The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 9 (APR completed work & MAY WIP)

Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012!

What is the Tale all about?
The aim of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! AI, BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2011 to August 2012), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 'Jokers'. You can play a 'Joker' at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you play a 'Joker' then feel free to post a suitable image instead (of a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is for completed entries for last month (up until the 10th) and work in progress (WIP) for this month (from the 11th). Please only post completed work for last month until the 10th.

From the 11th, feel free to post any WIP pictures of what you're going to be painting this month, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like in the thread, but please keep it WIP from the 11th of the month. Do not post any completed work for this month until after the next thread opens at the start of next month.

If you have not posted by the 11th of the month, then you will have to play one of your 'Jokers'. If you have failed to post by the 11th of the month and have already played both of your 'Jokers', then unfortunately you will be out of the Tale.

    Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : Unfortunately yes, you are now too late to join in this Tale. Don't worry though, the Tale will be running again late this year (sign-up in August for a September start).

Q : Do I have to stick to just one army?
A : No, you can paint more than one army if you want to! Quite a few people like to paint more than one army at a time, so if you fall into this category then just list each army you wish to paint when you sign up. Your armies don't have to be the same size, but please aim to paint at least 500 points for each army, otherwise you're probably better off starting your own plog if you just want to paint lots of random things. For the purposes of posting, as long as you aim for 10% of your combined total each month then it doesn't matter what order you paint things in. You could paint 10% of each army each month, or alternate armies each month, or 5 months of one army followed by 5 months of another army, or whatever combination best suits you. Regarding Jokers, you would only need to post a Joker if you didn't paint anything for any of your armies that month. If you painted one army but not the other, you would simply need to post Army 1 (x points) and Army 2 (0 points).

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post 10% (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 10% per month. For example, if you're painting 2000 points that means 200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc. This way you won't depress those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, but we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you're painting 2000 points and you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character/tank/unit?
A : This happens a lot. If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over two months (the sort of time your general/tank/expensive unit deserves!). For example, one year my monthly target was 200 points and I painted a Stompa (600 points). I split painting the model into (roughly) 3 months of 200 points, posting new WIP shots each month.

Q : Do I have to play my 2 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to play them at all. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale!

Q : Can I 'buy back' my 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : Yes, you can 'buy back' your 'Jokers' during the Tale. If you have already played a 'Joker' and manage to get a month ahead (either by painting double one month or painting a bit more than your target for a few months), then just state in your entry for that month that you wish to 'buy back' your 'Joker' and I'll take it off for you.

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the [D&D dice roller] if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

    ##############################

I'll start off by posting my completed entry for last month. Feel free to copy my post to use as a template (edited to suit your army), but as long as you post your Monthly total, Total to date, Unit(s) painted and a picture then that's fine.

If anyone has any other questions, please direct them to misterboff (me).
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 9 (APR completed work & MAY WIP)

    Perplexiti’s Space Wolves: 2012

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 129

    TOTAL TO DATE: 2058

    JOKERS USED: 0

    BACKGROUND/THEME: Ragnar Blackmane’s Great Company.

UNIT(S): 3 more Wolf Guard in Tactical Dreadnought Armour

BUILD/CONVERSIONS: No real conversions here, a standard plastic termie with the DA asscan, although of course I trimmed all their bits off! The other guys are the old metal Termies, some of them I've had since I started playing in 2nd ed, and bought the old box with the Ultras on front. Although of course I've swapped their old arms for Space wolf metals I've picked up over the years.

PAINTING/BASING: Basecoated black, then a Fenris grey coat, with very heavy drybrushes of shadow grey then spacewolf grey. The metal bits were chainmail with a badab black wash. The gold is gryphonne sepia over chainmail.

STILL TO DO: Nothing but the basing and pack markings, I've decided to sit down at the end of the tale and base all of them at once.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No real highs or lows, I'm getting a bit more into the painting again, as I've got a game coming up, first one for a while, so that's something.

NEXT MONTH: Some more Termie Wolf Guard.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 9 (APR completed work & MAY WIP)

    Undying 14th Cromorian Legion (IG): April 2012 (D6 roll = 3)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 155 POINTS (MONTHLY TARGET: 175 POINTS)
TOTAL TO DATE: 1270 POINTS (TARGET TO DATE: 1400 POINTS)
    JOKERS PLAYED: 1

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
As elements of the Imperial Guard, Cromorian Legions are expected to fight under a variety of conditions in different situations. The effectiveness of the Cromorian System's defences and the Legions' own reputation, however, result in them undertaking far more offensive actions than defensive or garrison duty. The broad stategic outline used by the Cromorian Legions when prosecuting an offensive war is simple and effective for both invasions into new territory and reclamation of Imperium territory (and subsequent punitive action). The three phases of the offensive attack plan are briefly outlined below:

    Recon
Detailed reconaissance is vital to the successful planning of any further actions. Cromorian Legion Generals will always attempt to carry out their recon from as far removed a location as possible, preferrably from orbit. In situation where remote recon is impossible, or merely insufficient, highly skilled individuals are despatched on infiltration missions to acquire the necessary information. These missions require the utmost in stealth and secrecy in order to maintain the element of surprise as much as possible -the 14th Legion's Lt James "Patience" Firehawk is legendary for his ability to carry out such recon missions.

    Distraction
Once a number of small yet high value targets are identified the Legion will launch their initial assault. These targets include power and supply lines, weapon storage, transport infrastructure and most importantly communications and sensory equipment. These attacks are carried out using the element of surprise and lightning fast assaults and are the province of the Legions veterans and stormtroopers often supported by Valkyrie transports for increased mobility - Master Sergeant First Class Kale Delton has made a name for himself as a specialist in these types of missions. The goal of the attacks is distraction, forcing the enemy to focus on a multitude of small problems and therefore overlook the much larger one in the immediate future.

