Thread: I am torn

    I am torn

    Between Necrons and Dark Eldar. I have 1000 points of both and I'm looking to spend around 150-200 to bring the army I choose up to 1500 points. However I have found I'm in quite a pickle in deciding the one I want to buy. My general feelings are as follows
    Necrons:
    Good mid-range shooting, I can irritate my opponent to no end, I can take hordes of troops, and they have some pretty sweet new models (especially those new wraiths!!)
    How ever I find their lists contain quite a few spammy stuff (Annhilation barge X 3) and I will paint the same. Constant. Unchanging. Silver.
    I like the back ground and fluff and my only real disappointment with the army is the lack of night scythe model.

    Dark Eldar:
    I've had these guys for longer, and have re-painted them twice. Edge highlighting makes me want to kill small animals, however I also want to practice and learn the technique better. I'm not as experience with the army (I'm not good with necrons either, both will take practice) however they are a hard army to play. I love the fluff and have written some of my own, and the models are (even almost a year later) amazing

    Hence my predicament, I don't wanna drop $200 on something I'm gonna feel bad about, so I'm trying to make the best decision. Thank you for all your replays in advance!

    ******I will not use special characters in any of my lists. Why should I when I can customize and make my HQ feel more like my own?******

    Toss a coin.

    Also it sounds like you could do with a couple of new paint schemes - this next 500 points could be from another kabal/tomb world/wych cult/etc
    Apparently, in the dying days of 2011, I started a blog-thingy to encourage me to do more hobby stuff.

    there are mild rumours of another necron wave floating around, but I haven't personally looked into them too much so no idea how accurate they are. Either way, necron range has many missing units, including one you have singled out yourself as a unit you're disappointed is not yet available. In contrast, Dark eldar units are almost entirely available with only some special characters missing.

    I don't know how you go about spending money on wargaming yourself, but i wouldnt imagine it to be to hard to expand both armies to 1500 eventually. So you could instead look at it as "which army should i expand on first". Given you're waiting on necron units you really want to use, I'd say work on Dark Eldar for now

    The Marshel makes a good point. Plus if you want to hone your painting techniques then I'd go with the dark eldar.

    Thank you all for the replys!
    @Misfratz I am currently in the process of a new DE scheme (which I quite like) so I've updated that
    And the coin fell on DE

    @The Marshal
    The new necron wave has been shown with pics and all, and looks amazing (it is in the news and rumor thread). Usually when I buy new models, I buy a large amount, and your completely correct on the whole eventually/first thing. Your reply was quite helpful, thank you!

    @Yarrickson
    Painting skills require to be honed!

    I'll leave the poll up a few more days, but aside from that I am really leaning to DE

    Do both! Really do a unit of the crons, then a unit of the eldar. Repeat until your happy with both armies

    Re: I am torn

    I voted Necrons because I think the models are great. The flier that you said is a unit you want is expected to appear in the near future (so is the DE one too but the necron one is rumoured to have been spotted and ready to go when GW choose to release it).

    I think you should plan what you would buy for each army. Then either go with the one that you like those models of the most or as was suggested do both, alternating until complete.

    Re: I am torn

    The new wraith models actually made me think about going out and buying some Necrons. I already have three armies so my wife would kill me if I did. Do as Demoulius said, it will give you brakes from each painting and play style needed for each army.

    Re: I am torn

    Switching units seems like a good idea, building up both armies, and I may do that. I just have a thing where I buy in bulk, and end up priming 30-60 models at a time.
    After flipping coins, rolling dice, asking my dog (his response was horrible) and posting this poll, I've found that the majority favour DE. However taking another look at the leaked 'cron models, I'm still at an impass. So, on Friday this week, I'm just gonna go with the votes from this poll.
    Thanks guys for helping!

    I'd go with Necrons. They have the nice new second wave kits coming out, and are rumored to get their fliers in about another month.

    Re: I am torn

    Personally if you can't tell I would hold off a bit or instead of dropping 200 drop about 70, and have one project for each while your figuring out what you want. It'll also give you an oppportunity to playtest things abit more, because both armies rely on a lot of synergy to win so testing units, and having a plan is important while your expanding.

    I will point out though that you mentioned things you like about crons playstyle wise where as for DE it was more the look (and mentioning that they're hard to play). So if your planning on going up to 1500 because you want to play in bigger games Crons may be the better choice.

    Re: I am torn

    Thank you all again,
    And I agree with spending less (maybe some annihilation barges or a battle force for DE)
    I also agree about liking the necrons play style, and that I'd what I'm looking to get into (vampire Counts/tomb kings/space marines/ wood elves have given me enough to paint for a while)

    Decision:: Necrons
