Thread: Dropzone Commander - Hawkwargames

    Re: Dropzone Commander - Hawkwargames

Right. Again, about points discrepancies between armies - are the PHR more expensive than the UCM, and where do the Shaltari fit points-wise?

Can you give a simple numbers example - say, a UCM tank shooting at a Scourge tank at medium range?

Are there rules to simulate Infanty being dangerous to armoured vehicles that get too close to them in cover (as in buildings) or can a tank just park itself close to a building and start the miniguns on the poor infantry?

What seems to be the difference between gunships/helicopter-style flyers and the starfighter/fighter-bomber flyers?

    Again, what sort of scenarios?

Is dropping off and picking up ground units with dropships a quick affair, or does re-boarding take more time than disembarking?

    Re: Dropzone Commander - Hawkwargames

From another thread, the PHR seem to mostly be 50% more expensive than the other races - exceptions are things like the heavy tanks (where it's the Jaguar that is most expensive), Medium Dropship (UCM are 25% cheaper) and infantry (both PHR and Shaltari are more expensive).

    Re: Dropzone Commander - Hawkwargames

Someone posted a bunch of points over on dakka, I wont repost because I think he gave away too much

    Missions:
    Targets of Opportunity
a number of buildings (scales with battle size) contain objectives, uses Kill Points otherwise, looks like your pretty standard starter scenario

    Recon
Any number of structures (suggestions of 5-10 for a skirmish, 7-15 for a Clash and 11+ for a Battle) containing Pieces of Intel (Objectives that may or may not be actual objectives)
This looks fun as all hell, to be honest

    Encroachment
    Deployment zones! (6" in)
6 turn slugfest, at the end you total up killpoints with the value of friendly units in the enemy's half of the table, infantry in structures count 3x!
This one's going to be messy.

    Search
2-4 player objective grab. Even number of Possible Objectives (Pick up possible objective, roll to see if real) spread evenly over each quarter of the board (can be in the open), winner determined by VPs

    Land Grab
2-4 players fight over control of 2-4 Focal Points (give VPs for friendly units in proximity)

Can't be bothered to summarize the rest, but they are:
    Battle Royale
    Strongpoint Raid
    The Hunt
    Demolition
    Decapitation
    Bridgehead
    Gauntlet

No faction-specific ones (wouldn't have expected there to be, maybe for an expansion) but some scenarios alter the Army Rosters by having an Attacker or Defender:

Infantry in Buildings are hell on earth to shift, they get Body Cover (worsening the roll required to injure them by 1, up to 6+) and Soft Cover (-2 to the Accuracy Roll) - so it makes them both harder to hit and harder to harm- and they can move deep into larger buiidings to avoid being fired on.

It's often easier to demolish the building than to use a cannon to snipe at infantry. LoS is easier though (because you draw it to the building)

Sabre MBT shooting Scourge Hunter MGT:

Scourge Hunter has Active Countermeasures, so the Sabre's railgun must use its Countered range of 24" (as opposed to its full range of Infinite

Sabre railgun has an accuracy of 2+, hits. Hunter has no Passive countermeasures, so cant roll to negate the hit

Sabre railgun is Energy 10, Vs the Hunter's armour of 8 means it needs 3+ to damage, if a 5+ is rolled, 2 damage points would be inflicted

Hunter has one DP, so dies horribly.

Me too... But to be honest, some of the ideas here sound a lot like they are on the same level of difficulty as 40K, which kind of bums me out. I really hope the game won't be another one of those games where everything is an exception to the rule and you have to know everything to play.

hey guys, sorry, I've been swamped over at Dakka

There aren't really all that many exceptions to rules - sure, some units have unique rules (Scourge plasma weaponry is great against infantry, for example) but it's not really an exception to any rule.

I do love the new downloadable terrain they've released. I might get my local print shop to print it out on card for me, so I can build some terrain for MechaWar. I think I'll definitely punt on their resin/plastic scenery when it's released. The game itself sounds great but, at the moment, looks a bit too big, expensive and involved for me to jump in on (and before anyone points me back to the comparison with 40k prices, I don't play 40k any more for the exact same reasons). I shall, however, watch with interest.

How many pages are the rules? I mean, the ones you really need to know to get started?

I'm still waiting for some kind of video review or overview of gameplay, before I buy the models. I also need to look around for some Aussie groups in Melbourne that are planning on or are playing it.

I really appreciated the printable buildings though. Kudos for them for providing it at the time of launch.

    Re: Dropzone Commander - Hawkwargames

Decided to take a punt on this and have ordered the rulebook, and both the PHR and UCM starter armies (the small ones). Hopefully this will give me a good intro to the game. I dont really have anyone but my poor brothers to play against so it ends up bing me that buys the armies and paintss them and they jsut get to game with them.

Hopefully they wont be too long on coming - I didnt pre order but just submitted my order yesterday to Firestorm games.

I ordered my rulebook a few weeks ago and it arrived in the post in 4 days. Considering I paid for quick postage I was a little annoyed... but it did arrive in perfect condition.

    Re: Dropzone Commander - Hawkwargames

Screw it, I just ordered the Shaltari and Scourge small starters and the rulebook. It seems like these two armies are the less-played armies, so I'm going for them. Plus, I love the aestatics of the Shaltari, and I like the terror tactics of the Scourge.

Nothing better than spraying a building full of acid that turns to noxious fumes to kill the infantry inside. I never thought I'll find a better way to dislodge infantry than using fire.

I bought the PHR medium army, and am just putting the finishing touches to a 4'x4' city table. I am also covering this game on my blog, so more here.

Fantasyic city, there, Sholto. What sort of paper/card did you use to print out the buildings?

Scenery looks great there Sholto - any thoughts on how you will go about painting the models? They look horrifically detailed (in a good way).
Trying to convince Warseer that GW are anything less than perfect is like trying to teach a horde of zombies that lettuce is a perfectly acceptable alternative to brains.

    Re: Dropzone Commander - Hawkwargames

The buildings are the PDFs from Hawk Wargames and the ground tiles are Mayhem: Streets of Legend PDFs from Worldworksgames. Both are printed into A4 label paper and stuck onto 5mm black foamcore, apart from the roads which are stuck onto 3mm hardboard.

With any luck I will have some photos of the full 4'x4' table up later tonight.

As for painting I have some Tamiya Fine White Primer and an airbrush, so will be sticking close to the PHR colour scheme in the book. Bone with an Ivory highlight done in the airbrush, and then panel lines and metal done with a brush. Hopefully won't take too long per model, as they are just the right size for airbrushing.

Not quite what I meant. The primer is in a spray can. The airbrush is for the paint. I could use Vallejo Primer in the airbrush, but I have run out!

I was thinking on following the colour scheme but adding a second colour such as a dark grey in a kind of camouflage scheme. Nice to see another Glasgow player nearby.

    Re: Dropzone Commander - Hawkwargames

The urban camo scheme in the rulebook is very well done, but perhaps too well - you can no longer see the admittedly gorgeous shapes of the PHR models! I think I will stick with a simple scheme. Otherwise I will probably never finish painting them!

I play every now and then at the G3 club in Glasgow, which meets on a Tuesday. A couple of other guys at the club have bought into DzC and are bringing along Shaltari (some painted!) and Scourge Tuesday 7th. I will be there with my PHR and the terrain to try out the game for the first time. If you can make it along, if would be great to say hi.