    Annihilation
During the chaos caused by the distraction attacks and utilising the fog of war created by downing the enemy's communications and sensory capability the main forces of a Legion will deploy to the field. Massed entrenched infantry serve as funneling elements and divisions of Leman Russ tanks as herding elements all with the goal of flushing enemy forces into preselected killing fields where Ordinance Fire (mostly from Basilisk and Manticore tanks) deliver the Emperor's Wrath. Should the enemy elect to cower within their fortifications rather than commit to the field; further Ordinance, also deployed during the distraction phase, will be poised and ready to deal with that.

    UNIT(S):
Emperor's Subtlety: Basilisk with Camo net - 155 pts

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
This model was given to me with most of the available add-ons crowding the surface of the model. I removed them, dismantled the vehicle and stripped it. Reassembly requires some green stuff, a new heavy bolter and magnets to hold the Earthshaker barrel in its upright position. The camo net is simply medical gauze stuck in place with super glue gel.

    PAINTING/BASING:
The actual plastic surfaces of the model are painted the same as my other vehicles. The camo net is painted with watered down (a little, not too much) codex grey, then washed with heavily watered 50/50 graveyard earth/chaos black and finally drybrushed with codex and fortress greys.

    STILL TO DO:
    Finished

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
    Highs: Tank rescue complete.
Lows: The name plate on the back didn't come out quite as well as I'd have liked.

    NEXT MONTH:
    Grenader vets and Patience (Marbo)

Xazil's Imperial Paladins (Seige Vanguard List Space Marines)

    Monthly Total: 145 (150 Target)
Total to Date: 1215 (1200 Target)
    Jokers: 0

    Unit: Dreadnought

Notes: Last dreadnought of this army a ranged one. Equiped with twin-linked lascannon and twin-linked autocannon. The autocannon arm is an aegis defense line set bulked up with greenstuff, plastic card and some bling. I went for a little more battered look on this dreadnought.

@perplexiti: More good looking Terminators. I wouldn't have known some were metal if you hadn't said, the larger bases mean they fit in nicely with the plastics.

@matt_17: Brilliant restoration work on the Bassie! I love the camo netting, and the colour scheme reminds me of an old 2nd edition army from White Dwarf (probably around 210-230ish).

@Xazil: I think it's great that after three Dreadnoughts you've managed to make a fourth that looks so different from the others. I've seen the Aegis arm done before (it's a great idea), and it fits in really well with the Lascannon arm.

@djc: Fantastic Shadowsword. I love the shields increasing in size, the horns framing the searchlights and the 'victim' hanging from the main gun. The Flamers are awesome too, with a very Tzeentchian colour scheme.

@Monsterzonk: Great job on your Terminators. They'll go nicely with your Lysanader and I love the green spot colour on the shields and kneepads.

Well done to everyone who has posted so far, lets see if a few more people can get posted in the next few days too.

I'm plodding along with my 'Ardboyz and they're nearly done now. Also, I'm hopefully going to a Tournament in July, so that an extra bit of motivation for me.
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

misterboff - Nice looking Art Boyz, the big shoulders bulks them out nicely to show the extra armour.

perplexiti - Very nice terminators, they come together well as a unit and there is some nice detailing there. Impressive army shot.

matt_17 - Great work, the idea of using gauze for camoflage nettings is inspired. Well assembled and painted model.

djc - Very nice superheavy, the extra beastman bling looks great and gives it good character. Good weathering and detailing just adds even more. I love the purple/blue transition on your flamers.

Monsterzonk - More good looking terminators, great colour scheme and detailing. I like the bases and how the legs are weathered to match.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 9 (APR completed work & MAY WIP)

Right, it's the middle of the month. Comment time!

misterboff - Those are some really nice Orks! The extra spots of colour on the rokkit launcher are a cool touch. Also like the blue faces. The army shot is most impressive!

perplexiti - Cool Terminators! The muted yellow of the shoulder pads really fits the Space Wolves' character, IMO.

matt_17 - I really like the camo scheme and the netting on that Bassie. And that name is just spot on!

Xazil - That Dread packs loads of dakka! Very nice!

djc - I really like the subtle chaosification of that Shadowsword. Much more sinister than strange tentacles and such things... The Flamers are also very well done! Nice blending from purple to blue!

razormasticator - That's quite a bunch of Boyz, so don't beat yourself up for not finishing them completely. Looking forward to seeing them done!

    Cheers,
    Monsterzonk

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 9 (APR completed work & MAY WIP)

Thanks MOnsterzonk, Batch painting is trying. But there is no other way to get through the massive amount of boyz I have. Ironically I find it easier to paint the vehicles.

    Comment time.

@ Mistaboff... love those Deff Skullz Man. The boyz are looking good. Great Army shot.
@ Perplexiti Nice wolves man. I still dig that yellow shoulder pad. Good looking group shot as well!
@ Matt_17.. good looking bassie. The Camo is effective, the netting looks great and I love the title on the vehicle!
@ DJC Dude, love that Beastmen Shadowsword. They are well armed now! The Shields are a really nice touch. and the demons are very well painted and colorful for sure.
@ Xazil, yes the dread is ready to chew some fools up! Nice!!!!
@Monsterzonk... Love your termies, not only are they well painted but the highlight colors of the green and white give them a very knightly feel. Mission Accomplished!
