Talking The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 8 (Apr painting and May WIP

The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 8 (Apr painting and May WIP)

This is the thread where you post what you painted in February.

Please post nothing else for 1 week, and then after the first week of May please feel free to comment on the work of others.

    Mission Statement:

It is the goal of The Tale of Fantasy Painters, and all Tales for that matter, to help fellow gamers paint their armies by providing them a place to find support and encouragement.

    The Tale:

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months.

The way it works is that painting would begin in September and then in the first day or two of October a thread will be put up where you can post what you had done in September (this trend will continue for 12 months). You can include as much information as you wish, but some good things to include along with the picture are: the units, the total points for that month, conversions, highs and lows, plans for next month, and a number between 1 and 6. The number is important because it has to do with feedback.

A week after the initial thread is created you can then (and are encouraged to) add feedback on the work of others. Due to the large number of people who take part in these tales it is suggested that you only comment on those that have the same number as you. Of course if there are ones that really catch your eye, or you are a trooper and want to comment on them all, that is obviously awesome.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

    Men and Boys:

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two categories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q : When can I join in? Does it have to be at the start or can it be any time?
A : Join in any time.

    Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes, but if you can do this time after time then you can probably commit to more. Feel free to sign up multiple times to reflect the amount of work you plan to do (for example sign up for Beastmen X2 and submit 400 points a month, or Beastmen Men + Boy submit 300 points a month).

    Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example if you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : What do I do when I'm done and the tale isn't over?
A : First thing to do is to include an army shot (everyone loves an army shot) and then it's up to you. Either stay on and paint a model now and then to take part, or start planning for the next tale. If you are really cocky then you can sign up for ANOTHER army is see if you can blitz it in time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can I *insert something here that results in more painting*?
    A : A thousand times yes!!!

Q : Can Doi drop out?
    A : No he can't.

Q: Can other people drop out?
    A: It's up to Doi.

    ARMY: Ogres- 2500pts (SUPER MEN!!)

UNIT: 6 Lead Bealchers, 2 bulls, 2 iron guts

BUILD/CONVERSION: These are mostly straight from the box, with one converted IG, using a standard bearer and the business end of a MF cav great weapon....I think it turned out great

STILL TO DO: Basing and picking out flames
HIGHS & LOWS: High - finishing a huge chunk of line infantry!!! While they're not the most interesting, it's nice to get them done. And I'm buying back that joker!
LOW: I used some image editing software to adjust the color, and the pics came out a little "hot" for my taste.

    POINTS: 428
    TOTAL POINTS SO FAR :1820!
    DICE ROLL : 5!

Lead bealchers (BOOM! hur, hur, hur)

    ARMY: The Empire - Middenheim

UNIT: 30 Spearmen, 10 Crossbowmen, 1 Helstorm Battery

BUILD/CONVERSION: Nearly all of the Spearmen got a new head. And I made a small unit filler for the Spearmen as I didn't quite have enough of them and one was missing a spear.

    STILL TO DO: The bases.

HIGHS & LOWS: I had to sacrifice quality for quantitiy, but I am quite pleased that I managed to finish so much.

POINTS: No clue. I don't have the new army book yet, but I should get it any day now, so I'll edit in the points as soon as I know what they are.

Zark's Averland Dogs of War expansion Month 8

    Roll: 4

    Units:
    11 Braganza's Besiegers
    20 Long Drong's Slayers
    12 Lumpin Croop's Fighting Cocks
    6 Vespero's Vendetta
    5 Oglah Khan's Wolfboyz
    The Witchhunters
    Leonardo Da Miragliano
Mydas, Paymaster with Heavy Armour and Morning Star
Kurt, Mercenary Captain with Warhorse, Heavy Armour, Shield and Lance

    Points: 196 + 305 + 144 + 128 + 150 + 230 + 125 + 51 + 70 = 1399pts

    Total: 3362 + 1399 = 4761pts

A somewhat productive month to say the least! Plenty of figures painted, pretty happy with the lot of them. Am especially happy with Leonardo and the Vendetta.

