    New empire 2400pts VC

Wanted to post about first game with New Empire.

    2400pts battle line vs VC.

Vamps player had usual sort of bits:-

    8 super ghouls
    Block of GG
    Horde of Ghouls
    Bats
    1 banshee
    1 spirit host
4 bats in two units of two
Some zombies - enough for two units about 20-30.

Characters - Killy lord with red fury etc. vamp bsb, 2 nevromancers.

    Corpse cart.

    I had:-

    AL war altar protected
WL shadow (got withering enfeebling mind razor pit)
Bsb FP ench shield 5+ ward
    Wp basic equip
    ME

    Core

    39 halberdiers
    12 handgunners detach
    10 handgunners detach

    30 spearmen

    Special

    38 greatswords
    15 swordsmen detachment

    5 Pistoliers

    Cannon
    Mortar

    Rare

    Hellblaster (engineer)

    Game-

Went well until about turn 4. The soul fire buff is very powerful, and the Waltar was useful with its 6" bubble of prayers.

Overall my game was lost by the match ups of units ( halberds on ghouls instead of greatswords, halberds should have gone on GG).

But from my experience we could be fine. A better general could probably have pulled this off, but I made newbie mistakes - let the cart live for starters (never again).

    Shadow worked well with mortar.

I had two WP and a wizard lord- and I found it hard to manage dice priority.

I would say that any more than two wp's it becomes difficult to cast with venom as the prayers are quite good and you want then on as much as possible.

Detachments worked well. Handgunners with flaming Worked nicely and the stubborn swordsmen held up a unit for 3-4 turns.

Overall it seemed quite - balanced - with a lot of tricks to try out.

    short and sweet bat rep.

What happened with the super ghouls?

Why did you take the AL with the cart (seems weak in the new book)?

What did he use his cart for?

War altar weak? Hatred at 6'', prayers the same? In my first game used Altar+ 2 Wps, i managed to buff everyone because with 1 dice-casting the opponent can´t dispel all the prayers. And if a WP dies, the AL is still there to buff his unit. Played with 2x50 halberdiers btw, Altar behind and 1 WP in each unit.

Super ghouls? I was basically able to get off the soul fire on halberdiers (two detachments of handgunners with flaming). That was then shot at the ghouls, all I need was a wound per shooting phase (once they did 3, at long range lol) then I had cannon and hellblaster hitting them. Got 8 down to one model in three shooting phases.

I have been thinking about WA. I think it's the utility of it. Plus points:-

1.6" hatred bubble and 6" prayer bubble - this essentially means with two main infantry blocks (40 halberdiers and 38 gtswds in this game for me) you don't actually need a WP in each unit.

    2. 18" leadership bubble - massive for bunkering. Covered nearly whole army.

    3. Think of it as a monstrous mount - but with a 4+ ward save.

    4. Banishment at power level 4....it's usually 10. Yes you can boost, but it's now single dice able if you felt confident.

Comparing it too the other lords and possible mounts it's pretty good I feel. Awesome vs VC/TK.

It does come in at 300 odd points, but with right gear it's pretty fun way of organising the army around.

And you think that's worth 350pts?

It's got a lot of special rules that help it. Yes it's not as over powered as last time, so it's not in every single army build, but if you look at the points I listed in my previous post, it actually gives you some good utility.

And using it defensively (behind blocks) it should be more like 300 points.

You save having to double up on WP (even basically armed that's 140 points or so).

You can also affect war machines with the altar (flaming cannon/hellblaster).

A magic missile that's lest to cast than fireball for twice as much damage. Three times against certain armies. (yes it's bound, but it will still need dispelling).

If you wanted a big bubble ld, you would need a griffon. Same number of wounds, no ward save, and it would mean having a combat creature sitting back because they're easy to kill.

I think the WA has a lot of plus's past just comparing it to last edition rules.

But I can also see why you wouldn't like it as well. It's not for everyone. Heck I tried without it the next battle!

And don't forget that hatred given by WA affects characters too which could be IMHO very useful (think about general/GM with runefang and hurricanum boost)
