    new to necrons....

Hey, I've been playing pretty much nothing but Orks since 2nd edition(with a few ill-fated deviations) and now I'm gonna start a Necron army. How about some advise on where to begin, what doesn't work at all, and what is fun. Thanks

Have you looked at the necron tactica thread? It should cover most of what your looking for.

Probably belongs in the tactics section.
    Also there's this thread:

I would start with the Codex. Give that a good old read through. Then I would start with the battalion - it's a good deal if you want warriors. Some people prefer Immortals.

There's not too much in the book that is outright bad. Deathmarks are an elite "finesse" unit and may not be great to start with. Some people find the Monolith, C'Tan, and the Doomsday Ark a bit overpriced and/or underpowered compared to other options. I like the C'tan against some opponents, Monolith was merely "ok", and I haven't had a chance to try the Ark.

Other good starting places: Annliation Barge gives you a cool AV13 Skimmer and a plastic Lord/Overlord model.

Fun/zany ways to build the army: Lightning/tesla armies, Scarab farms, Wraithwings, Night/doom Scythes, Warrior blobs with regnerating Ghost Arks, Royal Courts of Doom... there are a lot of options.

if you want fun, get c'tan and crypteks, mabye characters like orikan or imhotek. watch your opponents face as everything that moves in turn 1 takes dangerus terrain cheks (especially fun in apoc) or imhotek who makes it dark and starts shooting lightning at everything. crypteks can also be good trollers. "want to charge me? take D6 S8 hits" or when combined with c'tan, "if I hit you with this template that unit takes difficult and dangerus next turn".
monoliths an scarabs are fun for the disbeliving reaction you get. I had a monolith that deepstruck and on the same turn, THONK sucked in a 10 wound doon of malantai. next turn THONK sucked in a trygon prime . 10 scarabs can kill any tank, even superheavies, and people who are unacostemd with necrons will not see those 5 small bases as a target priority untill they reach their line and start om noming.
lastly, lychguard with sheilds, as when the opponent shoots a plasma pistol at them, its going straight back at them.

(list of units I find fun,not necisarily competitive though)

EDIT: forgot about command barges and swoop attacking things like command squads, getting rid of the chapter standard or apothacary

Battalion and command barge to start, none of the units are a waste and you fulfill the 2 troop, 1 hq requirements anyway. You cant go wrong with Crypteks and Ctan for Necron hyjynx. I haven't really found anything thats "bad" in the Necron codex, most of the elite choices are overcosted and are meant to be re-directors/shields/support despite being CC specialists, their low initiative prevents Necron Elites from becoming Close combat gods.

What doesn't work: getting into assault, avoid it whenever possible. don't randomly assign ability's to your C'tan, kit them out according to the role you want it to fulfill. Your HQ choices can be kitted out to be CC-oriented, I wouldn't recommend this as they are better at supporting your core troops.

    So what to consider:

    battalion
    command barge
    cryptek

everything else is purely to taste, you cant go wrong with the above.

    Re: new to necrons....

The new Necron army is a lot more customizable than in the days of old. That said, it all depends on your playstyle. The battallion is a solid start, as it gives you warriors, immortals (or deathmarks), your choice of ark, and I believe some scarabs. Beyond that, there are a lot of options.

Necrons are one of two armies that can stock troops with S5 weapons to start, so Immortal units really shine (especially against T3 and 4+)

Combining effects is always fun. Take Orikan the Diviner, a C'Tan with Writhing Worldscape, and a fistful of Crypteks upgraded to Harbingers of Transmogrification, and you can force so many dangerous terrain checks its unbelievable.

As stated above, there is also the Scarab farm, though unless you want to invest heavily in the new Canoptek Spyder models, you might not want to start with it.

I like to field Triarch Praetorians with the Particle Casters (S6 pistols) and Voidblades (Rending and Entropic Strike). They can wreck vehicles and are very good at character hunting as well.

    Just my two cents...

Really, the only units you wouldnt want to get are flayed ones. Everything else has at least some use (though scythe lycheguard and praetorians arent that good, generally...). Wraiths are awesome.
That said, Id go for a battleforce and the command barge first, since its extremely flexible, and pretty good for the price. Crypteks can be kitbashed easily, no need to buy an expensive finecast model.

    Also, shameless plug:

If you want something small and punchy to start with. 1 Overlord, Two Lords and a cryptec, 10 Lychguard, 20 warriors, 10 immortals and a monolith got me a win.

I can't tell you what they had as wargear, as it was a friends list and I know it mostly from playing against Necrons.

Just as a side point, I run a unit of 3 spyder's currently (will be 9 once the pre-order's get delivered!) with Twin-linked Particle Beamers, a Gloom Prism and Fabricator array. This unit regularly makes it's points back because the gun's are great for softening up targets at range, and once the spyders get into your opponents line, they will eat pretty much anything you put them up against being Str 6 Monstrous Creatures. I've run mine with Vargard Obyron a couple of times, teleporting them up into the other half of the table turn 1 has good comedy value

Start with a Lord and either warriors or immortals which ever you prefer. Go from there, with looks and what you enjoy.

Look at Gamesworkshop.com and their "army",
    http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/wn...id=2400076-gws
Memorize it, study it, ingrain it into the very fiber of your being. Now promptly avoid making that "army"
if your taking scarabs, go big or go home.