Mostly standard figures. The Besiegers have been converted to use the crossbows from the Empire Crossbowmen as they were second hand and were missing most of theirs. Most of the Vendetta are Brotherhood minis from Freebooter's Fate, they are cracking sculpts!

The Paymaster is Mydas, though I don't have the paychest cart thing. Will try to get hold of one if I can find it for not absurd prices! I also need to dig out spare shields for him and the Wolfboyz.

Time for some pics - was able to borrow a lightbox this time, so they are much better than my usual rubbish pics! Still getting the hang of lighting and colour balance, the yellows in particular are more vibrant in real life.

Braganza's Besiegers - Heavily armoured crossbowmen. Again used the black armour with gold trim, though their arms and legs are standard metal - they're not that rich!

Long Drong's Slayer Pirates - What's not to love about drunken dwarf slayers festooned with pistols! Need to get another 10 at some point so I can horde them up

Lumpin Croop's Fighting Cocks - A bunch of plucky halfling scouts who just don't know when to quit.

Vespero's Vendetta - If you need someone murdered, these are the fellows to hire.

Oglah Khan's Wolfboyz - Treacherous gits to a tee, these guys are as liable to swap sides in the middle of the battle as they are to do anything actually useful!

The Witchhunters - Burn the witch! Need I say more?

Leonardo, Kurt and Mydas - Rounding out the bunch with these guys. Have been looking forward to painting Leonardo for ages! Classic Hellblaster Crewman.

Phew, that's a big post. Doubt I'll get another month that busy during the tale, I have too much stuff to strip/repair/assemble! I do have another 9 Vendetta in the works (more Brotherhood - would have been 10 except Fit'Arach is hiding somewhere...) plus some Galloper guns, Horse Archers and more Pikemen ready to go.
Zark not believe in democracy. We go left!

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 8 (Apr painting and May WIP

Army : Orcs and Goblins (category boyz)

    Unit : 1 stone troll (45 pts), 1 orc shaman (65 pts) = 110 pts (783 pts/1200 pts)

    Dice roll : 2

Highs : the stone troll was a treat to paint. I changed several times the color scheme and techniques used to paint it. I'm proud how the final choices turned out. The final highlight of astronomican grey on the scales was the best part.

Lows : can't show you the shaman yet, since it participates in the shaman conversion competition on the da-warpath forum, and the final votes are not closed. I'll post it as soon as the poll is finished, which should be by next week I guess.

Still to do : as usual, varnishing the models, and glueing some static grass on the bases.

EDIT : here is the promised shaman (he won the competition on da-warpath !!) :

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 8 (Apr painting and May WIP

Army: The High House of Chains, 2400pts of Druchii
    Monthly Target: 240pts
    This Months Total: 290pts
    Jokers Used: 0

Completed: Jaenarys Sinn, Ships Mage - Lvl2 Fire Mage (135pts), 14 Corsairs of the Razor's Lament including musician and champion (155pts)

Background: Potentially staggeringly powerful but lacking in discipline, the young mage Jaenarys Sinn has found her self exiled from the Convents of Morathi and the Cult of the Pyrae in an ill-fated attempt to instill her with self-control. Sold in servitude to the Razor's Lament and its crew of sea-crows, Jaenerys has been drawn into a destructive relationship with the feckless Corsair Captain Cartheras Desant and her ill-discipline and passions have spiraled even further out of control. Affectionately nicknamed the Thrice-cursed by the crew, Jaenarys has become an integral part of the strange family of Corsairs. For their part, the crew of the Razor's Lament, led by the experienced First Mate Korlas know their bloody work well and are consummate sailors and reavers, renowned for their storming and taking of the Dragon-ship once held by their decadent and foolish cousins.

