A Pirate's life for me: My first attempt at Naval games!

Hey all. After looking around and getting initially interested in Dystopian wars, and as a result uncharted seas, I figured I would take the plunge and create my own table/scenery and even game! A group of friends are having a competition amongst ourselves to come up with the best miniatures game with an original ruleset so this project will form my entry.

So, I started with the table itself, having never created a sea board, I needed some help. Fortunately I found a great tutorial on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVrKhu9_Wxo

As you can see, my board isn't quite up to the same standard and I substituted resin for varnish so it differs a little and isn't as textured, but for my first attempt I'm fairly pleased.

Next, it was Island time. I was lucky enough to be at Salute this year (UK convention) and picked up some Amera plastic mouldings islands for uncharted seas. I must say I am very impressed by them, I've completed 2 so far, here's the first (you can still see the white glue which has since dried).

At Salute, I also picked up some GHQ ships (Napoleonic) but I plan to use them as pirates, arrrgh! Here is one I painted up

And finally, I since based the ship and completed a second island, here's a group shot! Enjoy!

Good work so far. This sounds like an interesting project and I look forward to seeing how it develops.

Aye, that's a nice ship you got there laddy. What enemies will them daring pirates face, I wonder?

    Thanks for the interest all!
@ Corvinus - Probably more pirates!

Here is a WIP of 3 more ships, again GHQ but all slightly differing models.

As you can see, I've used plasticard bases (cavalry sized incidentally) I've then used polyfiller to try and create a wash effect, built up at the sides. I am probably going to go down a small fleet route for the game (3/4 ships max). But...GHQ are very expensive, fortunately a mate put me onto Valiant Enterprises, an American company, so shipping could be an issue as I'm UK based, but the prices are a bit more reasonable. I ordered a couple ships that were in a clearance sale on FRP:

I will let you all know when they arrive and show a comparison! If anyone else has any good ideas on where to get decent but reasonable ships for 1/1200 scale please let me know!
