Creating a modular board - Multi system

So its a first for me, I am creating terrain as I feel I finally have space to create something and store it. Plus when I moved into my new flat a while back I realised I had a massive table to game on.

So the plan is that it will be modular, but I am aiming for a cheaper enterprise! I want to prove to folks that you can create a decent sized table that can be changed around to some levels at saying around the price of £20-£30!

So the first part of my board is kind of a tester to see how I go.

Models for size. Each panel is a foot square.

So let me know what you all think. Planning on grabbing a bunch of supplies tomorrow to continue with it all as I have delightful days free when I finish work at 11 in morning!

Good start. How much did it cost to make, and how did you make it and what methods are you going to use that prove this is cheap. Unlock your secrets...
Horus' Throne Room / Imperial Town - re-opened, hurrah!
40K Scale Leviathan - Physical and Virtual!

Dannage is currently seeking conversion bits to turn Cadian guardsmen and Orks into casualties. If anyone in the South East of England has some bits they are willing to convert or cast up, pm me regards samples and costs.

Well its cost me about 10 quid for all the boards to make a 3' x 4' battlefield. Then the hills are being made using just cardboard and I can get that for free from work. Paint is costing about £3 as I find I only really need the small tester emulsion pots then theres just a few paints needed to use from GW paints. Grit used is from Wilkos Bird cage grit as its a great consistency.

For the size it will be and the price its costing. Its a bargain...

On the situation with using cardboard. At first I was worried that it would become squishy and weak for using on hills and cliffs but after the mixture is applied and dried it does seem to amazingly solidify and when you squeeze it there isnt much movement.

For giving the texture I am combining emulsion, pva, bird cage grit and some odd bits of acrylic to give some colour. For measurements of each part of the mixture I would have to say I am unsure what to say as its more by what goes by eye.

Hope that helps! I will have updates later on!

Small update, its a bit of a belated one as this picture was intended for this morning but work was priority...

So this is just a simple plan out of a 2' x 3' section. The plan is now to work on all that and then plan out the next 2' x 3' section.

    Hope you like!

Good to see the plans and £10 is certainly cheaper than a realm of battle board. Only word of caution is that your modular-ness, will be improved if the hills on your boards go right up to the edges and then straight down. Looks less natural on a single board, but when you've got the boards all together, it will look less like god has cut a grid in your hills.

Yeah I have tackled this with the hills, i am connecting them properly now, was just a minor situation

Anyways I have also changed the format of the boards. It is no longer going to be 1' x 1' boards instead its going to be 4 1' x 3' boards as it just didnt look right being all separate 1 footers. What this means as well that I can easily slide the boards when not in use at the side of my wardrobe. Got a full day off tomorrow so I am going to properly crack on and try and get another panel done ready for painting.

An update on the board, quite a bit has been done and I have been a busy bee. So I have gone out and bought my extra boards and i has put me a bit higher on my budget but its nothing too bad really as if it helps then it will be all worth it. So I have the board itself and also some scenery!

So the board is half way there now on being textured and half painted. Also I have stuck the 3 1 foot boards all together now to make a 3 foot board instead.

Heres scenery I have been working on. Just some simple things to give the battlefield some easy cover and obstacles. Both made for essentially nothing.

So worked on a few extra pieces of terrain this weekend. Managed to create some uberly cheap craters and small ledges for random placement on the board.

The best thing about these pieces is that if I wear to grab myself the battlemat then I have some perfectly good scenery to go with it.

Let me know what you think!

craters look good, need to get some fantasy buildings made, using some balsa wood and some plasticard and would look awesome.

The problem with starting with the Fantasy buildings is that the cost will be beasty due to the balsa costs. I may try soon having a go at a building made from plywood. Like use that as the base and then add other materials upon it.

    Little update today.

Building up and onwards with two new terrain pieces coming to the board.

One shall be a standard house and the larger of the two is to become a little pub for fantasy games. Planning on making many more of these to get a flat board game going for things like mordheim.

Let me know what you think, and update hopefully tonight or tomorrow with more work to the pub than just the shell.

    Hello everyone!

Been working on the pub the last few days. Managed to get time to myself for once and work on adding details to the structure. Pretty much complete now. So soon to be painting it and then first piece for the board is ready.

So the board is coming along nicely. Just got it onto the table in the living room and its a perfect fit!

Only small games will be played on it as its only 3 by 4 foot. None the less it will be perfect for 40k in 40 minutes and things like necromunda and mordheim. I am hoping to get a few more buildings made and set up to get a feel for it all. Let me know what you think!