    Conversion work:
Old school Corsair models updated with a few hand and weapon swaps to replace the clunky looking weapons. The old Corsairs are still great models and with a few judicious weapon swaps they still look great in my opinion. The Mage is straight out the packet, and in no way inspired by Dio's awesome paintjob a few months back....

Highs: The Corsairs are looking great, even if I do say so myself. Plus Korlat is one of my favourite Dark Elf models ever.

Lows: The Mage was a shocking cast, misaligned by a good 2mm. Took a while to clean up and sort out and the face detail is very flat. GW may get a lot of stick, but at least they can align a mould properly.

Next months WiP: A few more Corsairs, as long as I can stay enthused about them. If not, it'll be some Cold One Knights.

    Dice Roll: 6.

    And the pics.....

Apologies for the size of the pics, they might be a bit big.

    Cheers everyone - Jack

First I want to thank you all for the kind words and condolances you gave me after I posted that my father had died.
Luckily my family and I are very close, so we can support eachother.

I have started painting again last week, and this is what I have done.

    ARMY: 1000 points High Elves

UNIT: 5 shadow warriors and 1 shadow walker (champion)

BUILD/CONVERSION: I bought 3 warriors online, and one of the green blobs in the picture turned out to be a LOTR Faramir ranger. With new green stuff scalemail and jewels on his wrist guards he now fits with the rest of the unit.

PAINTING: the usual formula: tan coloured capes and brown leather. Spot colours green and light blue. This time I kept the scalemail a little darker. It is also the first time I painted lines on the capes.

STILL TO DO: the scenic bases. I will put them on micro art wood and jungle bases. I will show you a picture of the finished unit next month.

    POINTS: 108

    TOTAL POINTS: 655

    DICEROLL: 4

Owl can spell his name ("Wol") and the word "Tuesday" (so that you know it isn't Wednesday). He can also read, although only if no-one is looking over his shoulder.

    Dawi : 2000 POINTS (MEN)

UNIT: Ten Hammerers with Full command

    BACKGROUND/THEME:

BUILD/CONVERSION: No actual hammerer models here, they're a mix of 6th & 7th ed plastic warriors, some minis from the Skull pass set and a 5th ed special character....I think his name was Drong the hard....or something like that.

PAINTING: For the metal, chainmail, with a badab black wash then a chainmail drybrush, For the skin, Tallern flesh with an ogryn flesh wash and a dwarf flesh drybrush. The gold was gryphonne sepia over chainmail and the same yellow as the rest of my throng.

BASING: Was done the same as the rest of the Dawi.

STILL TO DO: Just the basing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Not really any lows, they're not the greatest representation of hammerers, but I'm broke so they've what I got. And I think they look ok anyway.

    POINTS THIS MONTH: 219

    TOTAL POINTS: 2091

    Ten Hammerers:

    Thunderer Champion:

    Throng So Far:

    Next month: More Hammerers.

I won't be posting anything from my Lizardmen this month, well I might in a few days, it depends if I get them finished of course.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 8 (Apr painting and May WIP

Army: The Stormbreaker Tribe [3000 Points Ogre Kingdoms]

Unit: 4 more Thunderbellies (Leadbelchers with Thunderfist and Bellower); Wintertooth the Ancient, ridden by the twins Lug and Rug (Thundertusk)

Build/Conversion: Mostly out of the box. The Thunderfist got a pistol from the Mournfang box, and 3 Ogres have converted right arms (the two who carry their cannons onehanded and the one-eyed, because I cut the wrong arm for the conversions... Thundertusk is out of the box.

Still to do: Quite finished, I only ran out of basing materials for the LB's, so their bases are bleak for now.

Highs: The bronze came out quite good this time. Having 12 painted Leadbelchers also feels nice. I also like the new texture snow which I used for the Thundertusk. There will follow more layers of Snow, because it doesn't look right yet - but it's a good foundation.

Lows: None. Lovely models = happy Morkash.

    Points: 192 (4 Leadbelchers with Bellower and Thunderfist) + 250 (Thundertusk) = 442
Together with the 2177 from the last months that makes a total of 2619 points!

