    Re: Dropzone Commander - Hawkwargames

I'm a little disappointed in the flat 20 pound shipping to RoW. Guess I'll need to get a hundred pounds worth and skip the shipping.

I will be buying in, though I suspect I'll need to do some convincing on the part of my friends. The models are appropriately priced for the quality (assuming the pics show the truth) - I know some 6mm stuff that's more expensive, though it's from a low volume, niche manufacturer.

Hopefully this won't get deleted as advertising by the mods, but if you want them for cheaper, Maelstrom Games is currently running a 20% off sale for non-European customers, with no shipping for orders over 10 pounds. link

Thanks! That's a huge help - though not to my bank account.

For thoose complaining about dropzone commander's price tag.

Let's compare it to 40k shall we, as that is still the biggest si-fi miniature game and so gives a nice represantation of what people are willing to spend.

I just picked 3 random 1500pt lists of this forum and then went to GW store to calculate what it would cost to build (without extra parts for conversions)
I came at the following amounts: 363.50 pounds, 344.90 pounds and 286 pounds.
Why I picked 1500 points? Games casually played at that level seem to last about as long as dropzone commander is aiming for.

We know that dropzone commander (I am going to use DC from now on) armies are meant to be eventually between the large army deal and the mega army deal in size. So let's take the average costs: (140+220)/2= 180 pounds, offcourse army deals are cheaper: the mega army deal give 270 pounds worth of models for 220 pounds, so buying models seperatly is around 23% more expensive. Let's add that to our 180 pounds shall we? 180 + 23%= 221.4 pounds

So there you have it, the probable cost of a compleet, bought from scratch, army for dropzone commander is going to be 221.4 pounds.

Offcourse you can argue that you can get GW models cheaper at other places then GW themselves. That's true, but let's face it, most people pay what GW charges and so the majority of those players is willing to spend over 300 pounds on 1 army list. If you are going to spend that much cash on DC then you probably have quite some options to put together your army, atleast more then GW offers for that money.

Now offcourse you can go compare DC against other (cheaper then GW) games, however as I said, that's not what I tried to do, I tried to show a comperison between DC and the most popular si-fi wargame of this moment, and let's be honest, in the end all games prices are going to be compared to GW's.

Do they have a starter set out? Two armies rule book templates etc? If not does anyone know if there planning on bringing one out?

As far as has been revealed, no to both questions. They do have starter armies for each faction, but you would need to buy the rulebook and two starter armies to get what you are asking about (which is what I'm considering). The starter armies are a bit pricy, but they still represent a decent deal over the individual price per blister. If they did put together a true starter (with enough minis for two opponents to actually play), you would probably be talking $200+ for the set. I imagine they figure this price point is too high, so they didn't bother.

Despite the complaints about price, my favorite on-line retailer has already posted on his website that the first batch of miniatures he was able to pre-order are already sold out, and he's already working on getting a second batch in.

I'm just waiting for the modular building sets are released, and hoping they are not overly expensive.
Trying to convince Warseer that GW are anything less than perfect is like trying to teach a horde of zombies that lettuce is a perfectly acceptable alternative to brains.

Not sure if I just played GW games to long but I don't see an issue with the price considering the quality that these look to have, however that said I have pre-ordered the rules and the PHR Athena Fighter to see how good they actually are.
I figure one of the larger 3 piece models is a good place to start and will add nicely to the starter army if I do jump in completely.

    Re: Dropzone Commander - Hawkwargames

So has anyone gotten the rule book yet? I am actually quite interested in knowing how it plays. We can all make up our minds with the quailty photographs, but I am really interested in how it plays.

So far... I must admit... I REALLY like some of the models, and then each faction has something that REALLY puts me off. For the humans it's those tanks with the weird guns. The post-humans' walkers look a little mehh, the Scourge I mostly dislike, and then the Skitaarii look pretty cool, but the "windows" on the ships look soooooo weird...

I don't know... I know it's all a matter of taste, but yeah...

Now, if the game played like a dream, I might still be persuaded. The humans look pretty cool, despite the weird tank.

If there's nothing up by the time I get my book I will post a quick overview and some pictures of the Athena.

That would be greatly appreciated. I mostly want to know how the rules compare to games like 40K. I really, really need a game that is easy to learn, hard to master, not the other way around like 40K.

    1) How do the shooting mechanics work, precicely? What type of dice, how many, how are they modified, how are they structured...you know.

    2) How do the movement mechanics work? I am especially interested in how the dropships pick up and land troops.

    3) How do the close assault/melee mechanics work?

    4) Scenarios or 1-1 battles? How do scenarios work?

    5) How are the Shaltari unique with their gates mechanically?

    6) Are any of the factions cheaper in points than the others? If so, who are the "horde" and who are the "elite" armies?

The newsletter was a nice read. I appreciate their efforts on giving gamers some scenery to print out. If I am getting a boxed set, I am definitely going to make use of that service, printing out buildings. They look pretty good from what I can see in the picture. I look forward to some reviews on the rules.

My screen must not have updated, apologies.

Am in transit right now, but took a close look at shooting just for you.

Weapons have an energy value which is countered by enemy armour and two ranges, full (which is infinite for some directed energy weapons, literally) and range vs countermeasures, as well as a few other stats.

So check eligible targets, check they're in range (modified for active CM), defender rolls for Passive CM if available (like shields), then energy vs armour D6 roll to determine damage caused. Any more specific than that and I may as well copy out the shooting section.

Melee is infantry only, and takes place within buildings. Infantry have stats to deal with this

Shaltari portals vs drop ships is like Necron portals Vs transports, transported units aren't actually IN Shaltari drop ships, so aren't at risk if they're destroyed.

Can't be more detailed than that at the moment, but if you have unanswered questions in two hours I'll do my best. Also answering qs on Dakka if you want to check there
