Thread: For anyone who thinks Australia is exaggerated...

Re: For anyone who thinks Australia is exaggerated...

Well I have seen some pretty big spiders in the UK, admittedly not that big but still three inches or so across the legs. Big enough to not fit under the pint glass I was trying to put over them. I guess we are luckly they are not likely to bite us though like over there. Can't say I am a fan of spiders but I make a point of not squashing them (Unless by accident.) as they are good at getting rid of other bugs. I've got one in the corner of my bedroom ceiling and have managed to convince myself it is not really a spider but is a beetle just so it can stay there and hoover up any mosquitos and other less desirable things.

In the Carribean islands I've had a couple of run ins with enormous Wolf Spiders.

I'm not scared of spiders, when a 3 inch wide spider with enormous teeth jumps at your face, you tend to run the other direction.

I would accept 'they were hideous abominations' as a good reason for their extermination.

I'd like to point out that Daddy Long Legs are harvestmen and not spiders. They're from the same class (Arachnida, which also includes scorpions, ticks and mites) but are from the order Opiliones whereas spiders are from the order Araneae. Morphologically they have different body segmentation, no venom/silk glands and only two eyes instead of eight.

Well, they still cause Fear in most humans, so they have that in common as well.

That all depends on what you are referring to as a Daddy Long-legs. Personally, my house has plenty of them and they are most definately spiders (LINK.

Ah, Australia... The reason why TVTropes has a Real Life section on their Death World page, and which takes up an entire section of its own on their Everything Trying To Kill You page.

Daddy Long Legs are those pointless creatures that haphazardly fly in all directions seemingly at once crashing into random stuff especially it seems if that stuff is shaped like a human head! But they are not particularly frightening unlike spiders which certainly are.

lol I need to post a pic of the golden orb that I had out the front of my place last week, in the suburbs mind you, from leg tip to leg tip it was easily 6inches or more and the abdomen was about 2.5 inches accidently killed him while spraying a redback and a wasp nest

Yeah this place is great to live in, first thing you get taught is that if you can see it to kill it it probably wasn't that dangerous, its the little ones like redbacks or the hidden red belly black that you should be scared of...well and the great whites...and the crocs...and the bearded guys with axes that pick up hitchhikers...

    btw vegemite is bloody awesome

OMG I wish I hadn't googled that! The Wiki says they can grow up to 12 inches!
