Primer drying with a grainy effect.

Alright folks of Warseer, its all in the topic, I primed on a beautiful day and some of my models ended up drying with a bumpy grain like effect on parts of the model. I know this is occasionally cause by humidity but as I said it was a beautiful day.

Any help is welcomed and appreciated.

It has happened to me a few times. I tried to sand it smooth but it didn't work. It only ever happened to me with white primer.

I have found there to be several culprits, humidity being the most common, but one you have already ruled out. Having the can too far away or too close can also do it as can there being too much dust or pollen in the air. The last cause I've encountered is just a bad can of paint. Having been spray painting minis for more than 20 years, I've had maybe two or three bad cans, so it is rare at least.

The only time it happened to me, it's because I was pushing it with a near empty can. Turns out it was more "empty" than "near", and so I got that grainy layer instead. If your can isn't empty (I assume it's not), maybe it's clogged or something, leading to the same result?

That's something that nearly always happens to my models, when I varnish them on a summerday outside. Funnily enough it never occurs on a cold winter day in a well ventilated room in the basement (were we keep the firewood).

could be the way you're applying the primer maybe? I've found i get far better consistent results using a "painting stick" method, in which you attach the miniatures to some sort of stick that you can hold on either end and rotate them through the spray to get an even coat on all surfaces, rather then placing them down, spraying them, waiting for them to dry, turning them upside down etc.

You may have been holding them too far away as well. I hate priming as I live in Seattle and we get about 4 sunny days a year.

It also sounds like a bad can could be the culprit. I've gotten burned a couple times by GW primer which had bad batches.

    Hope the toothbrush works out.
