Gotta trust the staff member... last time (literally) I played in a GW store, I had agreed with my opponent not to use magic items for whatever reason, the guy fielded a special character, and the staff members said it was fine.

Okay, so your staff-member mileage may vary, but the point was to try and find someone willing to give the lists a look over, as it's an alternative to seeing your opponent's list (so you can still keep stuff hidden for tactical reasons).
