Tona Criid is a virtuous widow, and that Iron Snake was a jerk in Salvations Reach. Naturally, he'll do something arrogant like trying to kill the pheguth, so she'll have to seduce him and cut his head off.

I know Judith didn't actually have sex with the space marine who was going to raze Bethulia, but Dan Abnett also calls Azeris "azer baijanis," so yeah. Also, all his books are crazy and I only cried twice during Salvation's Reach, so there is probably a thing.

I don't know if it follows, she is a preexisting character. Holofurnace's name stands out as a choice. Even if the Iron Snakes aren't egregious space-greeks from space-greece, the name is specific to a non-classical story, and should be broadly familiar from either operatic or biblical exposure. Criid hammed up widowhood a bit in Blood Pact, and the distance from Armor of Contempt to Salvation's Reach+1 is long enough for a background story arc. Elodie is too recent to become a Judith surrogate, and obviously she hasn't killed a space marine before. Holofurnace doesn't have to deliberately antagonize the Ghosts, he might just get them into an unreasonably risky stituation, and someone will have to defeat his influence over the unit, like Criid. The influx, and sentiments even from Kolea, have questioned regimental integrity, and the story of Judith is partly about renewed faith and social cohesion among the Jewish people that only Judith had kept. Criid is ideal because the Ghosts are her only family, and she contrasts with Kolea who has experience of a private family interest. Criid's attachment to Dalin is tied to her attachment to the regiment, while Kolea can see them separately.
