It is news, even if only little, but maybe it'll help you plan your purchases or something:
New Battalion contains 20 Swordfighters/Spearman/Halbardiers, 10 Handgunner/Crossbowmen, 8 Knights and a Great Cannon/Mortar. Price is the same.
Enjoy =)

so they removed the greatswords and put in a cannonso that's a £10 change on the cost of individual components.

I see the same fear in you that would take the heart of me,
but fear not for we don't auto break and can re-roll for it next turn.
a day may come when Robin Cruddace writes a good book, but it is not this day
a day may come when Ewar doesn't powergame, but it is not this day
This day our dice will roll sixes
This day we will be victorious!
Pretty bad deal overall. I am pretty sure that everybody got more than enough Ulla knights. Well and it makes new knights even less likely.

Terrible change, there goes the only way of getting hold of greatswords at a non-insane price.
Plus, Mortars, Handguns and Crossbows got Cruddace'd and are not worth taking, so that (along with the unit of 8 knights with "GW 1992" stamped on their frames) limits the potential of the box.

If you play any of Mantic's games, check out my Battlescribe project for KoW and Warpath.
Interestingly, I like the change and will be buying at least 2. From a cash value standpoint it is still a good deal (especially when one buys from a discounter) and it is probably a better starting point for new players anyways.

With maelstrom-prices, you 'saved' almost £20 by buying the old battalion.
The new battalion is worth ~£10 less, and I'd expect it to get more expensive as well. Perhaps you'll 'save' ~£5 by buying it.
On the other hand, what do you get? Mortars are useless, most Empire-players already have as many Cannons as they need, Xbows/Handgunners are now a bad choice, and you get 8 knights from the early 90's.
Ofcourse, if you want/need everything in the battalion, go ahead - otherwise just buy exactly what you need, you'll save money that way.
Thanks, but I'll pass on this "deal".

Wait... what change? I haven't seen a new batallion anywhere!
I observe that the recent trend is to put the outdated kits in the battallions as a manner to get rid of the stock they have and nobody wants. Common goblins, Empire knights...
This is the war-ravaged world of Warhammer, and there's only WAR!... and hammers.
In what way? What shines about it for you?
I'm looking at a "Not quite enough" unit of melee Core, a "Near overpriced" unit of ranged Core, an "Ancient and no longer in-scale" unit of mounted Core (or I suppose Special (?) depending on how you use them), and a warmachine that can be built as a "rather effective" cannon or a "you want how many points for that?" mortar.
It's not a very efficient army building block (then again, neither was the previous one due to the knights) - you buy maybe two and then you start drowning in knights with subsequent purchases. Even then you're lacking in Core infantry, which is sort of a travesty for the Empire.
Hell...40 melee State Troops and 10 ranged State Troops would have been more sensible than this.
I don't know, battalions always seem to be a bit on the weird side for contents, due in large part to 6th edition and earlier sprues that were made with 4-men-ranks in mind.
Here in Russia we can still buy an old battalion ( and I recon we will be able to do so for quite a long time )
BUT it`s price tag syas, that it costs 82 quid, now is it worth it to buy, if I`m going to go to UK this summer, where the prices are slightly better?
The new Battalion is actually £60 - not the same price as the current one (which is £70)
The Beastmen battalion isn't that bad, but it seems...small.You don't know the Beastmen battalion.
At least it includes Goldigors.
Yeah, the HE battalion isn't to great either - but I'd argue that it's more usefull than the Empire battalion.Just look at the High Elf battalion...
*Ponders if I should buy one of the "old" Empirebattalions from maelstrom before they stop selling them*
