    The 40k Rivalries....

    Every one has a rivalry within the 40k universe, some of the most obvious are;
    Space Wolves - Thousand Sons
    Crimson Fists - Orks
    Imperial Fists - Iron Warriors
    Raven Guard - Tau
    Blah blah, etc......

There are a lot more (feel free to add), but my question is, who are the "rivals" of the Death Guard, I am quite interested by this as I am just starting a Death Guard army and would like to get some fluff and background started for my force.

    Thanks Andy

You forgot about Blood Angels and Black Legion. The Blood Angels hate the Legion for Horus killing Sanguinius. It also mentioned in the old white dwarf articles on the various chapters and legions that the World Eaters and Blood Angels were always trying to best each other in close combat greatness. Don't know if that would be a rivalry or not but it was mentioned. I can't remember who the Death Guard were opposed to either....

I don't seem to recall ever seeing or hearing of any rivalry at all between the Tau and the Raven Guard, can you give sources to this? I am genuinely intrigued and would like to find out more about it.

As to your question, I imagine the archetypical rivals of the Death Guard would be the Thousand Sons, simply due to the fact that their two patron chaos gods, Nurgle and Tzeench, are diametrically opposed (being born from despair and hope respectively) and are infamous for their rivalry and conflicts. I cannot think of a classic loyalist chapter match-up for them though.

    It's Biel-Tan vs Orks

    pg 16, eldar codex

The barbaric orks in particular are hated by the Biel-tan eldar, as they can spread across a newly colonised world as rapidly as a plague. There have been many accounts throughout Imperial history of the Biel-tan Eldar arriving to help a beleaguered Imperial garrison fighting against the Orks, only for the Aspect Warriors to turn on their erstwhile allies once the Orks have been destroyed.

Good question, because I'm having difficulty thinking of a really good answer. Their gods philosophical opposition to Tzeentch has already been mentioned.

To the list of candidates I'd add:

The Imperial Guard who would hate them for their spread of diseases into human populations, but the deathguard are probably above a rivalry with "mere mortals".

However my main candidate would be Kaldor Draigo(and by extension, the grey knights). (I assume Primarchs don't take well to having their hearts carved into)

Aren't you misuing the therm "rivals" a bit now? Both in just listing factions that have fought each other at one point or another (which essentially can be said about any two at some point), and in them actually being just "enemies", rather than "rivals"?

To me, "rivals" imply they would actually more or less be expected to be on the same side in the grand scheme of things, but end up at blows with each other, more or less often. E.g Space Wolves and Dark Angels, Wold Eaters and Emperors Children.

Otherwise we are just listing thematic designated enemies. Or battles.

Hmm, you might be right, but if that's the case then you might have as well qouted the whole thread.

Yeah, there are much fewer rivals in 40K than there are 'oppositely themed armies'.

    Re: The 40k Rivalries....

Yeah, the word has been a bit misused for most of these.

    Rival
Noun: A person or thing competing with another for the same objective or for superiority in the same field of activity.

The only real relevant ones in this thread for "rival" would be ones like Imperial Fists vs Iron Warriors.

I think you don't understand the term "rivalries" and are mistaken it in terms of a rival "both you and bob are applying for the same position and are rivals" when a rivalry is that of history and hate as you both are consistently looking to get the same thing, over and over and over. So as much as people have listed some, I feel several are not "rivalries" as they are not prolonged/consistent/happens every time type things. One epic battle for example between say iron hands and nids does not make a rivalry if they never have or barely if ever have seen truly faced off. The ultimate and biggest rivalry in the 40k world is Steel Legion vs Ork.

So good examples of prolonged, long standing, going for the same objective or mastery:
    Steel Legion vs Ork
    Imperial Fist vs Iron Warriors
Eldar vs Dark Eldar in general

    Bad examples are:
    Space Wolf vs Thousand Sons
    Iyanden vs Nids

Both of those are large single (yes albeit perhaps prolonged to a degree) but not rivalries and more what one would consider bad blood, or hate.

    Re: The 40k Rivalries....

Well, imo, I think that most of chaos armies are up against Grey Knights since chaos is suposed to corrupt the whole universe, no matter what God do they follow, it's ultimate purpose it's to control and corrupt every single world where they land. And GK are on the other side, they follow any single clue of corruption and they try to keep it in the realm of chaos or either destroy it (it's purspose is to find a way to enclose the ruinous powers as they can't be destroyed, when a god or demon is destroyed gets resurrected on another body within the realm of chaos). So I guess it could be a good rival for that chapter although there are no references of direct battles between them.

    Re: The 40k Rivalries....

I could see Death Guards rivals being thousand sons, It was kinda clear their primarch wasn't a fan of Magnus. Though they didn't really fight each other.

    @MooseOnTheLoose
    1) are you a Greg Monroe fan?
    2) Times different in the warp so the Sons and Wolves have a had a more intense rivalry (at least from one sides perspective) then you give them credit for.

As a wolf player though i'm really hoping sons are awesome in their dex. As Black Library fan I really want for there to be a book about Russ and The Lion trying to get back to earth.

    Re: The 40k Rivalries....

Some great feedback here guys, and yes I think I misused the word rival, because the Death Guards rival would be Nurgle itself? But it seems like the Death Guard don't have that "ancient enemy". So how about another question, What are the Death doing now, what is their specific aim? An example would be that Ahriman and his cult are trying to gain access to the Black Libary of the Eldar, mentioned in multiple stories.
But what are the Death Guard up to, just chilling in the warp, or have they got a job to do?
