be more like 300 points.
You save having to double up on WP (even basically armed that's 140 points or so).
You can also affect war machines with the altar (flaming cannon/hellblaster).
A magic missile that's lest to cast than fireball for twice as much damage. Three times against certain armies. (yes it's bound, but it will still need dispelling).
If you wanted a big bubble ld, you would need a griffon. Same number of wounds, no ward save, and it would mean having a combat creature sitting back because they're easy to kill.
I think the WA has a lot of plus's past just comparing it to last edition rules.
But I can also see why you wouldn't like it as well. It's not for everyone. Heck I tried without it the next battle!
