The longer the fight goes on of course the easier it is for the Tau as the enemy loses the charge benefit and have already been sseriously reduced before the combat even takes place.
Fire Warriors actually can survive a while in Assault provided they aren't facing power weapons or their opponent aren't WS geniuses. They are easy to hit, not very tough, and quite slow, but Carapace armor is better then most non-Marines get.

Unfortunately, most of your opponents will be Marines, so decent Assault skills at worst and power weapons are to be expected, and thus where the problem lies.

Since this is a fluff discussion and not a tabletop one, this is incorrect.

I was responding to a tabletop statement, not a fluff statement. Please look at the post before mine. I apologize for not quoting it for clarity. I will correct that.

I totally missed that. My fault for being brain dead on making that connection.

Who is saying that they are, and what is that question doing in this thread?

I think it was more a combination of the fluff provided in Chapter Approved articles which allowed Gue'las in old 3rd/4th Edition armies. As for being in the codex, none yet, other than wishlisting.

The problem is low Initiative and the fact that every enemy unit that is in close combat is a unit you CAN'T FIRE at, thus reduces your ability to use your strenght 5 weapons against them.
AND: Most armies got power weapons. At least ANY power weapon or equivalent, Tau have not. Their kroot are simply expendable and cheap, but not good (not great armour), so It is really lacking for close combat, but well, we got terrible firepower, so use it

AND: Have you ever seen a lone assault terminator with lightning claws destroy a 12 fwarriors unit? I have. No matter if you got a lot of dices, one or two termies are enough to ruin your day!