    Dice roll: 3

    Actual Pictures:

    Leadbelchers:

    Thundertusk:

Next month: I want a fully painted tournament army by May 12th, so next month you'll see 10 Gnoblars, 5 Maneaters (I'll use the Thunderfist as my sixth) as well as my Heavens Slaughtermaster.

See you soon and wish me luck with the remaining units for the tournament...

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 8 (Apr painting and May WIP

ARMY: The Sons of the Mountain, 2000 point Ogre Kingdoms Army

    UNIT: Ironguts

HIGHS: Nice to be back to painting ogres after the last few months of creatures. A change is as good as a rest, as they say. I’m pleased with my Gutlord conversion, and I particularly enjoyed painting the looted shields as it gave me an opportunity to add splashes of other colours into the army.

LOWS: None really, apart from the horns on the banner which I don’t particularly like.

    POINTS: 288

    DICE ROLL: 2

NEXT MONTH: Firebelly and maybe the iron blaster too!

Army: 2000 points dwarves, 2000 points demons, 2000 points tomb kings

Highs - Getting anything done at all, given the illness and the flight out to visit family.

Lows - Not getting more done - though granted a mess of it's been taken up by projects of whimsy.

Points - 120 demons, 165 tomb kings, dwarve are at 1000 here given the cost of the runesmith and the anvil.

Pictures for you fine folks. Will see about getting the dwarves and demons finished up next month.

And thanks to braad, there is also yet another shaman who received some paint:

    Orc Shaman

    100 points

Highs: this model has been standing around for ages! I think 7 years. Together with last months BSB by far the oldest unpainted models I had standing around.

    ARMY: Dwarves - 2000pts (MEN)

UNIT: 1 Engineer and 1 Ranger Champion

BACKGROUND/THEME: A Hold of Dwarves living in the far north of the world, in a region under the terrible influence of Chaos. Led by the ancient and dwindling Purplebeard family, they fight to survive against the unending tide of Chaos. Many Gnomes live and fight alongside them too.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Vanilla figures. Bugman's banner is made from a button and a new plastic Dwarf shield.

    STILL TO DO: Nothing.
HIGHS & LOWS: High - finishing some artillery

    POINTS: 65 + 23 = 88
    TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 1550 + 88 = 1638

DICE ROLL : 6, but I'll try and comment on as many entries as I can!

Bugman and Krudd - for use as a Ranger Champion and an Engineer.

Life has been a bit screwy recently. I've been busy working on my website and that has taken most of my time.

I think that the chances of getting everything done in time are looking a bit poor now. At the very least, the Dwarves should be fine - with 'only' 362pts to go, but I'm not assuming anything at this point.

Additionally, I got those Chaos figures based up:

    Hero on Juggernaut and Cockatrice

And I have started some Chaos Warriors.

The Gnomes too, are coming along nicely and I should have updates for you this month.

Army: at least 1000pts of divers Chaos dwarfs

Total Points for the Month: Hellsmith 95 points

Total Points for the Tale: 405 pts

Nearly ready, have been in holiday and than came down with an inflammation of my eyes, hope my sight will get better again, but all in all I am not really unsatisfied regarding the few hours I could spend on the model.

Plans for Next Month: Working on those MM90 dwarfs, still don´t know how to evaluate their points value and am still searching for the original shields.

    Dice Roll: 1

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 8 (Apr painting and May WIP

Heya guys. With the new Empire out my painting time has mostly gone that way, and this probably won't change until this year's ToFP has run its course. However, I'm still determined to complete my 1000pts of DoC and this is the guy who's gonna make that happen:

Well obviously he isn't painted yet, but assembly (pinning) has taken so much time that I'd like to clock him in for ~20% of his points. I'm gonna stretch this project out over the next 4 months, and at the end of that time I should have, what is probably the smallest boys army ever.
So that's 100 points for this month, for a gentleman's total of: 607
    Dice: 4
